Great CAD and Support Experience

  • November 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The CAD software itself is top notch. The cloud aspects work as expected, and the updates are frequent. They have abundant and valuable training and help articles to get the most out of the product.
What do you dislike about the product?
Honestly, I dislike very little about it. Overall it's a great product, and you can talk to an actual support person to get help if there is an issue.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have no dedicated IT person so setting up a PDM server and managing accounts with local applications would not be possible. We are able to run pretty much whatever machines we want and be prodcutive.

An enabling surprise

What do you like best about the product?
This platform is powerful enough to get the job done, but most importantly incredibly forgiving and flexible. It enabled me to make parts I wouldn't have made so integrated before.
What do you dislike about the product?
With large parts it can get VERY bogged down. There is also often features I would consider staples, missing. They are always adding new features, but there are still a handful I really miss.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
CADing without a computer infrastructure at a company. It enabled me to create an engineering department solely on personal computers while still being onsite.

Primary CAD system for 3 years

  • October 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Entirely cloud based and fairly full-featured CAD system
What do you dislike about the product?
There is some lag for selections vs. a PC-based system.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
There is no need to maintain a separate file system, either on-site or cloud-based. Allows the use of multiple computers with a simple log-in. Less powerful computers vs PC based systems are required.

What do you like best about the product?
I like the cloud base and the hardware independence. The use of a web browser means that unforeseen problems and details can be discussed on site and collaberation is straightforward.
The interface is mostly intuative and was an easy transfer from earlier competative systems. The direct, simple business model is refreshing and much better than the "pyramind selling" structure of other vendors. This results in a less expensive investment, but with just as effective a result. On the few occasions that I have needed help, both the online and email based help was effective.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some functions do not work as expected. In particular, the "Mate" functions, they are almost too clever and sometimes produce unexpected results.
I wish that I could import and edit models from other systems like Solidworks.
When materials are allocated to a part, it would be helpful if the appearance changed to suit. This would to save time and indicate that the property had been set correctly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape provides direct communication with my customers who do not have CAD systems.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do it! If you are an experienced CAD user, it is a relatively painless transfer to the Onshape system. Your internet connection must be fast to obtain the benefits.

    Mechanical or Industrial Engineering

You'll need to drag me kicking and screaming back to old style CAD.

What do you like best about the product?
The speed and ease with which you can develop configured 3D part and assemblies.
What do you dislike about the product?
The drawing tools. But they are improving at an incredible rate.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In product development, Onshape makes it easy to explore the design space. Iterate and home in on the best solution fast.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Properly assess the drawing tools.

Andres Pieroni Review

What do you like best about the product?
How the constraints work in the part studio is simply amazing, it helps a lot when modeling several parts that have geometrical dependencies between them.

The mate connectors mechanism for making assemblies is also amazing. It is so easy and intuitive to make complex assemblies in just a few clicks.
What do you dislike about the product?
When you click on parts/surfaces/edges you need to click them again, or click on the void, to unselect them, and because of that, I often have to zoom out to click the void when I mistakenly selected some parts. It would be a lot easier if by simple pressing escape the un-selection happens.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm a professional product designer and I use Onshape as my main CAD software for all my designs. Onshape helps you design a complete product within the same part studio with different constrains features and it benefits designing faster and more detailed.

Onshape from the perspective of a New designer

  • August 18, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The lack of errors that are unrelated to the problem at hand. To explain further, with every CAD packages I've tried, there is a caution you have to use be the computer may crash or the system may completely fall apart because you tried something new. Unfortunately, that results in a stressful mindset that has nothing to do with the actual engineering issues at hand. Useing Onshape has completely changed my perspective on changes and as a result, I believe it can have a very large impact on the long-term gains as a result of faster innovation and fostering creativity with the peace of mind that there's no way to get into a corner that you can not get out of. I never have to worry about losing anything and trying new things and optimizing later is possible because of the flexibility provided by the features such as branches, versions.

Also, I have to mention the in-context features, basically, if you like to take advantage of in-context and procedurally generated CAD. Some of the features provided in Onshape really work better than anything else I've tried and that's a place where you can really take advantage of the cloud-based system to perform very complex relations. Which are again, very easy to mention and update and mo. Again with the peace of mind that you're not going to lose anything, ever. It's very freeing feeling, which I believe also improved the bottom line by decreasing the time/difficulty to make a change and reducing the chances of any non-value-added work like recovering files...
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the things that can be improved: Drawing Features, Release Management, Assembly folders, etc. All of those are sufficient for most uses and they are constantly improving the system. This update gets pushed to everyone at the same time so you can rely on the package getting better over time without and without additional work, like updating local versions which may not be backwards compatible... that now seems like a pointless complexity.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- It's easier to make changes (Faster, less expensive, easier to iterate)
- The configurations and in-context design features are amazing
- Branches and version history management
- Custom Feature scripts
- Linked tabs
- Rendering Addons
- Simulation Addons

Future proof CAD software

  • August 18, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The best thing about OnShape is how easy it is to manage and share file and documents. Moreover, OnShape lets you work simultaneously on the same file with other collegues, resulting in a shorter time to finish a project.
What do you dislike about the product?
Being a "young" software it lacks of some helpful features, found in other CAD softwares. However, I'm confident that is only a matter of time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can now read all file formats from other CAD system and easily import them on our the cloud library.
We have all the files on the cloud library, easily accessible by our team in every monent, and we don't need powerful computers to manage big CAD files

What do you like best about the product?
The fact that we do not have to worry about maintaining software or backing up our projects, as well as the ease with which we can collaborate internally and with our customers.
What do you dislike about the product?
It would be great to have more scan-based design (reverse engineering) functionality.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mostly we optimize designs to suit additive manufacturing.
