    Mechanical or Industrial Engineering

Excellent Tool

  • October 31, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Onshape have done a great job bringing CAD to the cloud. The platform is well designed, and has a quick learning curve for users. This is an ideal tool for small/medium sized businesses, as it has all of the tools an average CAD user would need on a daily basis.
What do you dislike about the product?
Unfortunately Onshape does lack some of the more advanced CAD features. For example, I am not able to create sheet metal parts and assemblies. Additionally, the system does struggle with loading large assemblies over 200 parts or so.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape is great to use in small teams which are not able to afford the costs of industrial CAD solutions. They are able to provide users with the fundamental tools needed to get products off the ground, without having to invest significantly up front.

Extremely user-friendly CAD experience

What do you like best about the product?
Onshape sets a new standard in computer aided design. It is web-based making it extremely convenient to work collaboratively. No installations or updates needed. Onshape has introduced a lot of new and clever features, among which "Mates" is my favourite. Mating two instances has never been simpler and more intuitive.
What do you dislike about the product?
Switching to a new CAD software can always be time-consuming. But in the case of Onshape it really is worth the effort!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape helps me in version control, collaborative work, and straight-forward development.

I'm hooked

What do you like best about the product?
In the beginning I was comparing pricing of this to Solid Works. I have primarily used Solid Works in the past. The pricing of Onshape was a fraction of the cost so I thought I would try it for a while, and go to Solid Works down the road when I was ready. Fast forward over a year later and I'm not going anywhere. This software has been awesome. My customers love the ability to see the model from anywhere on any computer and even their smart phone. The ability to share models with my customers and have them follow me in real time has been extremely valuable. If I need help on some sort of advanced detail Onshape support responds quickly and I can see exactly what they are doing to better understand how it is done as well as chat with them through the model chat window. Updates and bug fixes are constantly being released throughout the year, and you don't have to do anything to install them when they are released. They are just there.
What do you dislike about the product?
Onshape has come a long way in a short amount of time, but there are some aspects that don't quite match up to the competition. However, I am sure Onshape is perpetually working to match or exceed what the competitors are doing. While there is a lot of merit with having a cloud based file system, it would be nice to be able to back up a copy of the document. It would also be nice to be able to "Check Out" a document for offline modeling while traveling or in a place with slow internet. I have been to customers facilities where they have slow internet and it becomes painfully slow to work on the model.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
From product design to machine design, Onshape has what it takes to get the job done. No more sharing files with customers for review. Simply share the document with them via a web link, and the customer can see changes in real time.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is professional software, and more and more companies are using it every day. You will not be dissappointed.

From SolidWorks to OnShape!

  • August 06, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Have you switched from Word to Google Docs? You will switch from SW to OnShape, for sure! Today's world is collaborative, and OnShape is the only CAD software that has been so from the start.
What do you dislike about the product?
The obligation to be connected is certainly a handicap, but with the development of 5G, it will no longer be a problem at all.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Exchange with my clients remotely by modifying the files "live". Ensure that my suppliers always have access to the latest updated file without asking me for an email and without having to manage file versions; it's a time saver and builds trust. Everyone wins.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try to play... take the time to find your organization and get started!

CAD in the cloud is finally here

  • July 30, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
No more SolidWorks crashes due to a bug in SolidWorks that doesn't close Excel after editing or creating a sheet metal part. I don't have to redo my drawings 2~5 times because of dangling dimensions. Ease of use for my non-CAD clients so they can review drawings. The cost savings of not having the overhead of a FTP site and a web meeting hosting plan.
What do you dislike about the product?
No automatic center mark creation when clicking on a view. No ability to sketch "circles in the drawing to show location of spot welds. Sheet metal is not fully developed (bridge lances, lances, etc) but it's getting better with every release. Product support is done strictly thru email which can leads to hours and not days in getting issues resolved.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Cost savings! $5000.00/year by eliminating SolidWorks exertion fee, FTP site, and web meeting subscription. I am able to communicate with non-CAD clients in a user friendly viewer. No programs to install or cost associated with a high end laptop to run SolidWorks (approximately $5000.00 for last lap top). I am able to login to any web browser and get to work without the hassles of activating and deactivating my licensee.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Onshape is a new CAD package that is still very young. Onshape comes out with new features and product enhancements every six weeks. These updates are seamless and requires no downloads or updating of files.

Finally, cloud based 3D package

  • July 16, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Simple to run with access from every possible device. Very convenient for engineers who spend time on the road.
What do you dislike about the product?
Missing some of the features and functionalities one can find in Solidworks etc...
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use it for conceptual top level design. Primarily for marketing usage. It helps me demonstrate ideas and concepts for new solutions and products.

Don't bother trying the rest, Onshape is the best.

What do you like best about the product?
I have been using Onshape for almost 3 years, i started with a 3d printer and no CAD experience. Onshape has everything i need for my prototype designs and project needs, the interface is intuitive, simple to use, and the online tutorials and tech support is fantastic.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing to dislike, i just would like the opportunity to keep drawing during travel.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have recently started my own business, during the design stage, prototyping products and parts, Onshape has been invaluable for not just producing a prototype but for just having the ability to draw parts and share a 3D drawing with my Chinese factories has been invaluable, i have save many hours and travel cost for time spent in factories.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
For others looking for to begin drawing and prototyping wanting to work up to advanced drawing options and wanting an all in one package, Give Onshape a try, you wont regret it.

Positive. Functional software, positive customer service.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Cloud-based software design, great documentation, resources, and ease of use. Product appears designed for collaborative use (we are just beginning, so we have not really used it this way yet). Versioning is nice conceptually. Finally accessibility from the cloud is a really good idea.
What do you dislike about the product?
Telephone tech support in real time would be nice, but it's understandable that they don't have this as I am sure it is an enormous cost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Just getting started. No benefits yet. Hope to have configurable assembles etc.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do the self-learning courses.
