Provides data cataloging and lineage with metadata management but lacks integration

  • June 11, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for data cataloging and lineage.

What is most valuable?

The valuable feature is metadata management. If you want to trace sensitive data, you can auto-classify them. You can search for sensitive information through EDC. Using Discovery, you can identify if there is any type of data set.

What needs improvement?

EDC is only used for cataloging and meetings. Currently, not many different databases are integrated with it. The ETL logic should be visible within the tool. If EDC is integrated with Axon, you will see the data lineage and catalog because of EDC. If EDC is removed, you cannot see any lineage or catalog.

We need EDC on the application level. Currently, it is only at a system level. It can be shown as an application layer between policies or regulations. This kind of feature can be enabled.

The integration with other data management tools can be enhanced. For instance, there is no integration with tools like Collibra or Hubview.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog for seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

EDC needs many ports to run. Therefore, to improve performance, you need to increase the number of cores.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy and takes two weeks to complete. One person is enough to deploy it.

What was our ROI?

EDC gives you a better understanding of architecture and the system used. You cannot use EDC completely unless you have access.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

EDC is a standalone application, so it doesn’t really make much sense. It doesn’t give you a lot of features that way; it’s primarily for cataloging and classification. Nobody would buy EDC as a standalone application. When people are buying EDC, it’s always with Axon.

I recommend buying the solution altogether with Axon.

Overall, I rate the solution as seven out of ten.

Secure and easy to use, but the support is not good, and the user interface must be more functionality-aligned

  • May 20, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the tool to implement customer, product, and entity masters. We also use TDM to generate synthetic data, but not in real-time scenarios.

What is most valuable?

It's a multi-domain master data management system. The solution is easier to use compared to the other solutions. The security is good. The governance model is good. All the elements that I expect are available in the product.

What needs improvement?

The user interface can be a bit more functionality-aligned.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for the last 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The support team does not provide much support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Negative

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was okay. I rate the ease of setup a five out of ten. The tool can be deployed in a minimum of eight to ten months. The implementation requires at least a team of five members. Maintenance depends on the customer's requirements. If the customer's requirements keep changing, we need a team to maintain the tool. Otherwise, one or two Informatica developers are sufficient to maintain the product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is comparable.

What other advice do I have?

All the tools have similar capabilities. There is nothing superior in Informatica. I'm a software integrator. I work for an IT company. I'm not the consumer. I will recommend the product to others, but it depends on the customers’ needs.

If an organization needs a good customer master, product master, or partner master, Informatica MDM will be a good choice. The solution has been in the industry for quite a long time. It has all the elements I look for in a master data management system except for customer support. All other things are fine.

Overall, I rate the solution a seven and a half out of ten.

Offers favorable data warehousing features but needs to improve UI

  • March 26, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What needs improvement?

You have to deal with a minimum of five, even if you want to go and check only a particular logic, making it an area with issues where improvements are required.

Certain shortcomings in the product's UI make it an area where improvements are required. The tool should provide ease of use and flexibility.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Informatica Cloud Data Integration for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a five out of ten.

I see that my company faces frequent challenges in the tool when it comes to the area of UI and related to the area of characters. In my company, we have experienced some issues that occur when upgrading the tool.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Enterprise-sized customers can choose Informatica Cloud Data Integration.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support for the solution is helpful, but it takes them time to figure out the issue. The time taken to close the ticket depends on the support that Informatica gets from their backend technical team. It takes a long time to close a ticket. I rate the technical support a seven out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase was not difficult.

The product's deployment phase can be carried out by linking a .exe file provided by the solution with your server.

The solution is deployed on the cloud.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Against Informatica Cloud Data Integration, I recommend SnapLogic, which is a cheaply priced product. People know about SnapLogic, as it comes with very good features and ease of use.

What other advice do I have?

The feature of the product that I find the most beneficial for data warehousing tasks is the use of the tool for extracting and loading purposes, which depends upon the connector's availability. Many connectors in Informatica are not free or out of the box, and you have to purchase them. The tool has quality connectors.

I haven't used the tool for real-time data analytics, but I have used it in my company for batch-oriented purposes. Data integration will not be supported in real-time in Informatica Cloud Data Integration. For real-time data integration, you have to go with either the application integration or other products like Informatica PowerExchange.

In Informatica Cloud Data Integration, the transformation feature was almost the same as that of Informatica PowerCenter. In Informatica Cloud Data Integration, the transformation features may offer a couple of more functionalities.

In terms of the ease of learning that the product provides, I would say that those who have experience with Informatica PowerCenter can easily adopt Informatica Cloud Data Integration. A person who has worked on Informatica Cloud Data Integration may not be comfortable with Informatica PowerCenter. In terms of ease of use, I consider Informatica PowerCenter to be easier than Informatica Cloud Data Integration.

I rate the ease of use experience attached to the tool a six out of ten.

Only after considering the use cases of people can I recommend the product to them. If a person only wants a product for extraction and loading purposes, then I feel that there are many cheap products in the market that can satisfy their needs. Suppose someone is looking at a tool that offers widespread features, like application integration and real-time functionalities. In that case, all of it comes under Informatica, which can be a good option.

The tool is the most expensive one compared to any of the other products in the market, especially in terms of ETL functionalities or integration features.

My company has integrated SAP, many databases, and APIs into Informatica Cloud Data Integration.

I can see that the performance of the product keeps improving with every new release, especially in the area of job executions, even though the hardware may be the same.

I rate the tool a seven out of ten.

Improves data quality and has a good interface, but the integration process is not easy

  • February 20, 2024
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution for preparing the data according to the data quality rules.

What is most valuable?

The mapping and mapplet features are valuable. The product improves data quality. The processes are running smoothly. The interface is good. Data integration is easy.

What needs improvement?

I use the solution to integrate on-premise and cloud products. There are issues with connectors to cloud applications. The integration process is not easy. The customer experience must be improved. When we implemented it, we did it with the help of Informatica professionals. I would not recommend them as an implementer. They didn't have any experience. It was very hard. The customer experience was not good. It's hard to understand the new features of the HR list. The tool must have more options for connectors. It is hard to connect to some of the applications. The remediation process is not straightforward.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for one and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s scalability a six out of ten. It is a bit complex to scale. We have 20 users.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is not good. The support team must improve the quality of support.

How was the initial setup?

The product is cloud-based.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We got a 50% discount.

What other advice do I have?

We couldn’t deliver the full project. I will not recommend the product to others. Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

A scalable tool that needs a lot of maintenance due to its unstable nature

  • January 15, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution in my company for data ingestion and the ETL process. Though in our company, we started to use the product for data cataloging, we still use it for ETL and data integration.

What is most valuable?

Informatica Enterprise Data Lake is a product that was recommended to our company after we got in touch with various product vendors, and all of them suggested that Informatica is the best in the market, especially as per Gartner's report. A lot of reports were available for the product around five or six years ago, which was before our company decided to use Informatica Enterprise Data Lake. Informatica Enterprise Data Lake is probably the right fit for our infrastructure.

What needs improvement?

Governance, data dictionary, and data cataloging are not available in Informatica Enterprise Data Lake. A lot of businesses are facing issues related to understanding the area revolving around insights of data.

At Informatica Enterprise Data Lake's level, in our company, we have a lot of redundant data in a lot of our core systems. The basic thing that our company wants is for the product to develop a reporting layer and access data from the document layer so that we can avoid duplication in projects, databases, and data.

There is a lot of maintenance to be done owing to the instability users may face every time because of the huge processing capacity as the company has around more than 50 nodes, which causes a lot of maintenance issues because of which a lot of people don't benefit from the platform as it functions in a slow manner.

Informatica Enterprise Data Lake's setup process was complex since it doesn't support a lot of real-time systems. Every time, we have to find different tools we can use in our company with the solution since it doesn't support many real-time systems. Even if our company invests in some tools, Informatica Enterprise Data Lake creates too many small files with some issues, which we cannot read because we invested in HBase and Kudu, but performance-wise, the process is slow.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Informatica Enterprise Data Lake for four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The area revolving around the stability of the product depends on how we have set up the clusters in our company. In our company, if we consider high availability tools for every service, we distribute services according to multiple racks and nodes, meaning we self-structure them to fix the issues.

Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. If you want to expand the tool, it's not a big task, but there is a need to procure the hardware and space in Cloudera, where our has stored Informatica Enterprise Data Lake. The process of using the tool's scalability option is well documented.

Scalability-wise, I rate the solution an eight to nine out of ten.
Considering so many dashboards built into the product, more than 100 users of the solution. The tool's reporting layer is also used in our company.

How are customer service and support?

I have experience with the solution's technical support. The solution provided by the support team for the product is fine, but there is some time delay when it comes to certain issues. The support takes time to review the logs and get a solution, meaning the support is able to resolve the issues even though it takes time.

I rate the technical support a six to seven out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

My company uses Informatica EDC for cataloging along with Informatica Analyst.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

What about the implementation team?

The product's deployment phase was carried out with the help of some professional services, but it was not with the help of a third-party professional service. My company could manage migrations and upgrades with our own in-house support team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licenses attached to the solution are highly priced. Informatica has licensing models for every product and for every feature, like the web service feature, which is something my company doesn't like. When our company buys a product, it should come with all these features. I would give the product a low rating in the area of pricing.

What other advice do I have?

I rate the overall tool a seven out of ten.

Offers good stability, helpful in integration but maintenance is time-consuming

  • November 20, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

It is used for our SharePoint data, and it is used for our financial data, so we prepare some kind of data lakes about data. And for a lot of financial things. For example, when somebody has to put the user, like, what we have in your organization. You have a user, and some joint venture partners are there. So, we use it for multiple financial master data. Basically, financial master data, we use it.

How has it helped my organization?

We are basically partners, IT partners because a lot of data is being used in multiple applications for Informatica. So, basically, we have partners. It's like Shell. So, it's an end user, but as well as a partner.

What is most valuable?

It's helpful in integration, and it can be moved around in SharePoint. So, from the SharePoint View, data integration and reporting, it help a lot in that way.

What needs improvement?

The speed with which the data should be moved could be improved because of the firewall. It's becoming quite slow. And the integration with Teams or with Microsoft is not so smooth. So these are the areas of improvement.

So, probably, they might even look for some upgrades or some changes over there. But these are the two key areas that we are facing issues with. One is the data moves a bit slow, and the integration within Microsoft products.

Maintenance is another issue that takes a lot of time and money. It can be a challenge in the long term.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for six to seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable, I would rate the stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability a seven out of ten. Because of the maintenance issue, we want to scale it up, but we're not able to do so because of the maintenance issue and delayed response.

It breaks down quite often, and it takes time and money to get the issue fixed. These are challenges that need to be addressed from a global perspective, not just from my process.

How are customer service and support?

The support from IBM might not be good, or the IBM people might have to contact Informatica for the solution. That could be a reason. But the resolution takes longer than expected.

There is room for improvement in the support. The response time could be faster.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

It is easy to install because our laptops come pre-configured. There were no issues. However, it is not easy to maintain.

We have a team that IBM handles for maintenance work. If there are issues, we raise a ticket, and they get sorted out, but it takes too long. It is not quick enough. The resolution takes more time than expected.

What was our ROI?

We saw an ROI. We have been able to get data from various sources and consolidate it into a data lake, which is helping us in data analytics. This aligns with our company's initiative to implement a data lake strategy and drive digital transformation.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Good integration capabilities with significant enhancements needed for data quality management

  • October 03, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We utilize it for two tasks. The first involves collaborating with our business team to identify specific data quality issues, and this part of the process runs smoothly. However, the second task is focused on using Informatica to investigate data issues that aren't entirely clear. This aspect doesn't yield satisfactory results, and we struggle to effectively pinpoint the problems using the tool.

What is most valuable?

When discussing data quality within IDMC (Informatica Data Management Cloud), it involves several modules, including CDI (Cloud Data Integration), CDP (Cloud Data Profiling), and Cloud Data Governance. Initially, we focused on Cloud Data Integration, which was the aspect we were already familiar with. We encountered challenges when trying to explore data quality issues using Informatica. We primarily used Cloud Data Profiling to connect with Cloud Data Governance, a tool also used by Teva. This integration allowed users to access data quality results within the data governance catalog.

What needs improvement?

We are currently working on improving the user interface for our end users. At the moment, our end users do not frequently connect to Informatica for data quality because they have trouble locating the results within the platform. The remediation processes are not adequately supported within it, and we cannot easily assign data quality issues to specific individuals, nor can we send the entire results to anyone via email. While we can send reports via email, we lack the capability to attach the actual results or provide links to them. We have been suggesting these improvements to Informatica, but as of now, we have not seen any significant progress. If given the opportunity, I would like to address these concerns, particularly with regard to enhancing the end-user experience. Also, there were initial architectural misalignments with the product. We believed that Informatica could directly connect to the source systems, but while it is technically possible, doing so would significantly impact the performance of the source systems. As a result, we did not receive approval to connect directly to them, and we did not plan to maintain copies of these systems.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with it for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability of the platform seven out of ten. We have faced a recurring issue after each quarterly upgrade or new release in their cloud platform. This problem involves the functionality that used to work correctly no longer operating as expected.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate its scalability capabilities six out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate it six out of ten.

Provides good scalability, but its technical support services need improvement

  • September 20, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the product to define policies and for data discovery management.

What needs improvement?

It is complicated to establish the lineage in EDC using PowerCenter mappings. We have to do the process manually every time. This particular area needs improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Informatica Axon for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable platform. However, we need to raise the ticket even for the smaller issues. There needs to be proper documentation available. They should provide enough information.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have eight to ten customers for Informatica Axon. It is a scalable product.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team takes time to complete the debugging process.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup process is fine, but there are a lot of infrastructure issues. It includes errors on the node cluster for EDC. Deployment is easy, but debugging is time-consuming. Whenever we raise the ticket to the support team, they take two to three days to evaluate the issue.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing price of the product depends on the organization's requirements. It is less costly than Collibra.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend Informatica Axon to others and rate it a seven out of ten.

Is user friendly and can handle large volumes of data without compromising performance

  • September 06, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We have a customer with a lot of data. We see a lot of quality issues, so we have implemented a data quality solution on-premises. Since everything is moving to the cloud, we are also moving our data quality solution to the cloud. We are building data quality goals for profiling, matching, and enrichment. There are other use cases, one example is matching data in our on-premises MDM system. To do this, we need to clean the data and profile it to understand its quality. We can then use data quality rules and matching modules to identify and resolve data quality issues. We also use it to validate customer email addresses and phone numbers on the fly in our in-house customer applications. Other use cases include data integration and data governance.

What is most valuable?

The user-friendliness and performance of Informatica is quite impressive. It’s easier to grasp and understand data quality, and how data governance tools work, as they are built on the same underlying architecture. The QCA addresses performance issues, whether it’s related to data, PowerCenter, or any other aspect. The shared underlying architecture enables me to pinpoint parameters for optimization. Informatica can handle large volumes of data without compromising performance. While other tools may offer similar capabilities, Informatica consistently delivers impressive results.

What needs improvement?

Informatica Cloud Data Quality provides many of the capabilities found in on-premises solutions. While the cloud edition offers additional features, it has also deprecated certain functionalities, such as connecting to web services. In the on-premises version, features like web service consumer and web service provider are available, but these functionalities are currently unavailable in the cloud edition. Vendors offer options for custom solutions, although they may not offer the same functionality as the on-premises version.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Informatica Cloud Data Quality for years. We are using the latest version of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution’s stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the solution’s scalability an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The team is acquiring knowledge. In our previous on-premises environment, we had a team of experienced engineers who were familiar with the system and could provide instant answers. However, in the new cloud environment, there’s a learning curve in the new cloud environment, and it may take some time for them to understand and respond effectively.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the solution a seven-point five out of ten.

Good for data governance, data quality and data exploration

  • August 15, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case is for data governance, data quality, data lineages, and data cataloging.

How has it helped my organization?

It is used by an internal team for data discovery. However, we are not able to provide business area-level access to other users because of data security.

What is most valuable?

It's a good product, and the features for data quality, data cataloging, and UI are excellent. It has a lot of advantages.

What needs improvement?

The major points of improvement are stability, integration, and permission to sub-folders or categories of data. If you want to provide access to a particular type of data discovery to a team, it exposes a lot of data points which in turn makes Axon not that useful for them.

Permissions, scalability, and connection with other informatic tools are the main areas that need development. Integration with other tools, such as IDQ, is challenging. The management of data discovery is highly challenging because many data points have identical definitions.

Mostly, this will come under the data security permission level or admin access.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Axon for a year, but I have been using other solutions from Informatica for five years now.

I currently use the latest version of Axon.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability a three or four out of ten. It's not loading at all and it keeps on getting down.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability a six out of ten. There is room for improvement.

We developed something on IDQ on the data quality side. If there is a huge data or a big workload, it takes a lot of time to run and we don't get the result in Axon.

There are around 10 to 15 end users using Axon in our organization.

What about the implementation team?

There is a different team for platform maintenance, management, and deployment. There are around ten people on the team. It's a mix of engineers and developers.

The platform team had some difficulties with admin-level things and keeping Axon up all the time because it's on-premises.

What was our ROI?

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Not on the governance, but I have used Databricks, Azure Synapse, Oracle, and other services by Azure.

Databricks is my personal favorite because of the scalability and the runtime it takes to load a large amount of data from a data engineering and data science perspective.

What other advice do I have?

I'll probably look for another solution because it has stability issues. When it's needed, it's usually unavailable.

However, it is a good product the way it's designed. It's a very good product, and it has a lot of features that are required for data governance. It moved all the Excel work to our web page, which can be accessible to everyone. It's a good product, but it needs some improvement.

Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.
