Media Composer for Professionals
What do you like best about the product?
Media Composer is a very efficient NLE. The audio tools and audio effects work really well inside of it and the ability to nest audio effects is great. They also recently increased the amount of audio tracks available which means less audio mixdowns required. Media composer also has it's built in color correction tool which makes it very easy to do a quick color correction for rough cut reviews. The standard short keys mapped to avid are very straightforward and MC makes it very easy to remap those keys as well.
I have also had very efficient support from the Avid Team when i encounter an issue.

What do you dislike about the product?
For someone who works a lot in after effects and Davinci Resolve, MC does not work the greatest when roundtripping. I've noticed with After effects I need to export clips and then send them to AE, otherwise MC crashes often. The same can be said about Resolve, I recently had issues trying to roundtrip 4k clips in a 1080p timeline. I ended up just having to export the whole timeline in order do my color grade and bring it back into Avid.
The only other thing is a lot of the new Sony Codecs do not work natively with MC, oftentimes i have had to either convert the files before bringing it into MC or I have had to download a plugin and AMA link them and then transcode.

Currently, this is the program mostly used at the shop I work in. Since all of our machines are MC composer machines, we can easily hop from one edit bay to another and start working on our projects on any machine. With the server software purchased from Avid we can also have more than one person working on the same project, which is extremely useful when under a time crunch. The ability to have custom profiles for each of our users is beneficial so each individual can once again jump on any machine and have access to their Personalized UI of MC.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would highly recommend MC for anyone in the video profession world. I would also argue that this program should only be one of many NLEs for a video professional. It's a very powerful tool, but for a freelancer picking up different projects, other companies may want you to edit in different programs. One cannot just be an "AVID MC editor", one must be proficient in many NLEs.
Avid Media Composer Review
What do you like best about the product?
Media Composer is the most popular and reliable editing program used by Hollywood editors. Compared to its competition its not as intuitive, but once you have sufficient knowledge of the program its the most robust option for editing professional material. Avid has been in business for a significant amount of time, excelling it past Final Cut Pro & Adobe, because of its additional tools (i.e. Avid Airspeed, Media Director, Media Central, Interplay, ISIS, etc). Project sharing in small, medium, and large environments is the best quality of Avid, in my opinion.
What do you dislike about the product?
Avid Media Composer often is associated with many bugs, which can cause distress across clients. AMA linking features can be improved, and very easily user MC settings/site settings/site attributes become corrupt quickly. The fix for this is to generally remove these settings, resulting in the clients having to rebuild their user settings within MC. Not ideal, but a small price to pay for an overall incredible product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I specifically work in Post-Production engineering, dealing with clients on a daily basis. I discover issues, work on effective resolutions, and work with the editor clients as a tech.
Avid - outdated or still relevant?
What do you like best about the product?
The ability for an editor and assistant to work dynamically within the same project using the bin lock feature has yet to be replicated in any other video editing software. Depending on the needs of a production I would highly recommend avid.
What do you dislike about the product?
Avid's file reading system has the tendency to cause errors (media offline in particular) very easily. Editors and assistants need to know troubleshooting and stay organized -- if not, you're in for trouble.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As mentioned above it is possible for assistants and editors to work in tandem on a project. The applications of this are boundless - the editor can be cutting while an assistant brings in project elements, etc. No need to save over the project file.
Minimal
What do you like best about the product?
File management and stability. Plugins available help with stabilizing, and other useful effects.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not the most easy program to navigate logically.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Able to access footage quickly. Allows for questions to be answered more efficiently.
Best software I've ever used, and has guided not only my career but my life!
What do you like best about the product?
There are many features of MediaComposer that I like best, but by far the difference is in the database management, the back-end. That is the real strength of this software over any of the competitors that have tried to overtake this software in terms of use and user-base.
What do you dislike about the product?
The direction of the company always seems to be a discussion point across the web. "Where are they going?" I just want to see a bit more interaction with the Adobe suite of products, similar to how Adobe Premiere works.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The simple fact that this software is a workhorse that never fails is the main reason for my love of this. The fail safe operation has been a direct benefit to the success of my business over the many years I've used it.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider your workflow and seriously consider the many reasons to use MC over any other software. It won't fail you.
Positive experience with Avid Media Composer as an Editing Tool
What do you like best about the product?
It is a professional software that allows for very in depth offline editing to be done. Our show has been using it for over 13 years.
What do you dislike about the product?
Its less intuitive than some of the newer software; but it becomes more editing friendly the more you explore it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
How to edit material in an offline workplace
A very strong editing software that always deliver
What do you like best about the product?
I start using Avid back in 1997, I'm still pleased with the product in so many ways. Editing capabilities, stable platform and well known brand.
Now that you can own the software can be used like Adobe cloud is even better. Back in the days Avid was pretty expensive.
Now that you can own the software can be used like Adobe cloud is even better. Back in the days Avid was pretty expensive.
What do you dislike about the product?
Avid, can be a very closed software to use, it's been hit by competition, like Media 100, FCP and Premiere. I feel that it should be a better way to translate projects from other editing systems like Adobe. I try to bring a Premiere project using EDL of AAF and I'm still having issues linking media.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Adobe products can be very buggy, specially with the wrong type of servers. Avid is very stable when you use. I know that Avid Unity is the best choice, but when you need to reduce cost Avid get the job done.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try to get training just 101 mode, this system can be difficult if you only use Adobe Premiere.
Editor using Avid MC
What do you like best about the product?
I really enjoy the interface and user experience of AVID as opposed to other editing software I've used in the past. Most people use Adobe Premiere, which is good for quicker/shorter projects, but if you're editing a feature and dealing with lots of footage, AVID has better capabilities. I also like that there are other tools included directly in the product, such as color correction, stabilization, and audio tools. This makes the whole post process easier and more streamlined.
What do you dislike about the product?
The downside of AVID is that it's more difficult to link to media, and importing footage takes a very long time. I often have to wait 6-8 hours to import a couple of cards worth of 1080p footage. Linking media is often also unreliable. It's happened to me a few times where I had to relink media when accessing the project again. That was a long process that seemed unnecessary and is perhaps easier in other softwares.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As an editor, having tools in the same program is very important to me for efficiency. AVID has a lot of great tools which make the post process quicker and easier.
