TimD Onshape Review
What do you like best about the product?
Ease of use...power of sharing drawings and models...overall capability.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the app takes a while to load and has stopped a couple time. Not a huge problem but has happened.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Great communication and coordination. Great for design reviews.
This is a game changing technology in the world of engineering and design.
What do you like best about the product?
Collaboration, database driven design, versioning, in-context editing, sheet metal tools are awesome.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometime the dependency on a good internet connection is a drag. It would be nice to work on an airplane, for instance. I wish we had the ability to import solidworks files that contain multiple configurations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are a small product company with a diverse team. Onshape helps to unify the team and add design resources without being co-located or having to share design files.
Very good learning curve and intuitive user experience
What do you like best about the product?
Intuitive user interface, online self-paced learning resources, and quick and reliable support staff. I picked Onshape up within less than a week and was already designing and presenting design to the team within my first week at Holo. The online self-paced learning resources allowed me to catch up quickly and also to look back at the information I need at any point in time. The support staffs also respond to tickets you submitted within a few hours during business hours. This makes me feel more comfortable in using Onshape knowing that the experts in it are within reach in terms of asking questions. The pace at which improvements were rolled out is also amazing and is always nice to see.
What do you dislike about the product?
Working with large assemblies is really slow and some over constrained mates do not generate warning, but just results in assemblies or parts not being able to move. For example, when we have a part that is constrained by two revolute mate, that should be an over-constrained part and give suggestions like use a revolute and cylindrical mate instead to not over constrain the system. Not having this was an issue because when I was working on the Top Level Assembly, some parts that were supposed to move (and it moved fine in the sub-assembly) suddenly could not move and there were no warnings or errors indicating why the part could not move. We could go back and check back at each mates in the Top Level Assembly and in the sub assembly, but that would take a lot of time and effort for a minor thing such as needing to move a part to be at the correct position.

Being a cloud-based CAD system, it is nice that you only need a browser to work on Onshape. This means that the team could have the options of choosing what system they want to use (Mac or PC). Another thing that is really nice about Onshape is its ability to save all history and also to branch out and play with the design. This also allows several people to work on the same documents (no check out system needed).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Based on my experience in being in a small and agile hardware team, Onshape has been amazing! Especially the ability to just work on the design without the worry of breaking something in the CAD. They save everything that is done in the design and also have the ability to create another workspace to experiment with your design without altering the original design. This has been amazing.
I've saved $10k per user
What do you like best about the product?
I'm a technical founder. Our business is entirely cloud-based. Why on earth would I spend a huge amount on traditional CAD software, workstations, server and PDM? OnShape has saved me so much damn money.
I moved to Onshape from Solidworks. Anyone worth their salt as an engineer or product person can learn the feature mapping in a day (i.e. oh this feature is now called that name). I have been using it for several years and have found the feature set more than sufficient and the UX keeps improving.
Basically, it's a great tool that is a joy to use, and it doesn't rely on a workstation to perform.

What do you dislike about the product?
Sparse parts (repeated unit-cell structures) can be difficult to work with. This is also an issue with many other systems I have used. It could always be faster.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We design surgical instruments and implants. We use Onshape for design, to produce production drawings and product renderings. It is an intuitive product for new hires with little CAD experience.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Jump in and try it for a project. Or are you scared of the future?
I really do think it is a great product. I have watched other companies implement Solidworks and spend a ton of money on hardware and training. I haven't had to incur those costs, which means I can spend it on other things I want. Like beer.

Great cloud solution with a fantastic UI
What do you like best about the product?
The easy access to and tracking of all my documents (can open and edit my files from anywhere and any device). There's no more issues with links between parts being broken. Being able to show anyone (co-workers, clients, support, etc.) what I'm working on by simply sharing a link is very convenient. Working on the same document with co-workers has never been easier, because I can easily see what changes they've made, compare one revision of a document to another, and all our files are stored in one place.
The fact that every step is automatically saved, saves me a lot of anxiety that goes along with making mistakes (can view or revert back to any previous version/step) or forgetting to hit save.
The tutorials, support articles, and Onshape forum made getting accustomed to Onshape very easy. I could easily find how to do something or use a certain tool on Onshape with a quick google search (they have step-by-step articles and videos for almost everything). Not to mention, their support has been quick to respond and very helpful the few times we've come across a software bug.

What do you dislike about the product?
There are some features that Solidworks has that are not yet available or fully developed on Onshape (e.g., shaded view on drawings), but this is something that is definitely improving (e.g., the recent addition of the exploded view feature). Another downside is that because it's a cloud solution, your ability to do work relies on your internet connection. If you become disconnected from your wifi or your wifi speeds are low, you might find working with Onshape very frustrating. This could however be mitigated by using an ethernet cable.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Seeing how much my friends who use Solidworks struggle with working from home has made me incredibly grateful to Onshape. Transitioning from working at the office to working from home was a lot smoother for our team, because we were already using a cloud software for most of our CAD.
Ever since our company started using Onshape, it's revolutionized how we communicate when it comes to our CAD. It has made collaborating, sharing and revision tracking much easier.

Recommendations to others considering the product:
Transitioning from using one CAD software to another is always hard, but it can definitely be worth it. Make use of the training/help videos that Onshape to get yourself familiar with all the features and workflows.
Truly is the Google Docs of CAD
What do you like best about the product?
Accessibility from any device quickly. Always up to date. Shallow learning curve for on boarding new employees.
What do you dislike about the product?
No native CAM integration yet. No native rendering integrated yet.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Collaborate with Work from home engineers. Being able to work on the same document at the same time provides easier use of innovation by having multiple inputs at the same time.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Excellent for exporting to other formats quickly
The first of its kind, Onshape brings collaboration to CAD.
What do you like best about the product?
Multiple users working on the same document, at the same time, unlike any other CAD. Also 100% cloud based without any setup or maintenance.
Remember how relieved you were when you found Google Slides and no longer had to merge slides from all your team members? Now they have that for CAD. Onshape does so much more that has allowed our small team to follow ISO procedures like a large team without slowing us down.

What do you dislike about the product?
Missing some features, but growing quickly, very active support team on the feature request forums.
Some missing features are available from third parties as mods or extensions to OnShape. We have been using an FEA tool in this way since OnShape doesn't have FEA built in, but the third party tool is so good it feels like it is built in.
I haven't even started talking about the scripting yet. If you're missing a feature, make it yourself! They have a great scripting feature, but chances are someone else had the same idea. All you need to do is just download the script that someone else made from their massive public script repository.

Easy to learn no hardware overhead, online classes are free on their website
What do you like best about the product?
Online access makes it great for working anywhere, and not having to have a powerful computer with resources to run it, is a huge plus.
What do you dislike about the product?
connection issues can become an issue from time to time, which can cause issues.

remote access helps get projects done

Best CAD Package for Collaboration
What do you like best about the product?
I never have to send a screen shot again to a client! OnShape is by far the best cloud based CAD package available. It is super intuitive to use and collaboration has never been easier.
If you are switching from Solidworks then the transition will be super easy and you may even find yourself designing a little faster.

What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes it struggles with really advanced features.
Also sometimes starts to slow down with really complex models and assemblies.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am a full time freelance design engineer and I use OnShape exclusively to design parts for my clients. The cloud-based features have been so helpful when communicating with clients.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Just try it out. You will see how awesome it is!
Onshape is the absolute finest CAD I've used
What do you like best about the product?
Sadly I don't use Onshape on even a regular basis and have little time to dig into new features that have been published. I had been a heavy user of SW in the past. Below is some of the roles that I want best. Why the need for a specific Cad defined PC. I such as the cloud oriented idea. The desire to communicate fits very well. As of now the monthly cost is fair for what you are receiving. Software updates are not required which sometimes caused havoc in SW. Re thought out updates with new apps are regularly carried out. The clients are attentive.
What do you dislike about the product?
A few technologies have required to be introduced at system level (component setups) as well as on sketches (edit layouts). Standard bookstore attributes like fittings have space for enhancement and norm shapes of materials in chinese steel are usefully semi-existent.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Onshape primarily for the development of drawings of robots and injection molding machines used in plastics industry. The configurations of Onshape were particularly helpful in making this process efficient, since the renderings consist of a number of different robots/injection molding machines models.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
OnShape ships with complete functionality for community use, with restricted space approval. If you are operating an enterprise connected to technical CAD, that is cool. We can be found quick and easy. It operates with good connection on any device. Any need to install costly equipment, because it operates on a cloud.
