Collaborate and Use Anywhere, No Data Loss

  • May 15, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
No software to install, all of the features Onshape adds are always really well thought out from a user perspective. It's online and browser based so computer requirements are minimal, and can be used from anywhere at any time.
What do you dislike about the product?
On occasion there is lag in submitting commands (clicks) due to internet or system lag. If you're aware of it, it's not too bad.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Designing various consumer related sports and leisure products and renewable energy innovations.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give it a try and look at all the benefits. Onshape is improving with upgrades (that you do nothing to benefit from) every 3 weeks. Amazing support will get you going quickly

Not your father's CAD

  • May 14, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love the collaboration. I love the ability to show CAD changes real time with a remote client. I love not having to look for files through email. I love not have to sort through 15 folders for each project to find the 'latest' rev A. What I really love though it the API. This is a real game changer for me. This opens up the possibility for me to create custom niche products with a lot fewer resources.
What do you dislike about the product?
At this point, there are not enough users. The mental picture from Solidworks to Onshape takes a while to understand. Once you are there, you will never go back. Why create 3 mates when you only need 1? I am excited to see how the new folks coming up grasp the concepts.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My customers are all remote. The travel time can take hours. With Onshape I can design interactively and build. With the help of UPS, they can have the result in their hand the next day.

My experience with On Shape to date

  • May 14, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Able to work online without having software installed and worrying about updates. Data is stored in the cloud and always accessible from any device and at any time.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes an internet slowdown can delay interaction with CAD model. There are a few things that the software does not do that I would like it to, which SolidWorks, another CAD software I previously used does or does better.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I do not lose data/work done on a CAD model due to software crash any more. I never have to "save" the work as it is constantly saving to the cloud.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try it, you will like it.

Easy for data management and new very interesting part creation tool, hard to work in large assembly

  • May 14, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
No I.T., Multi part studio, simply of use.
What do you dislike about the product?
I miss powerful sketcher and query select of Creo. Really difficult to assembly part when all fixation hole are not done. Difficult also to find mate in large assembly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The management of files. Licences are less expensive. Collaboration is easier.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Onshape is easy to deploy, training material is really good. As always, switching CAD Software is not easy but the easiest I had. They propose a lot of new way to work that make complex design easier. Except problem that I write before, the rest is good.

CAD software of the tech age

  • May 14, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
OnShape just brought CAD design to simple age of cloud computing.
No need to have software version that you need to buy each time and that you lose support over time.
You always have the latest features.
You can simply share you design to others and that just perfect.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some features aren't there yet but I know they will come at some point in time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
No need to have a powerfull workstation to do cad design.
I can have a simple laptop and design on the go anywhere as long as I have an internet connection.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take the time to understand the way it works and how to design/assemble with it.

A breath of fresh air in CAD software

  • May 13, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ubiquity of access and performance, across all platforms. No longer need to constantly install, configure, or otherwise manage our licenses.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is risk with not having local backups, in addition to lack of access when an unreliable internet connection is had (airplane wifi for example).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The onboarding rate and learning curve is extremely easy, and thusfar we've been able to technically document parts and machines that just haven't gotten done before.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
OnShape has been the most easy CAD software to implement and rollout. iPad support is amazing and incredibly functional, making it the easiest and most accessible CAD package I've ever seen.

What do you like best about the product?
Collaborate in real time. Stop managing files. History from the very beginning. Robust and stable. No IT overhead. New releases every 3 weeks. Extremely intuitive interface. No crash. Free professional learning center. Works in Chrome, Firefox or Edge. Real online help. Always using the latest version of the software. Compatible with other CAD softwares.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some features are missing compare to older CAD softwares.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- No more check-in / check-out
- No more "final revision 3.part"
- No more data lost.
- No more crash.
- No more database migration weekend.
- No more "How can I transfer this huge file to you?"
- No more "sorry we don't have the same version of the software and I can't save_as old version for you, we migrated last weekend".
- No more "sorry you were working with the wrong file version"
- No more "if only I could speak with someone to tell them about this bug or requested feature"
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Use Onshape support and follow their advices on migrating from another software. If you start from scratch, go ahead and use the Learning Center.

Much better than expected!

  • May 13, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Very simple and straightforward.
easy to learn, with a few cool insights.
features are simple and intuitive, and makes product design and V&V structured and formal. release management module helps working with approved versions, which we just initiated.

they also have really good online support and webinars, and continuously improving by adding features and new insights.
What do you dislike about the product?
Still some maturity problems:
Mate shows a bit confusing
BOM and Exploded view could be improved
Inability to measure dims in section view
when 'following' other user, not all features show
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
simple and fast machine and electrical design. cloud based is a real gem, we can work together. Mates in assembly are really cool and new in approach.
branching between versions (and merging) works great, and offers a nice replacement for PDM systems.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
just try the basic online software + 2,3 webinars, and you'll see.
no need for servers on premise and IT problems.

The best parametric CAD package.

  • May 12, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The seamless cloud integration and price. it's so amazingly beautiful ho insensately fast it is. You would assume that Fusion 360 would be faster since it runs locally. But Onshape has perfectly executed the concept of cloud computing with Onshape and it is always faster than Fusion 360. Plus the logical operations that mirror manufacturing techniques in a way that is so straightforward. The design interface leaves Fusion 360 in the dust in my opinion.
What do you dislike about the product?
The lack of integration with circuit board design like Fusion 360. I often need to design circuit boards, and yes I can model them in Onshape without trouble. But Fusion 360 in this area with it's ability to link to a PCB design is so amazingly powerful for fast mechanical design around the PCB. I also really dislike that I can't do any photo realistic renderings with the base package. The add-on apps are rarely nicely designed as Onshape itself. So I always end up exporting to fusion 360 anyway.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use it for mechanical design for consumer retail products. There simply is no comparison to any of the other CAD packages I've used. Yes it's similar, but honestly it's really so far ahead in the implementation I put it in a league of it's own.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Onshape is the future of parametric CAD, and is so incredibly powerful. Any minor shortcomings are so incredibly worth developing work arounds.
