Secure, easy to use CAD software with first-class collaborative processes

  • January 17, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
1. Onshape is accessible from any device with an internet connection. Serious work can be accomplished with a tablet device. A work station is not required. Meaningful work can be accomplished anywhere an internet connection is available.
2. Collaborative environment in which everyone sees the same document and operates within the same software environment.
3. The model release system and means to provide viewing access to the model.
What do you dislike about the product?
So far nothing to dislike. I don't know what to add here. Perhaps something will come up in the future.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are engaged in a rapid development cycle with a number of vendors and collaborators. Onshape offers a seamless process to accomplish this. All members see the same document with privileges that are easily administered. Access is also easily terminated which greatly assists in preserving Intellectual Property integrity.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Moving to Onshape is pretty easy. A good start is to upload your current assembly drawing. Onshape will interpret just about any common CAD model.

What do you like best about the product?
Web based software u are always using latest version with newest functions. Integrating it to web sites and document linking, you can show in mobile the part to customer or send link for review. Also you can use great add-ons and paying only use.
What do you dislike about the product?
Pricing about professional to small business owner like myself and co-founder. We paying two licenses annually. Usage is mostly with only one account. And sometimes importing DXFs is hard, because space is not enough, but problem is not with Onshape, problem is with original DXF-file.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can do better modelling and fast with Onshape, even our parts are mostly simple. Also it gives us more possibilities for the future. Because we are more in innovative business.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Test it first and and the Onshape will speak by itself, easy to use and getting better and better after every release. You like it or not. Only problem comes in situation if you need 3D CAD offline.

Underrated Business Advantage

  • January 09, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Cloud Based
Advanced 3D modeling web application
Unlimited Storage
Access Anywhere, anytime
Mobile Friendly
Superb internal and external collaboration tool
App integration
Supports Open Source community
Great customer service
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm not a fan of the 3D party vendor to manage .DWG drawings, which is not very reliable. I prefer Onshape to support .DWG files and make it editable within Onshape capabilities rather using an app.

There is a slight delay in response when handling big assembly files or drawings, which can be irritating.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape is very easy to use, so we are improving our design capabilities. It is much easier to collaborate and communicate with other designers, engineers and clients and follow progress. Overall, OTD has improved.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great CAD tool for startups and businesses who are ready to adapt to cloud based technology.

Onshape - Cost efficient, powerful CAD

  • January 09, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
With a cloud interface, I can now do CAD work from any internet connected laptop, not just the high powered work stations. Reviewing teammates designs is quick and easy. Branching allows multiple concepts to be investigated in one document.
What do you dislike about the product?
No offline version (for obvious reasons) and no "private" folder for personal projects. Drawings could still use some development. Not enough people use it yet, making hiring more difficult.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The ability to share quickly allows for efficient collaboration with other companies.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There is a learning curve, but it can be mastered in time. Be deliberate about your organization in OnShape or things become messy quick

The Future of CAD

  • December 27, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
What I like best is that Onshape essentially took CAD (Computer Aided Design) and turned it into an online platform. I can work on designs from any computer and from anywhere. I no longer need a specific high power computer for a certain CAD program.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike like that Onshape does not quite have as many features as traditional CAD like Solidworks. For example, Onshape has pretty limited simulations and stress testing features for designed parts.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am solving the problem of sharing designs with customers and manufacturers. They can quickly view a part and download if needed. No more giant files sent through email.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Highly recommend switching from traditional CAD. No more crashes and having to use certain computers.

Totally new CAD, an unconventional approach which is almost always right.

What do you like best about the product?
After 20 years designing in 3D solids, I can relax. Everything just works; often quite differently but when I get used to the differences they are always better than hold ways. I've had 3 crashes in 3 years I think, and lost 3 keystrokes of work. When I'm on a roll with a complex project I can power ahead without ending up with an unusable file. I can work on my MacBook Pro while on holidays in the French countryside with antediluvian net speeds! Mostly. The cleverness of of Onshape make me chuckle. The dog can now curl up in my office - he used to think my swearing was aimed at him.
What do you dislike about the product?
I can't keep up with the updates. Every 3 weeks I look at the excellent video rundown of the new stuff, but I know I can't remember it all. I find the help search often doesn't find words that should describe a feature you want, but they may be fixed now - I haven't tried for a few months.
No free FEA, and the add-ons cost more than Onshape. This is bad because I have to fire up Solidworks, then the dog walks out.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm an engineer designing completely new products that are always patentable. Onshape frees me from CAD donkey work, like PDM, backing up, drawings, installing new versions of CAD. The list goes on.
I can respond to factories in China with good screenshots that work better than badly translated words.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Research FEA options if you need it. Use it in your spare time (for free still, I think). Don't let the lack of buttons fool you; there's power in the simplicity, and it is exquisitely clever. Obviously driven by a combination of youthful enthusiasm and decades of experience.

Forward-thinking, intelligently-designed, and innovative; but with frustrating limitations

  • November 26, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Onshape is very intelligently designed, by people who clearly have an understanding of how most people use CAD systems. The smartness of the features, the forward-thinking-ness of the system and its design philosophy, is a breath of fresh air in an environment frequently buried in very old mindsets. Designing and creating 3d models in Part Studios and Assemblies is a very satisfying, enjoyable, and powerful experience.

The Part Studios and their behavior especially are top-notch. The intelligent way the system understands sketches and how they can be used, the assumptions made by the default parameters of the different features, all clearly show an excellent understanding of the modern CAD user. The cloud-based design, using documents as project-level containers, with strong version control features and powerful features for connecting documents and relating living parts and projects to one another is astoundingly effective and easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
Considering how cleverly-made and forward-thinking the design of the 3d modeling parts of the system are, it's very disappointing to find that the 2d drawing creation suite is far behind the rest of the system. Laggy, lacking in important features present in competitor systems, and generally having a feeling of clunkiness and unfinishedness, trying to create 2d drawings from 3d models in Onshape is a pain.

For simple individual parts, it works fine. Some quality of life features are no present, like there being no easy way to align or clean up multiple dimensions, and having no way to import tables from an external file, which means that it can be hard to replicate your workflow if you are moving from AutoCAD 2D+Inventor or Creo Parametric to Onshape.

But trying to create professional-looking, fully featured, and clear General Assembly drawings of complex assemblies is extremely difficult. You have to do a lot of pre-planning and careful structuring in the 3d stage, possibly more than you would have to do in competitor systems, which is very disappointing as not having to do so much planning and pregaming was a specific selling point of Onshape as pitched to me before purchasing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape's cloud-based design meshes very well with my company's other cloud-based software solutions. Being able to be certain that the document I'm working with is up-to-date, being able to be certain that when I share a document with a customer or within my company I am always sharing the most up-to-date and accurate version, is a huge help. Previously, with AutoCAD and Creo Parametric, it was extremely common for my salesmen to come back to me months after a project and ask me questions about it, and I learn that they've been using and sharing an outdated version of a drawing for the entire time. Our company is expecting to grow soon and increase our number of CAD users working on the same projects, and I fully expect Onshape's powerful collaboration tools to make this a much easier process than it would be otherwise.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If your business is primarily about design in 3d and 3d presentations, I can 100% wholeheartedly recommend Onshape. Designing and modelling with Onshape's 3d features has been a very fun and satisfying experience, it's been my favorite 3d environment to work in.

The only situation for which I wouldn't recommend Onshape is a situation where you need 2d drawings of complex and/or irregular parts and assemblies. Simple or single parts are fine, if somewhat clunky, but Onshape might not be capable of meeting your needs if you need to have 2d drawings of a complex structure.

help the designer out

What do you like best about the product?
That it is cloud base and that I can use it on my mac!
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't not like that I can't use outline from illustrator (the program I use the most) and use it in Onshape. This is extremely frustrating! I have to make my outline in Illustrator and then make it again in Onshape. I also don't like that I can't use the outline from Onshape in Illustrator without having to redraw it. Yes, I can export it to a pdf, but if it's not a circle all the lines and arcs do not connect. If you can figure out how this could work, your program would be the leader in this market because it would be the first to do so.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
being able to use my mac, I can get rid of the clunky old PC on my desk that is only used for old CAD systems!
