Mimecast - thorough, reliable, extremely useful
What do you like best about the product?
I love that Mimecast catches almost all spam and presents the user with choices, so that admins do not have to get involved. The admin portal is amazingly fast.
What do you dislike about the product?
It costs more than I would like but provides a good service.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mimecast prevents the user from being barraged by zillions of spam emails, blocks malware in email, and sandboxes specific types of attachments for testing.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Look at all the features and the minimal admin time requirement.
Pretty effective. Not sure if worth the admin overhead.
What do you like best about the product?
Definitely is a solid wall against unwanted and dangerous email. Dashboards are clear and easy to see data
What do you dislike about the product?
Administration is very clunky, unclear.
Simple modifications to policy or exceptions require much more time and effort than competitors. As an experienced SysAdmin (though new to this tool), I needed 2x support calls to solve a firedrill.
Simple modifications to policy or exceptions require much more time and effort than competitors. As an experienced SysAdmin (though new to this tool), I needed 2x support calls to solve a firedrill.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Almost zero spam hitting our Gmail instance. Phishing reports are less than 5x per month. Almost removes the need for users to be phishing-conscious.
Consistent performance and excellent support
What do you like best about the product?
Good support for SAAS is imperative, and Mimecast support exceeds that in the experience we have had. The feature we use are reliable and we see new features added regularly. Any issues in service is met with thorough and timely information as well as there being almost no interruption in services provided in three years. The products we use are completely configurable for our needs and there seems to be no shortage in customization to meet requirements we have seen.
What do you dislike about the product?
The learning curve for some of the features we use requires a call to support to fully understand. This is not a problem, more of a struggle for me to find something I dislike.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Complete control over blocked senders and allowing users to manage their own permitted and blocked lists.
Complicated, but worth it.
What do you like best about the product?
The service is very thorough. So thorough that sometimes it frustrates users who want or need simple attachments, but Mimecast knows the potential for those attachments to be malicious, so it blocks them. Personally I'd rather be safe than sorry.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is a very complicated service to use. VERY. If I'm modifying a rule, or adding some exlusion somewhere, I almost always have to have tech support help me out. Or especially on a Discovery case if we're involved in a lawsuit. But the day to day operations I've managed to get much better at over time, so I'm feeling better about some basic tasks.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I guess I'm not really having problems, except what I mentioned above, that sometimes users need or want certain attachments that Mimecast blocks, and I have to get Mimecast technical support to help me make rules for those exclusions. I think the benefits are self evident. We're a much safer company for using Mimecast, and my users are definitely facing fewer online dangers in their day to day work experiences.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take the time to have your admins do training. And then have them do it again.
Reliable and secure
What do you like best about the product?
To my knowledge, we've never had an outage in the two years we've been using Mimecast Email Security. Most of the email attacks we've encountered, Mimecast has had a solution available; i.e. Impersonation Protect.
What do you dislike about the product?
Most of my time I spend in Mimecast is to troubleshoot email delivery issues. I find it difficult to almost impossible to determine what module blocked a particular message. Similarly, while it has improved somewhat, I still have to use different searching tools to find the details I need. I wish there was ONE search tool and ALL the details (Like SMTP header info) were available; instead of needing to 'hop' around. Hopefully that makes sense...
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Clearly spam blocking and Malware, but more importantly Impersonation Attacks and unsafe URL checking. Without these features, I'd have to spend time with end users cleaning systems of malware or warning users of Impersonation Attacks.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
While possibly more powerful than previous tools used, it will require additional research/learning time before deploying settings/features.
Mimecast Email Protection is robust tool and has saved our company time and energy.
What do you like best about the product?
What I like best about Mimecast Email Protection is the granularity which you can apply policies for different types of email. On top of the normal spam scoring feature we also leverage the Impersonation Protection, Attachment Protection and Anti Spoofing Protection to guard against malicious email attacks.
What do you dislike about the product?
One of our biggest frustration is having multiple policies set up in the Impersonation Protection that apply to specific executive users but still having the generic policy be applied instead of the specific one. I was told by Mimecast support there was no way to ensure the specific user policy is applied instead of the generic one.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
One of the biggest problems that has been solved using Email Security is weeding out the impersonation attacks and phishing and whaling email attacks we see come through on a daily basis. The other problem is protecting our users from potentially harmful links in seemingly safe emails.
Also, protecting our users from emails claiming to be from an internal address but sent from an external source.
Also, protecting our users from emails claiming to be from an internal address but sent from an external source.
An excellent Email Security and Threat Protection solution.
What do you like best about the product?
The granularity with which we can manage users, groups of users and how they interact with the system by setting up notifications of quarantines, journals of held emails or even just tagging on email delivered to their mailbox depending on their level of sophistication or work function and needs. We also appreciate the ability to watch for outgoing PII or PHI in order to place holds on potential information leaving our environment. This is only a little bit of what you can do with Mimecast's solution because it is so highly customizable. Mimecast is always ready to help with guides, instruction and web based learning.
What do you dislike about the product?
Because of the level of granularity and customization it is sometimes not super intuitive but there are always trade-offs.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Automated classification and holds of potential PII and PHI leaving our environment. Compliance tracking. Customized user templates for different usage styles and capabilities. Reduction and control of unnecessary email, phishing attempts and malicious content.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I'd highly suggest giving it a short or Demoing it. You can't go wrong using Mimecast to get better control and protection. They also have secure mail options so that people outside your organization can access emails that you need tighter control for. While their documentation is top notch, don't be afraid to ask questions on how to do things. They'll point your in the right direction or walk you through what needs to be done.
Mimecast does a lot of things great with a few minor annoyances
What do you like best about the product?
I like how Mimecast gives you a lot of control over various policies and definitions.
What do you dislike about the product?
There's a few things that can be annoying... For example, the Greylisting feature requires previously unknown senders to retry messages to verify RFC compliance. A lot of OTP servers are not RFC compliant apparently which causes those messages to be rejected. These emails come from randomized email addresses, so you're unable to add them to you permitted senders list. The issue could be avoided if the Greylisting feature had an option to hold the email for review instead of flat out rejecting them.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Email protection, one benefit is knowing that if Mimecast says the email is safe it probably is. There is a lot of scanning that goes on behind the scenes and it gives peace of mind.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take your time in implementing and do a lot of testing.
Great Product for Phishing Scams and Email Threats - YS at OCBF
What do you like best about the product?
I like that you can get tips about email threats like Phishing. The Administrator console has so many features that are so easy to understand. The messaging feature makes it easy to find any particular email that you are looking for, searching by the hour, day, month or a customized date range. It is just organized very well.
What do you dislike about the product?
The search feature sometimes takes a couple of tries to find what you are looking for. I usually can find a great document on any mimecast issue in the Mimecast community as well.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The multi-layered protection against phishing email security issues is fantastic. Our users are learning to think first before clicking, especially for email with known staff names. It trains them to hover over the email address, allowing them to see that the email address is not from our company domain, but from an impostor.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be prepared to ask questions related to your business model.
Good reliable product
What do you like best about the product?
The various tools available and how they are organized for easy access
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the configurations can be quite complex to do and the help articles are sometimes hard to follow
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The ability to look back at emails using the Archive Search tool has really helped us countless times now
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Mimecast seems like it works for organizations big and small and has worked out really well for us
