Why I use Onshape

  • February 27, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Onshape allows me to be flexible and not tied to one computer with minimum to zero difference in performance. At work I have a CAD workstation, at home I have a 14 year old PC, with Onshape being a cloud based software, the computing is done in the cloud not on my local computer. In the event I have to work from home, I don't have to worry about lugging around my CAD workstation or invest in a new home computer, I simply log on from home and experience relatively the same performance on my old home PC as I would with a newer, more powerful machine. To add to this Onshape also runs on my phone. I have done some quick edits and even complete CAD models on my phone when I don't even have access to a computer.
What do you dislike about the product?
The downside I deal with is that Onshape is still new and lacks some of the functionality more mature CAD software has. This is especially true in the sheet metal side of modeling and documentation. I have experienced this same situation about 20 years ago with traditional CAD software. Back in 2000 when I started using 3D CAD, it seemed sheet metal enhancements were always few and far between. I am optimistic that Onshape, having enhancements added every 3 weeks, will break this trend in the CAD industry.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape documents allows me to keep one single source of truth. An Onshape document is unique in that it is not just an area for CAD data. When working in a manufacturing setting there is more than just CAD data needed to ensure the accuracy and quality of a product. In my field I need material test reports (MTR) , weld procedures (WPS) , quality documents, etc. With Onshape I can store all of this in one Onshape document. At anytime during the life cycle of the product I can add or remove contributors and also set the amount of access by setting just viewing or full editing permissions. No need to search different areas of a local based server or computer for a document, it is all just one internet link away stored in the cloud. Information contained within the Onshape document can be accessed anywhere, anytime, on any device. Comments and revisions or made in the same environment that the design is done so there is no need for a separate viewer or scanning and filing of a marked up .pdf or printed drawing.

Comprehensive tool for product development

  • January 09, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is very helpful for me to manage the product designing and offers me a convenient way of usage, I can operate it on my laptop and even in my mobile, by which it has become a piece of cake to assist my team. Further I feel more confident to develop new designs and shapes and easily I can manage the assemblies and drawings. Onshape provides me a secure and easy way to share the data with my team members.
What do you dislike about the product?
For this steep learning curve is required with it as it is a technical tool thus more training videos should be provided in this regard. Furthermore its installation and initiation was a bit tough for me may be it depended on the product knowledge.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This tool is very easy to configure and process various types of file format. In addition it is easily customizable and till now I have professionally organized the bill of Materials (BOMs). Onshape has allowed me to control the on sets of version and provides me effective reporting about the complete history of the editing in creation design.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is the most appropriately designed tool. It will help you a lot in bringing modification and improvement in the efficiency of product. It will prove useful and helpful in organizing your work and further helps you in boosting the work process.

In form, I can easily share designs with customers worldwide

  • December 16, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
With SolidWorks I learned CAD and the transition to Onshape was smooth. I like how many tools, except in browser-based programs, are basically same for. I also really liked this same Part Studio, but it's a bit familiar to me. Very well integrated versioning. I believe that share capabilities are unbelievable as well I can express a URL to my customers and those who shouldn't need apps apart from their browser.
What do you dislike about the product?
For drawings of dimensions I would like OnShape to have better support. Especially when I make things like cable schemes or electric hookup schemes, so if I wouldn't need a packed eCAD, but only want to show my manufacturers several things quickly, it lacks a little. In addition it is somewhat desired to support unusual fasteners, trousers, threads etc. I can work on this usually in my design, but sometimes I have model an attachment or some other standard industry part so that I can make use of my workspace.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
One of our main problems is that we depend on Google for our design files to be shared and stored. This has lead to issues where folders can get corrupted or down to the backup and synchronization of the files. File sharing can take hours, leading to some users working locally and uploading when needed to back up collaborative effort problems. Overnight this changed how work is thought of and handled with the collaboration features and the built-in ERP system Onshape.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure that Onshape's capabilities match what you try. But it's a very clever design framework, there are a few main aspects which can cause more problems than advantages depending on your requirements. In that no upgrade or installation is necessary, the speed of notifications is remarkable and almost invisible, and therefore expansion of the platform is exciting.

A great platform improving at a rate no other can or will match.

What do you like best about the product?
As stated in my title, this is a great platform mostly due to the rate of improvements. Its functionality started somewhat limited, but I've been on it for a very long time.
What do you dislike about the product?
Dislike, nothing, I wish it had more analysis capabilities, but the apps are good enough.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
improved part to part matching with multi part models. Control control control the state of things is managed very well.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Having worked with Cad since Autocad 1.4, and used over a dozen systems, I often found each had specific strengths, and yet all had similar weaknesses. The complexity of tracking changes was always some extra footwork. Not so with Onshape, and while Autodesk's product I am told is quite good, I got completely burned in the mid 90's buying Mechanical Desktop with explicit assurances it could generate surfaces I needed, and in the end, it simply couldn't. The answer from them was "sorry about that" just shy of 10 grand and a sorry is what I get when it failed to do the one thing I was told it would and the only thing I needed it to do. Since that time I really don't want to support them on principal. Shortly after I found Solidworks and it was quite a nice improvement. The little issues Solidworks had were small until after about 8 releases these little things were never really addressed, and they grew only because they could have been addressed. 5 long years ago I found Onshape, I liked what it seemed to be capable of and the potential promise of what it could do. I played for a few days and then jumped in and abandoned all other CAD for any project started from that point forward. The 2D drawing module lagged but as mentioned above it improved at such a good rate, and if they didn't make something I needed it is truly my fault for not asking, because they have been so very responsive to the users.

Revolutionary Paradigm Shift in 3D Mechanical CAD

  • November 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility and platform independence of the software
The inbuilt data and revision management, no more version control issues
Share and collaborate in real-time
Excellent customer support & service
Constantly developing feature set
A really quick tool, especially for simpler tasks
Easy to learn with excellent tutorials and feature examples
The assembly style with mate connectors is really powerful
Configurations feature is sensational
Really intuitive interface
Great platform for sharing with clients quickly and easily. They can follow along and review design ideas in real time.
What do you dislike about the product?
Speed can be slow at times
Occasionally features are missing or are counterintuitive/dont work as expected although if you notify your account rep, they normally are very receptive and look for ways to improve the product and remove the pain point as quickly as possible.
Limited integration with OEM downstream software, Machine CAM packages etc.
No ability to work offline, on plane, away from good internet etc. Being able to "check-out" a document package would be wonderful
No being able to apply mate connectors to multiple parts at the same time
Not being able to drive configurations and patterns with logic based equations. Eg. space holes around the PCD line, max hole spacing = x, min hole spacing = y. Spacing between holes to be calculated based on line length etc.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Diversified CAD Teams
Better client integration
Rapid development times, even for diverse projects
Reduced learning curve for new staff
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I really would worry too much, if you have used Solidworks, Inventor etc. you will be right at home. There are a few differences but you will pick them up really quickly and feel at home in no time at all.

Great CAD Tool

  • November 23, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Cloud based platform.,
All the 3D functionalities of a clunky CAD tool being made accessible without installing anything in your workstation!

It can be accessed using a tablet too
What do you dislike about the product?
Drawing capabilities are not at par with other CAD tools. But I think it will be remedied soon, since the update comes more often than not these days.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Working in the comfort of my home, with real time discussion with colleagues about the product I am modelling.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Onshape uses this so called Part Studio that may be confusing to first time users. The idea here is to unlearn what you have from other CAD tools and embrace what Onshape has. It will be a lot easier that way, and you will soon fall in love with its unique but great olatform.

30 years in the design field and this is the best CAD system that I have ever used.

  • November 20, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Onshape is very powerful yet easy to use and I never loose data. I can be out on the shop floor and open models with my phone and verify information.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is missing a few features, but they are constantly making improvements.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Onshape for everything from modeling complex draft on castings and shutoff on cavity models to simulating motion of a 6 axis robot to validating the fit and function of a CNC fixture in a 5 axis CNC machine.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Once you try it you will love it. They have solved so many of the painful things about CAD software all the while keeping it very user friendly.

its the future

  • November 20, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
OnShape allows for real engineer to engineer, and full team collaboration. it solve the ongoing issues of constant updates, to both software and hardware. it is intuitive to use once you forgot the old ways of how software used to work.
What do you dislike about the product?
my only concern is overall cloud security for all things in the cloud as well as the loss of all usable materials if and when you do not have a connection. but for the most part we can no longer perform our tasks without a connection so it is one of those new regalities we just need to get used to.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
we definitely are seeing a reduction in overall engineering time on projects. we really benefit form the ability to easily share our data with others.

What do you like best about the product?
Collaboration in realtime, no installation, instant updates with no need to update software, cheaper hardware compared to other CAD software. Commenting feature is great, cloud storage with no file sharing is wonderful!
What do you dislike about the product?
Not very well every evolved drawing creation tools, sometimes slow loading of projects. No monthly payment options anymore.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Multiuser realtime collaboration makes design faster with less errors and cheaper than any other software solutions. Low maintenance costs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Just give a try!
