Offers adaptability to modern technologies, training and good support

What is our primary use case?

All of our application services, application databases, and web services run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Everything is on there.  

How has it helped my organization?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is certainly more secure than AIX, which is what we had. It's also better than Solaris. It has improved from that perspective. We can handle the vulnerabilities better. It's more secure.

Other than that, some of the products that we are using, we are migrating out of very costly license items. For example, we're using Fusion because we wanted to migrate, and then we started using Vision Manager. We did a POC a few years ago. We started using PAM because we wanted an engine in our workflow management system from that perspective. 

We are still exploring a lot of items, but it's been a decent journey. It has helped to set up modern technologies.

What is most valuable?

We use a lot of Red Hat products. We use Red Hat PAM, Red Hat Session Manager, and the operating system. 

We use the operating system the most because all our servers are on it.

The support is good. Red Hat provides use with a degree of training.

What needs improvement?

The adoption was slightly slow because the knowledge in the market is slightly less available. It's hard to find resources to actually support the product.

Some kind of training that can upskill the resource into this technology could certainly help.

For how long have I used the solution?

I started using Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 6 in 2019. We have our own data center.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used different solutions. We moved from AIX 7.1 to RHEL 6. Then we moved to 7. Now we're going to 8.

We chose Red Hat Enterprise Linux because we wanted to adopt newer technologies and we wanted to secure our systems. Red Hat Enterprise Linux was a good available option. 

How was the initial setup?

It's on-prem right now. The deployment was straightforward. 

I manage the infrastructure team so all of these things are under my purview. 

We did hit some hiccups, but then RHEL's emergency support was available, and we were able to resolve it. 

What about the implementation team?

We have an engineering team that analyzes different products. During the analysis phase, we look for all vulnerabilities.

Once it passes all of those things, it becomes available in our internal protocol. We have different names where it becomes available in our source space to get deployed.

Migrations and upgrades have been straightforward. For example, OpenSSL has different versions that are not supported on RHEL 7, which we have right now. There is a version that comes built-in. 

We faced some issues, but we worked it out with Red Hat. They gave us a patch. 

We're moving to RHEL 8 now. We moved to RHEL 7 last year; we're going to RHEL 8 now. Next year, in 2024, we plan to move to RHEL 8.

What was our ROI?

We saw a return on investment. It is helping the business. 

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is competitive. It's not low, but it is in the market. 

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution a nine out of ten.

What is our primary use case?

We use Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers and Satellite for patch management. We're also using Ansible for automation and hardening. Additionally, I'm doing a migration project from RHEL 7 to RHEL 9. Our environment is a mixture of on-prem and cloud systems. We are a hospital, so we can't keep some information on the cloud for compliance reasons. 

We have a separate team for the hybrid, and I'm part of that team. We've been migrating a few servers from on-prem to the cloud. Everything used to be on a hardware server, but now we use the cloud for the storage network. We share workloads between the cloud and the physical data center. Our Rubrik data backup archives to the cloud with Microsoft Azure. We also partner with Pure Storage, which we use for on-prem storage.

We have physical Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers for the Splunk environment, which is the security solution we use. Hadoop went to the cloud, but it used to be on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. We have VMware, and our VMs are reserved for Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

How has it helped my organization?

We have been using Red Hat since I was hired. All the app owners want Red Hat. Red Hat Enterprise Linux supports SQL and Oracle databases, which is helpful.

What is most valuable?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux has made significant improvements in terms of storage. You can mount an 18 terabyte file system. It also supports NFS shares and the SIP share for the photos. There have been many features added since RHEL 6. It's more user-friendly and graphical. 

We use Ansible as a go-to for provisioning and hardening the servers. It's so much easier with Ansible because we used scripts in the past. We had to log into each server as such, and it took a long time. With Ansible, we just run one playbook, and it takes care of everything. 

I used Leapp for my upgrade from RHEL 7 to 8. It's an excellent utility tool. When I run the Leapp script, it tells me everything I need to take care of before I run a migration. Red Hat Insight is good because it tells you about the future patches available. 

We use Red Hat Enterprise Linux image builder. Our golden image is a real image. We harden it, and it's our golden server. When we need a new VM, we can just make a snapshot of that. If it's a physical server, then I have to do it manually.

What needs improvement?

AIX will be out of support in the next few years, so that is a problem because a lot of the clinical apps use AIX. 

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Red Hat Enterprise Linux since I started working at this hospital six years ago.  

How are customer service and support?

I rate Red Hat support eight out of 10. It's helpful when we face hardware issues, kernel panics, or the server is hanging. We always open a support case with Red Hat, and they're helpful at every level. It used to be in the United States, but now they outsource everything to India, so there is a big time difference. That's the only issue. 

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have always used Red Hat, but they use CentOS for a few applications. Most are using Red Hat. Another team uses Microsoft Windows 2016. It's a different team. The application team decides which one they prefer, but most clinicians use Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers.

The application owners like Red Hat instead of CentOS or another flavor of Linux because the support is reliable. If something breaks, they can call Red Hat support. It's the enterprise standard Linux.

How was the initial setup?

I do the Red Hat Enterprise Linux upgrades. It's straightforward because I can just run Leapp to upgrade it

What other advice do I have?

I rate Red Hat Enterprise Linux nine out of 10.

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for Red Hat Enterprise Linux is to set up and manage servers for various application teams, especially those dealing with hospital ADT applications. These applications handle critical data related to patient admissions and management within healthcare facilities. 

While configuring Red Hat Enterprise Linux and its associated tools can be complex and sometimes frustrating, I have found that leveraging the support and resources provided by Red Hat is invaluable. Through collaboration with Red Hat's support team and a better understanding of the intricacies involved, we have significantly improved the speed and efficiency of managing our extensive infrastructure, making the process smoother and more manageable than before.

How has it helped my organization?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux has improved our system's security. 

While measuring uptime is important, what matters most to us is improving the value and efficiency of patch and reboot cycles. Red Hat Enterprise Linux's tools, including Satellite and Ansible, provide valuable visibility and transparency regarding vulnerabilities, packages, and infected systems, helping enhance security and patch management.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the Ansible Automation Platform, closely followed by Satellite. These two tools are integral to our environment. 

Satellite helps with provisioning, managing metadata, and licensing, while Ansible ensures uniform setup across our extensive environment, making the management of our infrastructure much smoother and more efficient.

What needs improvement?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux could be improved in several ways, especially regarding transparency and communication of new features. Enhancements could include better documentation and quick reference materials for various user groups, including developers, system administrators, etc. 

Additionally, there could be improved visibility for new and improved commands within Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Many users still rely on outdated commands when newer, more efficient alternatives are available. Providing frequent updates and maintenance for resources like the admin blog would help improve communication and transparency regarding Red Hat Enterprise Linux's capabilities and features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Red Hat Enterprise Linux for 11 years.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate the support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux an eight out of ten. There has been a noticeable improvement in their support, particularly after their acquisition by IBM.

How was the initial setup?

The deployment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux was initially complex because we were not aware of all the available tools to streamline the process. We had to learn, but now we are more proficient. 

Tasks that once took a month can now be completed in a week. We worked directly with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, without an integrated reseller or consultant.

What was our ROI?

We have seen a return on investment with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. By transitioning applications to the Red Hat Linux platform, we have been able to reduce our data center footprint and associated costs, such as electricity. This cost savings in other areas has been a clear benefit of using Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

What other advice do I have?

Our upgrade and migration plans are focused on a balance between stability and staying current with the latest and most secure versions of Red Hat. 

While there is a desire to be on the cutting edge, we must consider what is currently in use by our clinicians and staff who rely on our hospital systems. We aim to strike a balance between these factors and leverage a sandbox environment to test the latest versions before deploying them in our production environment. 

We have been thoroughly impressed with Red Hat Insights and are currently in the process of exploring Leapp, which has shown great results in our evaluations. The web console has been invaluable for us, particularly when collaborating with application custodians who may not be familiar with the command line interface. 

We use Ansible for managing our Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems for provisioning and patching, which has improved visibility and reduced issues compared to third-party solutions. Overall, I would rate Red Hat Enterprise Linux as a nine out of ten.

How has it helped my organization?

The SAP solution subscriptions have made things a lot easier because it's a standard build. 

The solutions were premium and standard, which were not the same. They've combined those into just one standard version. Only the support hours are different. That is fantastic for us. It makes life easier.

For the standard subscriptions, in the past, updating the OS could increase your downtime. With the production ones, it did not. It got our non-production and production out of sync. Now, they've combined that all into one. It's just the support hours that are different. They're fantastic.

What is most valuable?

We use the SAP solution subscriptions only for SAP, which are great. 

We also use Ansible. Ansible is a wonderful tool for automation. We use it to automate our patching. We use Ansible to get playbooks to take care of anything that's manual.

We were able to achieve our security standard certifications.

What needs improvement?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux has affected our HA systems in a negative way. We're working through some of those issues.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 came up with a new feature that's like a MOM API in our cluster. It goes out into the AWS side and it needs to be adjusted. It does a retry that causes a cluster to failover pretty quickly, so we turned that feature off. That's something that could be improved. 

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Red Hat Enterprise Linux for a long time. It has been at least 10 to 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

 

How are customer service and support?

Support has been great. We get the right people for what we need.

How was the initial setup?

The patching has been good, but we scan with Qualys all the time. It comes up with thousands of EIDs all the time, but putting on the patches seems to resolve that.

We're operating right now from 7.9 to 8.6. We have to go with the supported versions. We did qualify for RHEL 9. 

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We used Unix in the past. We did have to come up with the SAP side. It was always Unix.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Has strong security features, and excellent compatibility for enterprise environments

What is our primary use case?

We are currently in the midst of a POC phase with a standalone cluster. This cluster consists of both coordinator and worker nodes, with a metadata store for storing various metadata. The entire setup is deployed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, and we have established a connection to the OpenShift UI.

What is most valuable?

While using it, we encountered far fewer complexities, and the entire process is much smoother and streamlined. For patching purposes, we simply need to communicate with our system administrator. They take care of the patching process, so we don't have to get involved and we can easily connect to the artifact repository and download the necessary artifacts to install in our system. 

We have a set of JSON files containing YAML configurations where all the required image details are documented and this setup makes it very straightforward for us.As for the Web Console, if you're talking about the user interface for tasks like creating ports, deploying applications, managing secrets, and other functions, I haven't encountered any significant issues. 

The process is generally straightforward and quick, taking just a few minutes. OpenShift offers two types of interfaces: one where you can edit YAML files for more advanced customization, and the other where you can use forms for faster deployment, though with fewer features.

What needs improvement?

Continuous improvement is essential to enhance user experiences and address evolving needs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with it for approximately six months.

How are customer service and support?

Our experience with its customer support is very good. Whenever we encounter any issues, we receive prompt and comprehensive assistance. There's no need to wait or take any additional steps to get the help we require, which is highly appreciated. I would rate it nine out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

In the past, our work primarily involved Hadoop, and we also dealt with Solid Cloud for security and other purposes, but we found that this setup was slow and not open source. On the other hand, the DLP solution we're currently using is not only cost-effective but also significantly faster. 

I also used a Linux browser, specifically the KCL browser which required me to go through the process of installing packages and various components, while in the current setup, everything is seamlessly connected. We simply use the OC command with a private key to connect to OpenShift. There are no extra or additional steps required, making the whole process exceptionally fast and efficient. It's quite remarkable and makes the workflow truly hassle-free.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy.

What about the implementation team?

The deployment process is straightforward. I simply had to deploy the images using OC commands, and the process of connecting to OpenShift was remarkably fast and smooth.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate it nine out of ten.

I like the speed of the OS data and the ease of Ansible automation

What is our primary use case?

We use Red Hat Enterprise Linux to run quite a few pieces of software. It's mostly for jPOS, but we also run some Apache solutions and some security applications.

How has it helped my organization?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux has streamlined a lot of the support issues. When we've had problems, Red Hat has been proactive about solving the problem with us. Support is always an issue with open-source platforms. By providing this support, Red Hat makes it much easier to adopt Linux.  

I love Red Hat Enterprise Linux's built-in security. You can see who is trying to do what and who isn't allowed. You get an alert for that. We also use a product from Symantec on the Linux system for real-time threat detection, but I think we probably don't need that. Red Hat already has these capabilities, but the security team needs something they can centrally manage. They need to know whether the system is protected and the agent is running. 

We use it on VMware, and we have a multi-site deployment, so it's very easy to patch and keep the servers up. We use Ansible automation for patching, which has really helped with the service uptime.

What is most valuable?

I like the speed of the OS data and the ease of Ansible automation. I don't need to spend much time managing everything. The provisioning and patching using Ansible is seamless. Ansible automation gives you almost a cloud-like capability on-premise. Most of my group doesn't have cloud skills. I learned it on my own and got my Kubernetes certification. I'm familiar with the automation infrastructure, how to build the execution environment and implement the private automation hub. Others still need training.

I've used Red Hat Enterprise Linux Image Builder for testing and development, but I haven't put it into production. We have a VMware template, and we've been doing training on VMware, but we are not there yet. I think they might move from VMware to another product. They are looking at other options, such as OpenShift, but we don't have training for OpenShift yet. They should try to have a salesman come and get OpenShift training for customers. If they make training free for the customers, more would switch to OpenShift from VMware.

What needs improvement?

I use Linux on Satellite with Ansible infrastructure. It would be great if there were a universal interface to control Red Hat Enterprise Linux's policy from Satellite. It could be a dashboard showing which policies were enabled on what system and allow you to apply them from the dashboard. 

I think Red Hat training could be cheaper. A company can move fast technologically with enough training. They will be stagnant without training and remain unable to fully leverage the technology. I have been encouraging the group to get a subscription to the training course for five years, but we haven't been able to take advantage of it because of the cost. They should make it cheaper for clients and offer big discounts at scale. 

When people lacked training for the technology we use, we migrated away from it. I worry that if we don't have enough training available to the client, they will eventually migrate away from Red Hat. More affordable training on key technologies like Satellite and Ansible automation will help us retain customers on those products. Downstream it will help them migrate to the latest and greatest Red Hat Enterprise Linux, as well.

I have used Red Hat Enterprise Linux since 2005.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Red Hat support 10 out of 10. I've been very impressed with the knowledge base and the support from Red Hat. When I create a ticket, they respond and resolve the issue quickly or they point us to the correct resources. For example, we had an NFS issue with ISO, so they helped us with the mounting options. We also had an issue with IBM AIX and Red Hat integration. Red Hat referred us to the IBM support stack, and we were able to get IBM to help us out.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Initially, I used Solaris because I liked it the best, but Red Hat Enterprise Linux has improved so much that it has overtaken Solaris. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is easier to use and has better documentation. I also like having the ability to use Satellite and Ansible automation to manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux. 

How was the initial setup?

The deployment is straightforward because we use Ansible automation to spin up a new system and install applications directly from the Ansible workflow. We were planning to have Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 online last year, but Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 came out, so we decided to wait for a bit, and we're almost ready to upgrade to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.  The application folks still haven't had enough time and money to migrate everything over, and we need a project manager. 

What other advice do I have?

I rate Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 out of 10. It comes with all of these nice tools like the Satellite automation web console.

Efficiently separates databases from applications and 90% of operations are successfully running on Red Hat

What is our primary use case?

We use it for databases and applications. In the new model, we keep databases separate from applications. Currently, about 90% of our operations are running in Red Hat 8. Some systems are still on Red Hat 7, but those will be migrated off by the beginning of next year.

How has it helped my organization?

It's been great since we have it. It's been reliable and fast. We keep all the security agents, and we've been taken care of right away, and that's the improvement in our company. It's with the new RHEL. There's always something new, something good that works for us. 

Moreover, we might need to move workloads from the cloud in the US to China in the future.

What is most valuable?

As we're migrating and doing the Elite upgrade, which is an in-place upgrade, we find it great. We use it for databases, and we're testing it for applications. Some applications don't work, but some are functioning well. So far, it's been a positive experience.

Since I'm more focused on migrating, Leapp is awesome. We are able to do something that will work the way it's working.  There are no issues or breaks.

RHEL's knowledge base is great. It's very good. Especially when you try to open a case, it gives you all the options you need, so you don't have to wait for the case to be opened. You can get all the information you need right there.

Moreover, I am in the process of testing Leapp and Red Hat Insights. And then create our images from there rather than create MIs.

For how long have I used the solution?

At the new company, we've been using it for three years. At my previous company,  we used it for over five years. Personally, I have been using it for almost eight to ten years.

How are customer service and support?

We often have to go through people who have the same labels as us and who have the same knowledge base articles as us, which takes time. But they do it first; it's searching the knowledge way that I search. That I can do. That takes the time before. They do the payment. They sent me exactly what I had already found. And then we can go to the next level. That is taking a little bit more time that we can be a little bit better. So, the initial step of the support process could be improved. 

90% of people who open those bases are administrators who already look on the Internet for all these knowledge bases. So by the time we get there, we're gonna get the knowledge base back. And that's not helpful.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used to use HPUX and Solaris. We switched to RHEL because HPUX started looking like it was going away, so we started moving to Red Hat. We thought it was our best option. We tested different flavors of RHEL.

When it comes to provisioning and patching, we have a satellite server. We use a lot of Ansible. We are getting used to Ansible and Satellite servers. 

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup wasn't complex, but since we wanted to make it easier to use, it became harder to make it work the way we wanted. Not out of the box, so we can just build a server that is ready to be deployed right away without any more interventions.

We use RHEL with AWS because it's easier for us to maintain since we create our own AMIs and we update that as we need it. So we don't need to follow their schedule until we get it more secure and more reliable for us.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution a ten out of ten.

Helps to create clusters but needs to incorporate a feature similiar to GNOME system monitor

What is our primary use case?

We use Red Hate Enterprise Linux in our infrastructure, which consists of VM and Linux. We use it to create clusters. 

What needs improvement?

I would like to see the GNOME system monitor feature, which shows CPU usage and other aspects. It will help to save time. 

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Red Hate Enterprise Linux for eight years. 

How are customer service and support?

We have a separate team that handles any issues. We inform them whenever we encounter issues. 

What other advice do I have?

I would like to see user training sessions that last about one to two hours on new features and releases. 

We have a separate team that creates dashboards for us. I rate the product a seven out of ten.

Our use case for Red Hat Enterprise Linux is for production applications. 

How has it helped my organization?

We are a Managed Service Provider. Red Hat Enterprise Linux enables us not to be worried about vulnerabilities, security, and patching.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the subscriptions and upgrades. 

What needs improvement?

We need to have more flexibility on the developed versions. Not everybody is ready to subscribe to enterprise versions. They would like to test the tool without subscriptions. 

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We chose Red Hat Enterprise Linux because of its security. 

What other advice do I have?

We use Red Hat Enterprise Linux with AWS. We started our practice with AWS, and most customers use it instead of GCP or Azure. We use the product in a hybrid environment, mostly when shifting the containers or existing workloads from legacy systems. 

Most of the customers use Red Hat Enterprise Linux because it is the only approved OS. The tool's knowledge base is good but is limited to subscriptions. 

The upgrade migration is straightforward. For the initial projects, we used to execute CLI scripts. We plan to upgrade the system if everything works well in the lower environment. 

I have used the image builder feature. I rate the overall product a nine out of ten.

What is our primary use case?

We use Red Hat Enterprise Linux for VMs and physical servers. 

How has it helped my organization?

The containerized platform will help us use ROSA. 

What is most valuable?

The tool's most valuable feature is OpenShift. We plan to move all our applications to microservices. The container platform is integrated into one.

How are customer service and support?

I opened a few cases, and the tool's support responded quickly.

How was the initial setup?

Deployment is simple if you have been using the solution for a long time. However, it can be complex if you are new to it. 

What other advice do I have?

We use RHEL 7 and RHEL 8 on on-premises. RHEL 8 is on the AWS. There is a security policy like CIS when deploying the solution. You can embed it on the image. I am not sure if there is HIPAA compliance yet. 

Migration from RHEL 8 to RHEL 9 is easy. Upgrade depends on the application that is running on each instance. You need to check if it is compatible with the kernel. We need to plan things before migrating to the latest version. We need to stay current to ensure compliance. We plan to move from RHEL 7 to RHEL 9 and use RHEL 8 and RHEL 9. 

We use Red Hat insights but do not utilize them. It helps with the remediation. I use Image Builder to build AWS and GCP images. I haven't deployed them. 

I rate the product a nine out of ten.
