An everyday everyway game-changer

What do you like best about the product?
OnShape is fundamentally different than other CAD platforms in many ways. Each and every click seems faster and more intuitive, assembly mates take about 1/4 of the time to apply and adjust. They’ve built this from the ground up and the founder basically took everything they knew and disliked about SW and picked each feature apart until it was more streamlined. Being in the cloud, the reliance on heavy-duty hardware is effectively removed as all of the heavy lifting is done on their end. Continual updates are something I really look forward to now. Simple and quick contact with their dev team means you have a say in subsequent releases. The best part for me however is that there is no save button. I’ve used this platform every single day for two years and not once have I lost a single minute of work. Every click is traced, every revision tracked and stored.
What do you dislike about the product?
Let's see; you can't edit tolerances on hole callouts, sketching in drawings lacks features and seems to be in its infancy, when you insert from partstudio to assembly, the parts remain in their orientation as sketched however, when you place a mate it does not auto-fill the dimensions. There is one major flaw in the drawings module in that you can't easily change BoM headings (update: in the Standard and Professional packages there seems to be no way at all to add custom BoM headers.I'm told this feature does exist in Enterprise but the workflow still looked painful).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
On any given day we’re building products for a variety on industries including tightly toleranced machine parts for industrial use, heavy structural weldments, medical devices, plastic assemblies and enclosures for agricultural use etc. If it’s anything, it’s versatile.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
When you try it, if you're a traditional CAD user, go right to the Learning section as there are a few key differences. Namely, mates are fundamentally different.

Onshape product review, intermediate CAD user

  • November 16, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Document file structure makes it very easy to use and organise. Part Studio, mate connector and Assembly features are very useful and can help turn around models very quickly and better than most other CAD systems. It's browser based, no installation required which is very usefyl
What do you dislike about the product?
Importing CAD from other parametric systems are default as solids (lose the feature history). However, the CAD tools make it easy to manipulate models once inside.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I can create prototypes very quickly with Onshape, but also use it for creating test rigs and 3D printed mockups. It's user-friendly, especially when creating assemblies. Great online community and training modules mean its easy to get started.

Ease of use and access

  • November 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Shared files/docs and running the software in the cloud and like Google Drive makes internal collaboration at our company easier. I also appreciate being able to change the way the mouse and keys work depending on what prior software one was used to.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not that many companies appear to be using it yet vs. other programs like Solidworks. I would love to see more adoption. We are also hiring, and I have yet to see OnShape on any resumes from school or work experience.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are drawing out our 3D architecture with OnShape and looking at it from several views including internal microscopic features and external macroscopic features. I specifically do the microscopic designs and then feed them into a multiphysics simulation tool.

Onshape is the future of CAD

  • November 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I feel like Onshape is really what CAD should be. Super intuitive user interface. It runs on basically any browser and runs pretty independently of my computer specs. Excellent PDM and "PLM-Lite" features. Collaborative tools are powerful. Every feature has been thoughtfully designed, especially mates and assembly features. Lots of great custom features from the community, too.
What do you dislike about the product?
As with most SaaS products, there are occasional bugs that crop up every now and again. Usually, they are resolved pretty quickly and aren't wildly disruptive. Often I've found bugs relate to surfacing features.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm doing consumer product design, collaborating with a 3-person team across the country. I am an ideal Onshape customer and Onshape works very well for me and my team.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Onshape is like other CAD programs in a lot of ways, but in some ways it is different. In most ways that it is different, it is better; but it is different nonetheless. Make sure you learn about these differences (I recommend Onshape bootcamp) while evaluating the product.

Excellent Versioning, Built in PLM, Easy to Use and Admin

  • November 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Onhsape has a very intuitive built-in versioning and PLM, which means no file management and eliminates uncontrolled copies. The ability to design co-dependant parts in a single view and in various contexts is powerful, which you would use for state-specific features such as closed or open state features.
What do you dislike about the product?
Users with Solidworks or Inventor experience will likely be stuck using outdated methods such as planes in an Assembly. Onshape uses mate connectors which serve all the same functions and more, but this takes a little getting used to. Some minor features are missing that require some work arounds: a simple example is you can't use variables for side counts (I expected this would be coming soon, though).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easy to use CAD system providing a single source of truth for files and drawings and a CAD solution that sensible includes PLM as part of the design instead of an afterthought.

Good for somewhere between Hobby and Enterprise

  • November 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It was extremely easy to learn. Terrific learning resources. Very helpful feature-by-feature content.
What do you dislike about the product?
A colleague who is an engineer didn't like that there was no 3D Sketching. I didn't mind, but I don't have context on how valuable that is.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I made Household objects, safety items, out-of-stock or replacement parts for baby products, connectors, inventions.

Onshape - The Future is Now

  • November 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Onshape's largest strengths come from being cloud-based software. All team members work on the product, not copies of copies of the product. There is significant time and cost savings from not managing copies of data that can only be appreciated by experiencing the difference yourself. The modeling environment is very familiar coming from a CAD software like SolidWorks. Features are being added constantly and we can share data with clients easily. Onshape doesn't require us to maintain a server and makes it simple to organize data. We spend little time managing our tools so we can spend more time solving problems for our clients.
What do you dislike about the product?
I have found situations where a feature does not exist that does in other CAD software. Fortunately, Onshape technical and community support have helped work around these situations. Features are being added all the time and the Onshape's foundation is stong. One day, I anticipate users of other CAD will be missing features that exist in Onshape.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We design mechanical parts and assemblies for prototype and industrial robots. Onshape allows us to focus most of our time on solving these problems rather than managing data. We can easily share data amongst our team and clients.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's a little painful at first to make the switch but well worth it in the long run. Keeping tools simple is key to tackling complex problems. From the wise words of Senator Palpatine: "Do it."

Onshape is cloud-based and convenient to use with no crashes on files, even when working with large assemblies.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some features are still under development.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am using Onshape to help me with product design and development. It helps me focus on design problems. Onshape is the easiest to use and the lowest cost to maintain compared to other major players in the CAD software.

Great CAD experience

  • November 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The user interface is straightforward to comprehend. If there's a feature or idea I would like to use or try out, I can easily find relatable content at the learning center or find something useful in the feature search bar. The cloud-based nature of Onshape is exceptionally convenient to work as a team, and it is not at the expense of loading time!
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes when an error arises, the features shown in red would not necessarily inform the user of what is wrong; instead, it only indicates that the feature could not generate itself.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are developing and designing a concentrated solar thermal receiver using Onshape. The release system in Onshape helps us to identify a particular part within the complex system. The generated models could be exported in many formats and are compatible with many multi-physics simulation softwares.
