good organizational tool
What do you like best about the product?
- Ability to add multiple users with different editing levels, so some people can just download images but not edit them, etc.
- Organizing albums into folders and being able to upload the same image into multiple albums
- Organizing albums into folders and being able to upload the same image into multiple albums
What do you dislike about the product?
Some things in editing/settings can be hard to find because the interface is so clean. One example is adding custom tags, we have it set up so we have a category for adding the photographer's name. I have had to go in and add a photographer a few times and it's always tricky to remember how to get to it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Organization is huge, it's also great to use it as a photo collection tool. We will have events where we have our own photographers, but it's good that people from other groups can upload their images as well.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Canto is a great tool for anyone with multiple photographers and photo editors who need to work together to stay organized.
Intuitive Interface, Good tagging options
What do you like best about the product?
I think Canto has done a good job at implementing a balanced product. I was looking for several different ways of tagging assets. The AI tagging, descriptions, keywords, tags, + custom tags. Interface is easy to use. Some ability to customize layout to show/hide meta information.
The other feature I really liked was the ability to create portals to share photos from albums without having to create users for those outside of our team.

What do you dislike about the product?
Facial recognition has it's challenges. They use AWS. They've only had this for about 6 months though, so I'm hopeful it'll improve. I don't currently use it for now.
I wish Support would be more proactive when I provide feedback in the shortcomings of their product. Offer to submit an enhancement or something.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We needed to get away from the use of shared network drives and emails for storing/sharing photos. We didn't have an ability to effectively search photos or filter based on our results. We've already been able to satisfy several large requests for photos because of the search ability. What would've taken us hours before, now only took minutes.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Proper tagging will be the success or failure of any DAM solution. Take the time to educate the team on proper tagging structure.
Canto didn't offer as much guidance during setup as I had hoped for. We have a lot of one-off photos from events that are difficult to create reusable tags for. We ended up finding our own process for tagging these.

Canto has exceeded my expectations
What do you like best about the product?
It's so easy to use and has so many functionalities. It's just so easy to customize. Implementation was easy as well. We use it to share files and to organize all our company photos and videos. We were using our share drive before and that just wasn't working. The load time was forever and the files where not secure so people could delete things whenever they wanted. Not ideal. On the marketing side, it was impossible to look through our photos quickly to get one in an email.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes it can be overwhelming with all the ways you could organize your instance. As far as functionality, my only gripe is the multi-select option. The check box for selecting photos is sooooo light in color that you can't easily see which ones were selected. Plus, you must click RIGHT on that checkmark, or it doesn't take. Small price to pay though.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It has helped revolutionize the way that we store of company photos. We have since released it to the whole company and they absolutely love having access to our company photos. We find new uses for the portals all the time as well.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take your time and make sure your structure is set up correctly.
The portals are amazing and we have found many uses for them. We have sent all of our employees a link to a portal for employee photos with all our events. They love that they can search their name and find all the photos with them in it. We have also used it for

Great asset management
What do you like best about the product?
As an administrator, I don't have to keep up with updates of the software or troubleshoot why something has stopped working. We used Cumulus for years, and they took the best features and simplified it into Canto. It may be simpler, but has all the features we need. Creating Portals for our consumers is easy. Adding tags and keywords is very easy. Customization is easy. We didn't utilize all the nuances in Cumulus, so when some thing didn't work or was different from one catalog to another, it was hard to remember where to look to manage preferences. Canto is straightforward and so far we don't miss all the many preferences we were able to set in Cumulus. SaaS is very nice - no server and subsequent updates to manage.
What do you dislike about the product?
We are still getting used to how to filter and search. It is different than how Cumulus looked but is fresh. Our contributor seats are limited because of cost, but we hope to expand down the road. I would love to be able to have a base of contributors of 5 in their initial cost to allow some flexibility. Having brought over our assets from Cumulus, I would like to see a better folder structure look. It is a bit confusing looking to us. I do miss being able to set sticky search criteria per user to allow us and others to do that in the most helpful way to them. Cost is pricey for a higher ed institution, but is very much in line with other DAMs
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Making Portals allows a lot of flexibility with what our users see, and the layout is much more intuitive than our previous Portals. We are able to use multi-factor authentication with our user groups which adds security to the system without managing passwords. Setting preferences is very easy.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
While everything is simpler and easier to manage, make sure you have the flexibility and features you need if you are coming from another DAM software. If you are just starting out using a DAM for your company, this is a perfect way to get started.
Love the Ease of Use of Canto!
What do you like best about the product?
I like Canto because I can search the graphic that I need, without choosing the type of file -- just in case I find other types of images, or videos that I want. But, I can ALSO search a particular file type, too. It is very flexible in that way. And, it is a great place to store everything, from across our institution, so that I can see how others are promoting a particular thing. It was very easy to learn...trainings were offered, and is very intuitive.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only thing I dislike are some of the less than helpful tags that the program will add to an image. I understand, though, that over time the AI will become smarter and tag in a more appropriate and helpful manner.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Everything from across our institution is saved all on one platform that is easily searchable. And, better yet, I can develop a folder for my own files, too -- as well as have files for the media I deal with - so I don't have to find things for them!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are looking for a flexible, searchable, intuitive platform in which you can store many files of different file types; and be also able to share URL's for others to find the things they need -- this is the platform for you.
Canto in the Office
What do you like best about the product?
I appreciate the ease of use within the library, everything can be easily organized and have a place. I also like the feature to view photo locations on the map- is very helpful when trying to find a particular or older photo.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes all the photos on the home screen can be overwhelming. Would like to open Canto and be on my own following or collections. With such a large company many photos are uploaded. I also would like more user tutorials- I am new to a company who has been using the application for a while so whereas they're familiar I'd like a guide.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
N/A. Unsure.
Image Relay provides a media hosting solution that our company needed
What do you like best about the product?
We've used a couple different media hosting sites before and Image Relay has provided the best service for what we needed. The media displays fast, uploads & downloads are quick and it's a very clean & organized layout. Also being able to control who has access is big
What do you dislike about the product?
Speeds could be faster and it would be cool to have "versions" of media to keep track of changes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Media hosting solution that we can control the access to.
Amazing Organization - Poor sharing/downloading options
What do you like best about the product?
Ability to organize through nesting folders, and multiple sort options.
What do you dislike about the product?
In order to download or share photos, you have to go through a few clicks and a laggy process.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
All pictures are easily accessible anywhere and backed up digitally.
Great System to Manage Digital Assets
What do you like best about the product?
I find Image Relay very easy to use and navigate. You are able to upload in large batches, assign key words to make it easy to search and organize the photos in folders. You can also add users and give them different levels of permissions. One of my favorite features is being able to create “collections” of photos and then share the collection out. It gives you the ability to share certain photos and allow others to download them without giving them access to your entire database.
What do you dislike about the product?
No complaints - it is set up in a way that makes it easy to use for our current digital asset management needs.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We had gotten to a point where we had so many photos that it was hard to find what we needed by just storing them on our server. So I did survey of our campus to see what other departments were using to manage assets and there was no consistent tool and nothing the university offered. So I looked into off-campus services and really liked the functionality and price that Image Relay offered.
Good Photography Organization for Small Companies
What do you like best about the product?
I like the ability to search for different projects by name and get a sense of what projects are able to be shared publicly and in what context. I also like that everything is in one place that is accessible from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. I appreciate that I can brand the platform as an admin for my company so that when my colleagues interact with it they feel like they are directly engaging and interacting with our company as opposed to a third party host or another site hosted elsewhere.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike that it can get messy fast if the project owners do not upload the correct information or tag things incorrectly. For example, if the person who uploads a project defines a tag as one color when it actually is a different color, that can pose issues in marketing materials when we incorrectly identify something and the project is wrong in printed materials. It can make us look bad to clients as a result.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It's nice to have project files in one place for future references. We also have used Canto to provide a resource for our sales team when they are having conversations with potential or future clients so that they have examples at their disposal.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would recommend this product to smaller companies because it is so nice to have all project files in one place. Especially photography of said projects. However, for larger organizations with multi-pronged products it is a little more cumbersome.
