The dynamic analysis feature helps secure risky web applications

  • August 09, 2023
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for Veracode is to secure our software development lifecycle. It's deployed in a couple of countries and connected to multiple applications. It's used by five development teams, each of which has a different focus, such as digital channels, CRM, ERP, backend deployment, and billing. We also have a team that coordinates all of the efforts of the secure development policies. That team sets the guidelines and policies. The entire development team has about 20-30 people.

How has it helped my organization?

Veracode has sped up the development cycle, helping us bring products to the market faster. I work at an IT services company with hundreds of customers who have various needs for different kinds of tools. That doesn't mean we use Veracode for all our customers, but for certain customers, it's critical because the solution reduces the amount of time needed to prevent and detect issues. Bringing secure applications into production is essential.

We can't just rely on our development teams to make, test, and manually review the code. We need powerful tools that provide a strong framework for detecting vulnerabilities and scanning application components. Penetration testing is the most important because hackers break into the application and access the information.

Dynamic analysis is also crucial for web applications, which can be risky. Veracode can dynamically detect vulnerabilities and block traffic. It is sometimes hard to differentiate real users from hackers. Dynamic analysis must be implemented with a user-sensitive perspective.

I work in Latin America, and there are regulations on information security and the use of customer information. The most vital areas are things like health information and finance. You can face penalties for failing to protect customer information, so it's critical for us to secure our code during development. Any vulnerable code or application component can risk disclosing customer information from customers and allowing an outsider to penetrate the systems or databases.

Veracode offers visibility throughout the entire development lifecycle. SecOps is an essential framework inside the organization currently because we need to deliver applications to market faster while improving code quality. It's crucial to be careful when using code generated by community sources. We need to test the final applications and also the components and packages in any code repository we use.

We're deploying complex pipelines and utilizing CI/CD. For example, Veracode is important when connecting management tools, code repositories, and various cloud components. Having that integration and capacity to connect to various tools in the DevOps framework is vital for the DevOps team. Every business must decide its risk tolerance and set a threshold of vulnerability permissions in the application to detect. It's really powerful if you can configure the threshold correctly.

Developer confidence depends on their capacity to understand, and Veracode has to detect vulnerabilities and provide suggestions for correcting them. Sometimes it's an upgrade; sometimes not. It also provides different kinds of information to the developers.

Veracode has had an enormous impact on our ability to detect flaws. It's risky if we don't have the capacity to detect vulnerabilities in the earliest stage of development before the applications go into production. It's also an important time-saving tool. It reduces the time spent manually addressing vulnerabilities by about 20-30 percent.

What is most valuable?

I like Veracode's static analysis. It was one of the core development tools when I worked with a telecommunication company where we were delivering new features for various applications and purposes each week, such as CRM, data channels, compliance, traffic data, etc.

Most of the time, the key thing was to ensure the security of digital channels and reduce the risk of any breach that could cause a security issue. It's critical to maintain the security of sensitive information transferred from our customers to the sales staff. Keeping that data secure is important for the customer relationship and also for compliance and recurring sales.

I rate Veracode 10 out of 10 for its ability to prevent vulnerable code from entering production. It has a lot of useful and intuitive features. In previous settings, static analysis was one of the primary use cases, but dynamic analysis is also helpful. Veracode is highly valuable because one vulnerability could result in service downtime or worse: a leak of customer information.

The investment in the tool is justified because we can detect and prevent vulnerabilities much earlier in the process. Software composition analysis is also vital when we use open-source middleware or backend components for business-critical functions like bringing information from one source to another or connecting one application to another.

What needs improvement?

Veracode can improve the price model and how they bill the final offer to customers. It's based on the amount of traffic. For example, you can buy 1 gigabyte distributed across various applications, and each one can consume part of the whole allotment of traffic data.

You pay for all of the time that the tool is running, not for the number of scans. There are specific rules governing the amount of traffic applications can consume from the allotment you have. I would like the pricing to be more personalized. For example, some companies don't have a large budget for this kind of tool, whereas a large enterprise can acquire this kind of solution and pay for it. However, I'm an IT consultant working with various types of customers in different industries, including finance, insurance, and telecommunications.

For how long have I used the solution?

I started using Veracode at least three years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veracode is a highly stable platform. I haven't experienced any service disruption, and the performance is solid.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I've used Veracode in a telecommunication company with a huge environment and more than a hundred applications. I don't have experience with smaller-scale use cases, but I know the cloud is quite scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Veracode support nine out of 10. We get support from the resellers and direct support from Veracode analysts. We call the support team or the architect when there is a serious technical isssue.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I haven't used a commercial tool like Veracode before. It depends on where I'm working, but the most common tool we use is an open-source solution called SonarQube.

How was the initial setup?

Veracode is straightforward to deploy. It's not hard to connect it, and we had support from a local vendor to help us integrate it into our dev lifecycle. It required only one person from my team.

What about the implementation team?

We had assistance from our local reseller, and the experience was great because we had a direct connection from the partner to the brand. We have a local team member who was in charge of the resell process.

What was our ROI?

We calculate the return on investment primarily based on the risk. We calculate the ROI annually, but it's not very detailed. We factor in the risks associated with the loss of customer information loss, penalties for noncompliance, etc. In the worst-case scenario, we estimate that could potentially lose up to $1 million annually.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing model could be more flexible, and Veracode could be more accessible to smaller enterprises. We obtained Veracode through a consultancy. Veracode sets the price through consultation with our reseller, but I have yet to get a direct quotation without any other reseller in the middle. If you are worried about the price, I would say that you could request more information and do a trial, then see if you can negotiate an offer.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We decided to use Veracode without comparing it to any other kind of solution, we had a kind of consultancy from one of the companies, the IT services company that was one of our partners, and they worked close to us, and we selected Barracuda the tool that we needed.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veracode nine out of 10. It's an excellent solution for securing the development lifecycle. I recommend starting with a trial and getting in touch with the account team to explore all of the different features.

With extensive reporting capabilities and a user-friendly interface, the tool is also highly scalable

  • August 09, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I have helped other companies implement Veracode Static Analysis in their IT environment. In our company, we need to scan many .NET applications using Veracode, and we could scan our software since it is a SaaS solution, after which we process the reports to improve the product.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of the solution are its extensive reporting capabilities and user-friendly interface.

What needs improvement?

There are certain shortcomings in Veracode's static analysis engine. I would improve Veracode's static analysis engine to make it capable of identifying vulnerabilities with low false positives.

The product is good, and if improvements are required, then such improvements should not be significant enough. There may be a slight scope to improve the product's integration capabilities. The product can also consider improving its support of different .NET versions and other programming languages, like Java.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veracode Static Analysis for three or four months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Our company faced some issues with the tool, but the support team solved these issues quite quickly. The stability of the tool is high. Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. We can implement the tool in different DevOps environments and projects, because of which we can create groups of applications and apply different policies to application groups, making it an enterprise-level tool. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's technical support helped us solve different problems related to Veracode, including some of its use cases. Veracode's support helped our company get around a problem and how to set up the scan rules correctly when we had some unexpected errors during the scanning process. I rate the technical support a nine out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with Snyk. I used Snyk a year ago. Snyk doesn't support the version of the .NET applications we use in our company, so we decided to move to Veracode.

What about the implementation team?

The initial setup was easy since it is a SaaS solution and a well-documented product at the same time. In our company, we don't need to spin up a server to install something since we simply use the web interface and integrate the web interface with the DevOps environment.

On a scale of one to ten, where one is a hard setup and ten is an easy setup, I rate the initial setup phase an eight or nine.

The solution is deployed on the cloud. In our company, we use Microsoft Azure DevOps for our environment, but I don't know the environment in which Veracode gets used in our company. Veracode offers a web interface and API, so I don't know their cloud solutions.

The deployment is quite fast, but its overall quickness in terms of deployment depends on the number of applications you want to scan. If you want to scan one application, the deployment can be quickly done since we need to integrate Veracode into our DevOps environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of the product depends upon the number of codes or the number of applications.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend those planning to use the solution check the system requirements and choose a solution that supports programming languages and .NET Framework versions that record scans.

I am not sure if it is one of the best solutions because I am not an expert in other solutions available in the market. Somehow, I personally feel it is one of the best tools in the market.

I rate the overall product a nine out of ten.

Performs static analysis, dynamic analysis, and software composition analysis

  • August 01, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use Veracode for its code analysis features, which include static code analysis, dynamic code analysis, and checking for security flaws in our code. Mainly, we utilize Veracode for application security, making code security one of our primary use cases.

How has it helped my organization?

Since implementing Veracode, we have seen significant improvements in our code's security and the overall code development process. Veracode has been instrumental in enhancing our code security and streamlining the development workflow. In the past, we relied heavily on third-party applications that were not directly aligned with our codebase. However, now we can seamlessly integrate Veracode into our application process, saving a substantial amount of time. Veracode has not only improved our security setup but also enhanced the overall security of our organization.

Before implementing Veracode, the same process that used to take one hour now only takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Veracode's policy reporting for insurance compliance with industry standards and regulations is good. We can integrate numerous reports, and the positive reporting feature is also highly commendable.

Veracode provides visibility into the application's status at every phase of development.

Veracode works very well overall, and our security has been greatly improved, significantly impacting our ability to fix flaws.

The security process has been improved. Before using Veracode, we used to perform it manually. However, at that time, there was no application that could be integrated with the code. Now, with Veracode, we can directly integrate it with our code. As a result, security checks are being done automatically, saving us 30 to 40 percent of our time.

What is most valuable?

Veracode offers various security features. Veracode performs the analysis using three different methods: static analysis, dynamic analysis, and software composition analysis. These security features are the best, and the most valuable features.

What needs improvement?

Veracode's ability to prevent vulnerable code from going into production is commendable. However, we have encountered numerous cases of false positives that need improvement.

The technical support service has room for improvement. There are times when we rely on them, but we are not receiving an adequate response.

The stability has room for improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veracode for one and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veracode is stable, but there is room for improvement.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veracode is highly scalable. We have not had any issues with scalability.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before I joined my organization, they used a third-party application to check code. Since I joined, we have been using Veracode.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was somewhat complex. The deployment took a couple of weeks because we needed to resolve numerous technical issues that we had to understand first. We had six people involved in the deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veracode's price is reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Veracode an eight out of ten. I recommend Veracode to others.

Veracode's false positives significantly impact our developers. When we encounter numerous false positive cases, we are required to conduct extensive reviews. How much it affects our developers depends on the number of false positive cases we are encountering and the significance of addressing them concerning the criticality of writing the code.

Veracode can save time in our DevSecOps process, but it may not significantly reduce costs.

Organizations that have security flaws in their code and seek to enhance their core security can consider Veracode as one of the best options for investment. Veracode is easy to implement and can effectively address the flaws in the code, provided that cost is not a significant concern.

Maintenance is required from time to time, specifically regarding false positives. We need to verify whether the system is functioning properly and communicate with the support team. The intervals for these checks occur after approximately 30 or 60 days, which we have selected, and we must strive to improve the system during these instances.

Veracode is deployed at two locations within our organization.

Great SAST, good DAST, and helps save a significant amount of time

  • July 31, 2023
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

My company is a financial and technical enterprise with involvement in healthcare as well. We use Veracode for scanning, utilizing both SAST and DAST approaches. The purpose of static testing is to assess our code for vulnerabilities before deployment. After completing this step and addressing any identified issues, we run dynamic application security testing on the applications we've created to ensure there are no vulnerabilities introduced after the build. These could be issues that arise during the execution of the code, rather than being inherent to the code itself.

Additionally, we are currently considering or in the process of transitioning to Veracode for a specific function known as Software Composition Analysis, which is among the services they offer.

In terms of my use cases, I oversee approximately 200 development teams managing around three to four hundred projects. About 30 percent of these projects are connected to Veracode. Moreover, I manage a user base of over 700 individuals, and many of our build pipelines include immediate SAST scanning during the building process.

We currently use Vericode Cloud, specifically the public cloud. At the moment, I am in the process of deploying two Veracode ISM management servers from their platform. These servers will be responsible for scanning our internal applications that are not exposed to the external world. One significant aspect is that our company decided to transition to the cloud approximately three years ago. Initially, we had 27 data centers scattered worldwide, but now we have reduced that number to five. By the end of this year, we plan to further decrease it to three, and eventually, we will likely have only one or two data centers in the future. However, there are certain things that we cannot migrate to the cloud.

How has it helped my organization?

Veracode's ability to prevent vulnerable code from being deployed into production is excellent. It is considered one of the best scanning tools available. We have conducted several comparisons between Veracode and other products in the market, and Veracode consistently ranks first among those we have tested.

With Veracode, the amount of vulnerable code that gets through is almost negligible. When we run a scan, we don't expect to find any significant vulnerabilities because the SAST usually catches almost everything.

Veracode's policy reporting for ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations is excellent. It is applicable to us as a multinational company with PCI and HIPAA requirements, and we also engage in government projects. Consequently, we are obliged to adhere to any relevant regulations, which is why we have implemented numerous policies that automatically alert us when any action might potentially violate the established guidelines.

Although Veracode can offer visibility into the application's status at every phase of development, we do not rely on manual penetration testing because we have our own testing team. Instead, we use SAST from the moment our developers start typing the code until the deployment phase.

The visibility has significantly expedited our DevSecOps process. Now that we've integrated Veracode and included it in our build pipelines, we can provide feedback on potential issues and vulnerabilities in their code much more quickly. Our team appreciates and is delighted with this improvement because, previously, we had to wait until the builds were completed, then run DAST and subsequently present them with ten pages of issues, which would take them ten to fifteen days to address. By adopting a left-shifting approach, we've moved the bar further to the left, reaching a point where we can hardly get closer than we are now while they are actively coding. The only way to provide them with even faster information about potential vulnerabilities in their code would be to offer feedback as they type and when they push the code to the main build. Unfortunately, as of now, there are no tools available that can accomplish this.

Veracode has been a great benefit because it allows developers to log in to their code and examine the specific vulnerabilities they were informed about. Typically, there is a description of why and how the vulnerability occurred, along with guidance on how to resolve it. Veracode significantly aids our organization in fixing flaws.

Veracode helps our developers save time. While I cannot provide a precise estimate of the actual time saved, I can explain that the more we shift the SAST to the left, meaning running it as soon as the developers enter their code, the more time we can save. This is because when developers have the code fresh in their minds, they have a better understanding of what they wrote and how to fix any vulnerabilities based on the provided descriptions. On the contrary, if we shift the SAST further to the right when the code is already completed and possibly being reviewed by a different developer, it will take more time for them to understand the original code and the vulnerability's context. Thus, the original developer could have fixed the vulnerability in a shorter period of time. Additionally, considering the learning curve for new developers down the line, it becomes even more crucial to have the original developer fix the vulnerability promptly. If we only run DAST without SAST, we might end up with a long list of ten thousand potential vulnerabilities, which would require weeks of work just to address them all sequentially from the start.

Veracode has had a significant impact on our organization's security posture. When I first arrived, we were only connected to about three different teams. Originally, we only had seven or eight teams. Now, we have almost two hundred teams. One of the most significant changes is that even with those seven or eight teams, only two or so were using Veracode. However, we gradually added more teams as they came on board. Subsequently, there was a major organizational change, and Teams were divided into smaller, more compact, and agile units, which is the new trend in the industry. As a result, the teams are now much smaller, more diverse, and more agile. We are now connected to 70 percent of the two hundred teams. We have expanded considerably, but there is still more to achieve. The efficiencies have improved significantly, and the developers are satisfied with this progress. This shift is excellent for security because we were usually known as the "no people," but now we are transforming into the "yes" and "let me help you with that" people.

Veracode has reduced the cost of our DevSecOps, just from the 25 percent time-saving. The most expensive factor is not computers or technology, but rather, it's people. If I were to add together all of the salaries of the individuals and compare the amount of time saved to the total salary cost, I could cover the expenses for my infrastructure twice over a year.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the SAST capability and its integration into the Veracode pipelines.

What needs improvement?

From what we have seen of Veracode's SCA offering, it is just average. The SBOM is adequate, but it's essentially the same as what everyone else is doing. In terms of SCA, they are about average compared to other systems. Therefore, I would like to see some improvements.

SAST, DAST, and SCA in a single pane of glass would be a good upgrade to Veracode.

We are a Jira and Confluence shop and I would like to have a really good integration with those tools.

We have a ticketing system that not too many companies have ever heard of. In fact, I had never heard of it before coming here. Instead of using a well-known industry standard like ServiceNow, we use a ticketing system called Cherwell, which also has an open API. Having an API for the ticketing system would be really beneficial.

I would prefer if Veracode offered more options for licensing, such as a pipeline or project license instead of a user license. Currently, I have around seven hundred users, but I manage fewer projects. Therefore, I believe it would be more beneficial and efficient for me if Veracode could adopt a project-based pricing model. In reality, I have multiple teams working on various projects simultaneously. Pricing based on the number of projects I have up and running would be more suitable for my needs compared to the number of developers working on a particular project.

One thing that I would like to be able to do is to receive a daily summary of the emails I currently receive. With numerous ongoing projects, constant scanning occurs, resulting in a high volume of emails about what is being processed. I believe it would be helpful if Veracode could create a daily summary of these emails. This way, I can easily track the number of actual emails I receive without having to go through each one individually. As of now, I already have 65 emails from Veracode, specifically regarding the processes that ran today.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veracode for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have almost never seen any downtime with Veracode.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is excellent because we utilize Veracode on their cloud infrastructure, and we handle dozens of projects daily.

How are customer service and support?

I've never had a problem that didn't get solved, or at the very least, get immediate feedback. So, I would say their technical support is very good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously utilized a solution provided by IBM in my previous organization, but later we transitioned to a company named WhiteHat Security. The reason for this switch was that when we conducted a scan using the IBM solution, it returned a result of ten thousand vulnerabilities. It was my responsibility to review the vulnerability report and clear out any false positives. However, this task was extremely time-consuming, taking nearly forty hours to complete. The reason behind the prolonged effort was the spidering scan performed by the IBM solution, which continually traversed different pages through various links, leading to repetitive errors that required matching and deduplication. Out of the ten thousand vulnerabilities, approximately a thousand were legitimate, and the scanning capability was limited to DAST. To address these challenges, we migrated to WhiteHat Security. With WhiteHat's scanning process, the number of vulnerabilities was reduced significantly to around six or seven hundred. Their approach outperformed my manual efforts in identifying duplicates and further eliminated non-duplicate vulnerabilities that were caused by the same piece of code.

When I joined my current company they were already using Veracode.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. We connected to the Veracode cloud, so essentially, we are operating on their public cloud. Whenever we run any process, we send our code to them. They execute it, and we receive feedback from the execution.

I have not been involved in the initial deployment of Veracode, but I have been involved in deploying the pipelines, creating and building out the ISMs, and also administering users. Recently, we moved and integrated it with our single sign-on. Since we're using Okta, we performed the integrations, and now everyone connects through Okta.

What about the implementation team?

We utilized a value-added reseller, and they provided integrators themselves. Additionally, we have direct connections with Veracode. So, my understanding is that we likely received assistance from both the value-added reseller's team and Veracode.

We have monthly calls with Veracode. I work directly with engineers and have access to their email addresses and telephone numbers. This way, whenever there's a problem or an issue, I can easily reach out to someone. Additionally, I receive almost daily emails regarding recent developments and occurrences.

What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on investment. We have two hundred teams, and approximately 70 percent of them are integrated with Veracode, running pipeline scans on about 50 percent of those. The remaining teams conduct manual SAST scans instead of using pipeline scans. We have likely saved 25 percent or more of the time it takes developers to go from a startup project to the final build and deployment, just by addressing vulnerabilities.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay based on the number of developers working on a particular project.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Our organization evaluated four or five different solutions before selecting Veracode. The issue with the others was that they only offered either SAST or DAST, but not both, whereas Veracode provides both.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Veracode an eight out of ten. Veracode needs to improve its SCA capabilities to become a market leader rather than a market follower. Another noteworthy area they are starting to focus on is container security. I assume they will compete with Laceworks and other companies in that domain, which makes it worth keeping an eye on.

Veracode's software build of materials feature is integrated into the software composition analysis, which we are currently exploring for utilization. However, at this time, we are using a third-party product for that purpose.

Veracode's false positive rate is very low based on what we have found. However, there are instances where it becomes confused, identifying one type of vulnerability when it is actually a different type that appears similar. Nevertheless, we always conduct verifications before approving a list of vulnerabilities for the developers to address. We thoroughly go through and verify at least most of the different types to ensure their validity. My team verifies the false positives, so the developers almost never see them. Because we don't encounter many false positives, we don't spend a lot of time fine-tuning policies. We'll make some minor adjustments, and it should mostly resolve the issue until we encounter a different type of false positive. Then, we'll have to address it separately.

One of the other things that I have observed recently is a tool called Veracode Fix. We have not examined it yet, but it's worth considering. Normally, we avoid implementing too many automated fixes because sometimes they end up causing even more issues, particularly when dealing with legacy code while transitioning to Veracode. Allowing automation could potentially lead to the application being permanently shut down, especially in cases like Software Composition Analysis and Software Bill of Materials where we may need to upgrade to a different or less vulnerable, open source piece of code. If we upgrade without ensuring compatibility with our existing setup, it could break numerous things. Hence, we previously attempted to use automated fixes, but the outcome was negative, and we have decided never to repeat that mistake. Therefore, it's something we plan to explore, but we need to ascertain if there have been any changes in that type of setup.

For someone who wants to use Veracode but is concerned about the cost, the amount of time saved, especially on the SAST side of things, makes it worthwhile.

We are a multi-cloud organization primarily using AWS, with 25 percent of our infrastructure on Azure and a smaller portion on Google Cloud. We are currently using Google services only because we are a Google shop rather than a Microsoft Office shop. As a result, all of our emails are managed through Google, and we rely on Google Docs and other related tools.

There are four architects and a group of DevSecOps professionals who work directly with the development and operations teams. They form the security component of the organization and are responsible for operating Veracode on a daily basis. Their primary role is to assist the developers in integrating Veracode into their workflows, setting up pipelines, and collaborating with them when vulnerabilities are identified. They are available to help the developers understand why they received a vulnerability and guide them on how to address and eliminate it.

The only maintenance we will have to deal with is related to the ISM servers. These ISM servers are actually controlled by our company. There is an on-prem link to the Veracode cloud. When they conduct their scan, they access the server, which acts as a jump box. This enables them to scan our internal applications that do not have direct access to the outside world.

Veracode is a good Dynamic Application Security Testing tool, but it excels as an outstanding Static Application Security Testing solution for organizations that prioritize serious security measures.

We're finding fewer and fewer issues through external security scanners or penetration testers

  • July 28, 2023
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Veracode is part of our overall security program. We use it to scan our daily build pipelines and all our fielded releases. The primary features we use are static application security testing and software composition analysis.

We analyze third-party libraries for known vulnerabilities and taking action. Veracode is also part of our release procedure. We put the artifacts from the record and attach them to the release documentation to provide our customers with those documents if needed.

How has it helped my organization?

Veracode has improved our product because we're gradually finding fewer and fewer issues through external security scanners or penetration testers. It plays an important role in the continuous integration quality assurance chain. We started using Veracode when it was supporting a 2017 standard. When the security standard changed to 2021, we received new issues.

We adjusted the policy and no longer have any medium-priority issues in our scan results. It has increased the quality of our security while enabling us to pass the two historical standards and maintain compliance. We have analyzed and cleaned up several thousand issues since we started using Veracode.

We use our internal policies for the WAF Security Standard, but it isn't an industry-wide policy. We do not use PCI DSS, etc., but it shouldn't be a problem to comply with that stuff. For example, PCI DSS isn't applicable to our case because we aren't managing any credit card data, working with medical devices, or doing anything involving the military. Some standards aren't applicable.

Veracode offers visibility into vulnerabilities at every step of the pipeline. Every night, we build source code and mark everything that was merged during the day. We check those reports once weekly and correct some issues that were detected. For software composition analysis, it's even easier because every time the record updates, Veracode sends emails to the security team. It also makes me aware of some newer capabilities in software composition and analysis.

It showed us a lot of flaws in various parts of our product and helped us visualize a lot of issues that we previously didn't know about. We had static code analysis, which is a bit different than Veracode. We were using a static code analyzer from Visual Studio, and it was mostly about development best practices. When we started using Veracode, we realized there were more problems that static analysis alone wasn't catching. It's an excellent tool for showing the vulnerabilities in your software.

It helps us save time and effort for a portion of our production. For example, if you're scheduling to release product improvements in the spring, you don't want to fix anything after it goes into production. From that perspective, fixing things before the code is released saves us time. It also protects our reputation because fewer issues enter production.

It sometimes saves our customers some time because they don't need to perform their own secret analysis because we've already analyzed the product and can provide them with the results much faster.

What is most valuable?

It's hard to say that any single feature is the most essential. There are many errors and vulnerabilities in software today in the standard libraries for different vendors because. We don't need to reinvent the wheel every time because we're using standard libraries, and it's important to know that your security isn't compromised because you use libraries with vulnerabilities.

We use Veracode as a quality gate. We do not do continuous delivery or continuous deployment. We're releasing about twice a year, so we use it as a quality gate in this situation. We should analyze various types of patch software. From my observations, it has been an excellent tool so far. We also have an external penetration testing effort, and the testers have not found any issues, so that tells us that Veracode has been successful at preventing issues from entering production.

I use the software bill of materials. Our product consists of many systems and components and redundancies that must be processed manually. We are in contact with the Veracode guys, and I think the next release will have this software bill of materials added. It isn't a problem with Veracode. It's a problem with the way we upload and build sources. In the implementation stage, we want the results as fast as possible, and we've done it in a way when we upload. It can be optimized when we upload it to Veracode.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes Veracode gives us results about small glitches in the necessary packages. For example, we recently found issues with Veracode's native libraries for .NET 6 that were fixed in the next versions of those libraries. But sometimes you do not know which version of the library particular components are using.

The downside of that is that one day, the solution found some issues in that library for the necessary package we spent. Another day, it found the same issues with another library. It will clearly state that this is the same stuff you've already analyzed. This creates some additional work, but it isn't significant. However, sometimes you see the same issue for two or three days in a row.

In our project, we use a lot of limited packages that link to another library, and there may be issues in those reference libraries. For example, one library might be referenced by several Google packages. When it shows you a vulnerability in one library, you will not see the issues in all libraries. We've discussed the issue with the Veracode team, and they investigate a way to fix this. Hopefully, it will not be an issue.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Veracode for several years. I've led our product toward Veracode standard certification.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Veracode support eight out of 10. We had to contact support several times in the early years about a licensing issue we faced. We had some false positives in the licensing report from Veracode, so we raised a ticket with the support team, and they resolved it relatively quickly. We have regular meetings with a dedicated representative from Veracode, but we also get help from our colleagues on staff. At the moment, I'm happy with their support. They provide us with the necessary level of quality.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used SonarQ, but it's somewhat different because it's a pure static code analysis tool. Veracode has a stronger focus on web security, and we produce a web-facing product, so that's important to us. SonarQ is strictly a static code analysis tool.

How was the initial setup?

Veracode's setup was pretty straightforward, but there were a few challenges integrating it with our continuous integration system because there are lots of components. We wanted our source code scanned daily, so we had to change our build process. It's a bit tricky getting it to work with various parts of our solution. Our product is too complex, and there are lots of applications and flavors.

We did it ourselves because we have sufficient expertise. We're still tuning up our build process and reports. They have comprehensive documentation. We had help from Veracode support, who answered our questions about integrating the solution with our software. It was mostly building and tuning a little to build our software in debug mode and deploy it back into our cloud.

What was our ROI?

We can measure our ROI in the amount of issues we discover and remedy. From a quality control perspective, a problem is more expensive if a customer reports it. If we take price into consideration, we've decreased the net cost of security because we're receiving fewer issues from our customers. You must also consider the reputational cost if the customer needs to implement the fix.

If we find the issue after the fact, we need to provide our customers with the fix, and that may require some additional processes on the customer side. However, it's hard to calculate how much money it saved us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are not using the licensing much because we have a strict internal licensing policy. We mostly avoid GPL licenses and their flavors. Managing the licenses can be tricky. Sometimes you add a library and build some functionality around it, so it may cause some problems to remove it from its source.

Cost is an issue at every stage because you need to evaluate what you're spending and what you expect from the project. You should use common sense and clearly understand the pros and cons. It's hard to say whether the solution is cheap or expensive because it depends on your company's needs. Some companies need Veracode for compliance requirements, and it doesn't matter how expensive it is. It's costly, but it's the best in the industry. You can get something that does the job but it's like a car. You might buy a clunker for a few hundred dollars or an Infiniti for a hundred thousand.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We tried another solution before we started using Veracode. I believe it was HCLAppscan.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veracode eight out of 10. You should evaluate at least two vendors based on the company's needs. A host of issues need to be addressed, and it's a significant task. Veracode shows you many issues, but you must develop processes to address them. It was impressive when we first scanned our sources and found a thousand, but we had to develop compliance policies to deal with them. My advice is to not make the policies too strict. For example, you can start with high-priority issues.

Reduces manual processes for us, saving significant time

  • July 20, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

The most important purpose of this platform is code security. We are able to scan our code and find security flaws.

How has it helped my organization?

Veracode has saved us a lot of time because we have been able to reduce manual processes. We are able to do most things automatically with the platform. It has saved us between 30 and 40 percent of our time.

What is most valuable?

The main feature, and one of the most important, is the static code analysis. We are able to complete an analysis of the security flaws with this platform. It's very good at helping us find and fix flaws.

The sandbox environment is also one of the features we are using as well as integration with our CICD pipeline, which is very useful. The product is pretty easy to understand, which is quite good.

The policy reporting for ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations also helps us a lot.

It gives us visibility into application status at every phase. We have definitely seen an improvement in that regard.

For how long have I used the solution?

I'm pretty new to this platform. I'm going with a trial right now and have been using it for about a month. We have spent most of our time analyzing the code.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is also very scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The support team could be more responsive, and the dependency of users on the support team is too high and should be reduced.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

This is the first such tool we are using.

How was the initial setup?

The initial deployment was not very complex. It took us around 15 days because we were trying to understand the policies and many other things. Our team has 15 people and everyone was involved in making some decisions regarding the solution.

We have only needed help with the product itself. That's what we have reached out to their team for. But there hasn't been any maintenance of the product for us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is a bit high. Although we are in a trial phase, if we are going to make the decision to purchase the software, the pricing is going to be high for us.

What other advice do I have?

We are able to justify the false positives because security flaws are one of the biggest things that Veracode's features help us with.

Overall, the product is good. It has made a very good impression. There are some flaws, as I have mentioned, but overall it looks very good, with the features I've mentioned. The impact on our security has been good. The main challenge for us will be the pricing, but if we ignore that factor, the impact has been very good and we would definitely implement Veracode.

I would suggest having a look at Veracode. Go for a trial of the system to see if Veracode is something that can help solve your problems. Pricing should be ignored because there are definitely some very specific features that help a lot.

By continuously scanning our applications, we can mitigate risks that may arise in some workflows

  • July 18, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Veracode helps scan applications for security purposes to ensure they are safe before deployment. The solution is continuously monitoring the security of our infrastructure and workflows. About five people use the solution across our organization.

How has it helped my organization?

Our security posture has improved since we implemented Veracode because our developers have a better understanding of the security risks that may arise due to some actions we take on various projects and tasks. We're more aware of how vulnerabilities can be introduced into our daily work.

Veracode has reduced the amount we spend to remedy security risks by about 60 percent. Security testing is much easier than before. The time needed to address vulnerabilities can affect the workflows and lead to late delivery of our services across customers. It has helped us to mitigate risks by effectively monitoring workflows. The conditional scanning procedures we previously used have been replaced by modern systematic algorithms.

Veracode saves time and costs because it's flexible in terms of an organization's data requirements. It can provide data intelligence from various work platforms and guidance on the best practices for security mitigation so we can safeguard our data in various work processes.

The solution enables us to establish a strategic policy management infrastructure to monitor the performance of each application periodically and report on the security performance. The dynamic analysis gives us feedback from time to time and performance metrics inside the program interface.

This platform is one of the most efficient and effective tools for upgrading applications to meet an organization's performance standards and policies. It helps us improve our development because sometimes the coding procedure might not reflect the latest threats.

What is most valuable?

Veracode's most valuable aspect is continuous integration. It helps us integrate with other applications so that it can monitor the security process. By continuously scanning our applications, we can mitigate risks that may arise in some workflows. It streamlines compliance, policy management, and reporting on various data analytics. We use it daily to gain insight into our work processes.

The solution is built into our SecOps program. It offers modern policy management, essential support, and analytics features. It's efficient with fast and powerful risk-mitigation tools.

What needs improvement?

I think Veracode could integrate some advanced technologies to better address new threats as they arise.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have used Veracode for about a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veracode has been a stable product. We've had some downtime, but it has performed well overall.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Veracode support a nine out of ten. Veracode's support team has always been helpful. When we contact them by phone or online chat, they respond quickly with a solution within the time frame established in our support contract.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Deploying Veracode was straightforward, and we had help from the vendor's support team. Our deployment team has six members, and the whole process took about three weeks.

After deployment, the product requires some maintenance. We sometimes face some networking challenges that require repairs, and we need to periodically update some tools.

What was our ROI?

Veracode is a good investment, and I can recommend it to anyone who is looking for the best security tester. I estimate that we saw a 60 percent ROI this year, and it continues.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veracode is a little costly. It's cost-effective for a large enterprise, but it may be too expensive for small businesses.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veracode an eight out of ten. I would recommend it to others who need to do testing for application performance or security and risk management.

Provides compliance reporting so we can identify issues without having to rely on complaints

  • July 18, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We have multiple verticals and products, and we use Veracode to perform static analysis on our hosted applications across all the platforms. We also perform static and software composition analysis on a couple of products.

Our offices are spread out across North America, South America, Europe, and Cyprus. We also have offices in Australia that use the solution. About 25 to 30 people use the solution regularly.

How has it helped my organization?

Veracode has greatly improved the security posture of our applications because we can identify and mitigate vulnerabilities that we couldn't have without the solution. Veracode provides compliance reporting so we can identify issues without having to rely on complaints. Veracode has been extremely effective at fixing flaws in our applications. We have multiple applications across multiple verticals

Veracode or any other solution like it doesn't prevent anything. The product provides insight into the vulnerabilities, but it's up to the end-user to mitigate that and move it into production. If we fail to remedy the issue and move the code into production, it isn't Veracode's failure. We can't judge the product based on whether it could do that. The product is doing what it should be doing.

In addition to dynamic and static analysis, we can perform software composition analysis, which involves going into the various libraries to retrieve details about that. We see a few false positives in Veracode but not many. It's negligible.

Veracode has saved our developers time by identifying and reporting flaws. The developers don't need to spend time checking the code by hand. It reduces the time spent on these tasks by about 10 to 20 percent.

What is most valuable?

I believe the static analysis is Veracode's best and most valuable feature. Software composition analysis is a feature that most people don't use, and we don't use SCA for most of our applications. However, this is an essential feature because it provides insight into the third-party libraries we use.

What needs improvement?

We have some constraints interacting with Veracode self-support. I'm not talking about their technical support. I'm talking about self-support. We sometimes have a hard time communicating with them.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Veracode for the last five or six years, but the company has used it for nearly 10.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Veracode is a highly stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I haven't had a scenario where we've had to scale it.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Veracode technical support nine out of 10. They are excellent. When we have problems, they provide a solution every time.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had been using a third-party service for vulnerability checking.

How was the initial setup?

The deployment is a little complex. There is a small learning curve, but it isn't too difficult. The installation isn't hard, but we need to configure the dynamic analysis where it connects to a hosted application and performs checks. We have to configure the console and set a schedule. It takes a couple of hours to configure a new application.

What was our ROI?

We have been able to mitigate lots of flaws and vulnerabilities, so Veracode has had a positive effect on our products. It's hard for me to quantify. Our company has a large footprint across Asia, North America, South America, and Europe.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veracode is fairly priced.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veracode eight out of 10. I would recommend Veracode to other users. However, I suggest doing a proof of concept before moving forward with any solution.

The CI/CD integration is valuable, prevents vulnerable code, and provides end-to-end visibility

  • July 17, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use Veracode for static code analysis scans for our clients.

Veracode is deployed both on the cloud and on-premises.

How has it helped my organization?

Veracode helps prevent vulnerable code from being deployed into production by identifying problematic code. It enables us to send a report to the application developer, allowing them to address the vulnerabilities based on their criticality level. The developers are given six months to address medium-level issues and three months for critical ones. If the criteria are not mapped with the higher critical alerts present in those applications, we can enforce the build field and proceed without deploying it into production.

Veracode has helped improve our customers' organizations through the scanning taskbar, which identifies vulnerabilities in code. We have worked with ten clients, all of whom used Veracode to identify vulnerable code early in the development stage and resolve the issues. Additionally, Veracode offers Greenlight ID, which developers can integrate into their development process, providing clarity during the development phase. Veracode can also generate reports that developers can resolve, facilitating the quick resolution of security concerns.

The policy reporting for ensuring compliance with industry standards is excellent. The report helps us maintain our compliance.

It offers visibility into the application's status at every phase of development, including static analysis, dynamic analysis, composition analysis, and manual penetration testing throughout the Software Development Life Cycle.

Visibility aids the DevSecOps process by offering a clear framework for all involved departments, including the steps for handling severities.

Veracode assists our clients in addressing flaws by simplifying the process. The security team can review the code, approve or reject it, and developers can utilize the reports to promptly rectify the flaws.

It assists developers in saving approximately 20 percent of their time, primarily in the static part, as they no longer need to review all the code. Regarding the dynamic part, Veracode scans all the URLs, eliminating the necessity for developers to use additional tools. For third-party dependencies, developers depend on the reports and the Greenlight ID plug-in to streamline their workflow and save time.

Our clients depend on Veracode to improve their security stance.

What is most valuable?

The CI/CD integration is the most valuable feature of Veracode. This feature is not present in other solutions.

What needs improvement?

The analytics dashboard is not user-friendly and can be improved to assist us with the application size and enable modifications, whether for static or dynamic scans. This is currently missing in Veracode.

Veracode needs to improve its integration with other tools.

We have requested an enhancement for Veracode because it does not support scanning the static and dynamic elements of code created by MuleSoft. Furthermore, it does not support these aspects for the new generation of applications and we have to use other tools.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veracode for over seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

If there is an issue, I am unable to access all the logs due to insufficient permissions, which causes delays.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veracode is scalable. To increase the scale, we simply need to increase the number of licenses.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team's response time is inadequate. Typically, they fail to provide assistance beyond the initial call due to the limited knowledge and inability of the first-level support to resolve issues effectively. I have been dealing with a single issue for three weeks without any resolution.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The vendor handles the deployment, and we simply need to install the ISM agents on our network. The deployment time depends on the size of the application. Large applications may take up to five days to scan, but on average, it takes one or two days.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing depends on the functionality each client desires. For example, one of our clients only wishes to scan two applications, so they pay for that specific service in addition to our organization's third-party access to their system.

What other advice do I have?

I give Veracode an eight out of ten.

20 to 30 percent of the false positive rates are vulnerabilities. Sometimes, almost 50 percent of the reports are false positives, which affects the time spent on tuning policies.

The false positives increase the amount of time our developers need to spend investigating the reports.

Veracode offers static analysis, dynamic analysis, and composition analysis all in one place.

We are a team of five individuals who assist in deploying and managing Veracode, along with handling other tasks.

Our client base varies depending on their budgets, but we serve a large number of organizations in the financial industry.

I recommend Veracode. The solution is on par with the others, and organizations can read the reviews and run some tests before making a purchase.

We are able to create more applications and code more, while worrying less about errors while coding

  • July 10, 2023
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

The main purpose of Veracode is to deliver secure code on time. We use it to test our application security, at the implementation stage to make sure that code is secure. We do static and dynamic testing, as well as penetration testing with Veracode. We also use it for security threat detection for our enterprise applications.

How has it helped my organization?

It empowers our developers to fix security issues and achieve desired outcomes. It's a very secure cloud platform and helps us monitor our web sources for any attack. We have been able to completely secure our enterprise software, which is on the cloud, with the solution. Overall, we have been able to reduce the risk factors for our enterprise software. Also, determining security threats to our application happens faster now with the help of Veracode. The benchmarking capabilities against industry standards and the compliance help us a lot.

Veracode also provides a lot of programming language support and different frameworks are available, which enables us to get things into production much more efficiently. Our SDLC has become much smoother and more secure with Veracode.

And it has definitely helped our developers save time. It helps them with future references because, if they write code one time with errors that Veracode finds, the next time they use that as a reference and don't repeat the mistake. In that way, in the continuous development process, a lot of time is saved. It saves us about 20 percent of our time.

We are able to create more applications now, and code more, while worrying less about errors while coding. Worrying about fixing the flaws in an application is completely taken care of by Veracode, so we are able to focus more on creating new code and developing new applications. Veracode has been a great platform for that particular purpose.

We have also found more security vulnerabilities in our code, which has helped us produce much better applications for our end-users. Most of the time, vulnerabilities go unnoticed by humans. Veracode helps us pinpoint the exact vulnerability, what it affects, and it helps us correct it for future reference.

What is most valuable?

One cool feature is the static code scan, which is very good.

Also, the dashboards and the threat insights it provides are very good. The dashboards are intuitive and pretty straightforward, but also pretty detailed.

We get good, actionable insights at each stage, including static, dynamic, and penetration analysis, and it reduces overhead for us.

It also has compliance monitoring and reporting capabilities that I like very much. The compliance reporting is a great feature because there are a lot of different frameworks and channels, and each unique channel has its individual compliance monitoring and policies. Veracode helps us prepare for all the different challenges.

What needs improvement?

The false positive rate is a gray area. The number of false positives could be reduced a lot. For each good result, we are getting somewhere around 15 to 20 false positives. We expect false positives, but if that ratio could be reduced to a single-digit number for the false positives, that would be much more helpful.

We are spending some manual effort and time on this because it happens sometimes, when we first scan code, that it says there is no threat. And the second time we scan it, it says there is a threat. Those kinds of positive responses make us do double work. If that was better, it would greatly improve our overall efficiency.

Apart from the false positives, I would like to see more plugins and integrations to make Veracode much more user-friendly for developers and users. Any IDE plugins would make our work faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

My experience with Veracode has been over 12 to 14 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall, because it is a cloud platform, stability is not a concern. It's quite stable. To be strict about things, the UI can be very slow. There is downtime now then, and I understand why it happens, but I would appreciate it if that happened less.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are not going to scale it right now. We have about 18 developers and five or six administrators using the solution, and I don't expect that will change for now. But you can purchase more licenses. It's definitely scalable in that sense.

We have it in a single location only and it is used across three or four development teams in our office.

How are customer service and support?

Veracode support is very knowledgeable and very prompt. The Veracode community is also available, which is very good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

It's only deployed on the cloud. Although I was not a part of the initial deployment, I know for a fact that the deployment can take a long time.

As for maintenance, there are software updates, but apart from downloading the software updates, there isn't any other maintenance required on our side. It's a cloud platform so it self-maintains.

What was our ROI?

Our ROI is that we have seen a tremendous increase in the overall security of our enterprise software. It has helped us engage better with our clients and our retention rate has increased about 7 percent. We can't pinpoint that directly to using Veracode, but since we started using it we have seen this retention increase.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is fair. We are planning to renew for the next year.

It's definitely value for money. I would tell someone who is looking at Veracode not to be concerned about the pricing because the value that they will get, for this price, in the market, is very good when it comes to their long-term plans.

What other advice do I have?

If a proof of concept is possible, I would ask you to try it out first to get a sense of what Veracode is before investing. But investing in this tool is very much needed. With security threats, for long-term purposes, the code-level threat detection and code-level error detection are very much needed by any organization.
