What do you like best about the product?
I like the collaboration features, ease of use, simplified command categories, portability (the ability for me to work from virtually any computer anywhere), sheet metal design features, and the use of cloud data management
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish there was a way to deselect multiple items through a mouse gesture. (maybe a double click or something ) When I am zoomed in to a multi body part it is a slow process to deselect items.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape has helped solve my issues collaborating with clients overseas. Onshape has also made it easier for me to work on documents at home and open these documents at my offsite machine shop without having a bring a dedicated CAD computer.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are looking for a CAD solution with powerful and intuitive design tools, unparalleled collaboration features, and a future-proof data management system then Onshape is the CAD solution for you

Onshape drives my business as a mechanical designer

  • November 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I learned CAD with SolidWorks, and Onshape has been a smooth transition. I love how many tools are essentially the same, except available in a browser-based program. I've also really enjoyed the Part Studio, although it's taking me some getting used to. Versioning is really well integrated. I think the sharing features are also incredible, I can share a URL with my clients and they don't need any software other than their internet browser.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes I'll run into something that just hasn't yet been added to Onshape. These are usually quality of life features, like being able to label sketch dimensions (you can do this in SolidWorks) with helpful notes. However some things, like being able to view a grid to snap to in a drawing, seem more important (or maybe I just haven't figured out how to do it yet). I hope the development team continues to take the community's suggestion into account when doing further development. They seem to have done a great job so far.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape solves my business problem of being an all-in-one CAD software. I am a freelance mechanical designer and use Onshape for virtually all aspects of my digital design process. I do a lot of 3D printing, so with this software I can easily keep all my CAD projects organized via folders and access them anywhere. As mentioned, I think the ability to send my clients a URL so they can view CAD models is huge.

What do you like best about the product?
Onshape is easy to adapt to, no installation of software, and the web solution works very well even with several persons working on the same model. Other 3D-modelling software require costly hardware and hours of complicated installations.
What do you dislike about the product?
Limited functions related to drawing production.
Missing the possibility of showing some items that are not part of the primary model but included on the drawing, to be shown with dashed lines.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Modeling structural items in teams of 6-7 designers, with one master assembly covering all items. Very easy co-operations between each person working on the model. Very easy for other users to open and review model.

Onshape makes CAD fun again

What do you like best about the product?
One of the principal obstructions to solving engineering problems is the management of data. Change management is communicated through many teams. It is not enough to create a package and "throw it over the wall". Modern design is a collaborative and iterative approach as an organization, not separate teams. This emphasizes data management and communication. How can teams work together if only a small, specialized set of people can see CAD? Of course, there are methods for sharing neutral files, but the levels of abstraction bog down the process. Further, as engineers we often want to prototype ideas and see various options and configurations.

This is why Onshape shines. The data management is handled effortlessly in the background. When you need to check history, ever detail is there. When you want try ideas, you can branch and merge your designs. Onshape takes the hassle out of design, so you can do what you love: solve problems!

I want to give specific credit to the outstanding support team. Every request had been handled professionally within hours. Not every problem has an immediate solution, but the support team is redefining what is possible. Great work!
What do you dislike about the product?
Onshape is still building important features like Where Used and specific Sharing controls for versions and revisions. Migrating existing design can be a challenge because you need to: (1) rebuild all mates, (2) enter all metadata, and (3) create drawings from scratch. I recommend creating new design or being prepared to invest resources to convert existing design. Once you get to Onshape, you won't be sorry.

I am confident that in time the feature set will increase and eventually supersede any other CAD software on the market. Why? Because it's a cloud database ~ Onshape is a cloud database that also does CAD. The design industry doesn't understand this distinction yet, but 5 to 10 years from now, they will.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Designing in-context has been fantastic. Finally, a product that can actually delivery the promise made 25 years ago. Designers have always wanted to design with parts, holes, surfaces related to one another. You can design multi-bodies in other CAD software, but almost nobody actually designs this way because file based CAD is brittle with missing references and prone to errors. It is not 100% reliable so engineers don't use the tools available.
Onshape is different because the relationships remain in the cloud database. They won't brake or lose references. It gives designers the freedom to actually design in-context, they way we've always wanted to.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take time to understand the product. Get a couple licenses and try it on a small design project.

As an Agile Software Engineer, Onshape ticked all my checkboxes

What do you like best about the product?
I love how easy it is to share my work with my team and track and version our mechanical engineering just like we do with our software. When first looking for a CAD solution, I was blown away by OnShape's ability to change one critical dimension from early in the design process and flow that change onto all the design work based on that dimension.

As a full time software engineer and part time mechanical engineer, I'm used to being able to undo very complicated workstreams without affecting the work done around it. OnShape's ability to rollback and track versions, commits, and features is invaluable to our workflow. And the fact that its all cloud based means I can share my designs not just with my team but with stakeholders, manufacturing, and others as necessary to get our products to market.
What do you dislike about the product?
I do wish OnShape had better support for dimensions drawings. Especially when producing things like wiring diagrams or electrical hookup diagrams, when I don't need a full eCAD but just want to show a couple quick things to my manufacturers, its a little lacking. Also, support for slightly unusual fasteners, holes, threads, etc. is somewhat to be desired. I can usually work around this in my design but I have found myself occasionally modelling a fastener or some other industry standard part so I can use it in my workflow.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mechanical Engineering of products for consumers. OnShape lets me design fast based on the critical dimensions of my products, which are usually dictated to me by my suppliers. When we switch suppliers or parts, its super easy to change the required dimensions and update the product.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I looked at all the CAD systems available in 2018 and OnShape met all my needs and allowed me to involve my team and stakeholders for an affordable price.

What do you like best about the product?
A very efficient, cloud based CAD software that get complex designs done very quickly. What could you ask for more? Nice interface, rethought features, massive update every 3 weeks, amazing support!
What do you dislike about the product?
Not enough people are using it, it's a shame...
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Getting our development team more efficient. Spending less time doing CAD, and more time getting product done.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give it a try. The multi-part studio is a completely new approach, and once you get it, you never go back. You start wondering "how could I have done this wrong for so long..."

What do you like best about the product?
Their Learning Center and Help center can answer and show you how to do just about anything.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only downside to onshape is if you are having a bad internet service day on your end, then things run a little slow.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I no longer have to out source Cad work for my clients and now offer in house Cad Designing to all my clients. And this has generated thousands of dollars of income every year for my company.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
with just using Onshapes Help Center and Learning Center i went from having zero experience with Cad to being able to design and engineer complex parts and full assemblies. I recommend Onshape to just about every person that ask me where i learned to do Cad Designing

Onshape is great for 9/10 applications!

  • November 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love the cloud-based system. Being able to access Onshape from any computer is an excellent feature.
What do you dislike about the product?
When working with complex geometries, such as organic bone models, sometimes the program runs slower than you'd like. However, this can be greatly reduced by reducing the number of facets on each model, which is not always an option for high resolution, clinical translation.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use on shape to save us time and effort in designing cheap components (wedges, marker clusters), rapid prototyping of surgical cutting guides, and even developing floorplan models!

    Jake G.

OnShape has a ton of great features and is especially good for sharing and collaboration.

What do you like best about the product?
The best things about Onshape is that you can access easily on the web wherever you are and work efficiently as long as you have a good internet connection.
What do you dislike about the product?
The one drawback is that it is not the best at creating 2D drawings from the 3D models.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Really helps with design and layout and determining how everything will fit together before we have it made.

The future is bright with Onshape

  • November 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Cloud-based CAD is a big improvement over traditional platforms like Solidworks. Onshape is optimized to support multiple users working together seamlessly both in real-time and asynchronous.

Already a great CAD platform with a track record of continuous improvement. Their biweekly releases continue to improve the user experience and are free, of course. They have great customer service and genuinely seem to be invested in making their users happy by incorporating their feedback.

They have built on the established platforms with very convenient features like mates, which define the relationship between parts with a single mate instead of 2-3.
What do you dislike about the product?
Power users of old-school CAD platforms with miss the seemingly endless feature customization. Drawings are the main area where I miss some features from Solidworks.

Documents with a lot of features and parts can be slow to load, so it is important to be mindful when creating and organizing documents. Internet speed is definitely important for reload times.

Licenses have to be assigned to specific users (they are not floating). This can be annoying when licenses are limited, but can be fixed by reassigning licenses whenever needed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Part studios allow a greatly improved experience in multi-part design in a single document. Links between parts in complex assemblies are very easy to create through skeleton sketches, variables, in-context design, etc.

Sharing documents with internal teammates who don't have an Onshape license is very useful. The view only mode is more than sufficient for getting feedback from non-users. This is also useful for sharing and getting feedback from suppliers and machine shops.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give it a try! It's free to use, as long as you are okay with your files being public. It will be a change for grizzled CAD traditionalists but they will eventually appreciate its benefits. Young designers love it!
