Best video editing software I've ever used

  • February 01, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The entire interface is easy to get used to and is just as easily customized to your preference. I haven't worked with an editing software that works nearly as fast as AVID does. It's so well known in the industry as the standard software, and it shows when you use it.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't like the text tool that is embedded within the program. It's easier to create texts that you need outside of AVID and then import and add them in separately.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We had interns that would edit videos for us on a weekly basis and this was a great platform for them to learn on. It was easily taught - in point, out point, "b" - and customized if they had experience with other softwares.

An aging editing suite on it's last legs

  • January 25, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Avid has one of the most straightforward editing workflows in the industry. If you are using Sony MXF based cameras and exporting to MXF it can be one of the simplest options and the program puts the focus on making solid editing decisions.

There's no fluff to Avid. Or not much, at least. It tries to do one thing and do it well.
What do you dislike about the product?
Unfortunately Avid has had a hard time keeping up with a changing industry. It's file handling is stuck back in the early 2000's. It's overly complicated and picky as far as what it will link to and import. There shouldn't even be the deliniation between importing and linking.

Relinking files can be a nightmare to the point of ruining a project should the wrong things get moved or renamed. It should not be that complicated. The Avid Media files folder is equally as unecessary and problematic. It files up just like the Adobe cache folder but unlike premiere if deleted with have catasrophic effects on your editing project.

On the subject of effects... the interface is clunky and what you can do with it is limited. The last straw for Avid was when I was editing a music video and spending 2 hours on an effect that I knew I could do in Premiere in under 5 minutes.

The mode switching is also overly complicated. I should be able to make a splice or do colour correction without having to switch 'modes' and have the UI change. It makes the editing experience very disjointed.

Product registration is also overly agressive and not user friendly. There's way too much codes and verifying. I should just be able to login once and get the software without being bothered again.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Straightforward editing workflow for traditional broadcast or film applications.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Don't overcommit to avid. It used to be the industry standard but I don't know how much longer that will be true.

Old as hell but still the most reliable

  • January 15, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Avid is like what I imagine it's like to climb into an old dusty pickup truck to go do some farm work; it may not be pretty, but after all these years it still works great. It allows me to work quickly and efficiently, and I don't have to worry about where my media is going. While it has an insanely steep learning curve, the amount you can do with it is just astounding. You have the ability to organize your footage and manipulate your metadata to however suits you, and it plays nicely with AJA boxes for client playback.
What do you dislike about the product?
Avid has been top dog for so long that it's been allowed to get away with some serious problems. The title tool is T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E, and just opening it makes my blood pressure spike. New Blue Titler needs to either replace it as the only title utility, or it needs a serious, ground up overhaul. Color correction likewise feels 15 years old, with no ability to do secondary corrections, power-windows, and very touchy controls. And while AudioSuite is an impressive toolset, the layering of effects is clumsy and needing to render in order to hear what you're doing is very cumbersome. And while fairly sturdy, it still crashes for seemingly no reason a frustrating amount.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Media Composer is, as far as I'm concerned, the only way to edit.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It takes time - a lot of time - to learn Avid. But once you know it, it's well worth the effort.

Media Composer

  • January 09, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
AVID's consistent interface, ongoing improvement and modifications, power and cross-platform share-ability. And with the newest iterations, ability to work in off-size rasters and up to 8k, ease of multiple versioning.
What do you dislike about the product?
A small complaint: clunkiness with ongoing licensing, snafus with application manager.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Most obviously, editorial power and versioning. Benefits of cutting with the industry leader and toolset.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Use other tools, of course. But AVID has kept up with file based workflows and remains, IMHO, the best way to cut.

Avid is the best three point editing software out there.

  • January 04, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Avid is a very comprehensive editing software. The customizable keyboards have allowed become very speedy and precise with my edits. The ability to work in the same project as another editor is crucial. That is by far the best feature of Avid. Thank God for lock bins.
What do you dislike about the product?
Avid seems like it has clunky coding. Errors pop up and they don't even begin to explain what the actual issues are. Luckily, using this product day in and day out allows you to "speak avid" be able to fix the issues. Also it can be very frustrating when working with mixed frame rates. I wish that one project could handle more than one frame rate without having to import into a native frame rate project first.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We edit with Avid. This company woudn't be able to run without it as it is an editing company. Our workflows require us to be in the same editing project at the same time and Avid is the only software that allows that.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Avid has a lot of complicated issues to figure out, but luckily there are a lot of forums online.

Avid, although old school, is the best non linear editing software.

  • January 04, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Being an Avid editor makes you a better editor. To work in Avid you need to be precise with what edits you want to make and where. I find that versus Premiere or formerly Final Cut 7, the dragging and dropping in the timeline can sometimes lead to happy accidents, but normally just makes editing clunkier.
What do you dislike about the product?
Avid has very confusing error messages. Versus something like Premiere that tells you exactly what your problem is, Avid will raise an error such as "SYS -5000" and you just need to know from experience or web searches what this means and how to fix it. I also dislike some of the effects, and find them to be somewhat user unfriendly. The effects are also named strangely, and I find it weird that opacity is called "foreground," for example.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our entire business relies on Avid. We are commercial editors, so we craft stories out of sometimes 30+ hours of footage into either short 15 second commercials to sometimes longer form web videos of 5 minutes or more. Being knowledgeable in Avid is crucial to working in the film editing industry. Being an assistant, I work one on one with my editor constantly. The seamless project sharing/bin lock system is vital to our workflow and allows me to stay on top of what my editor is doing.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Watch tutorials for the best way to 3 point edit, and how to use their effects. The effects are not intuitive and require training whether you are learning from someone else are watching tutorials on Youtube.

Industry Standard for a Reason

  • December 21, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Honestly, I've used it for so long now, it's the only thing I really know. It's familiar, and at least for me, fairly intuitive.
What do you dislike about the product?
In the recent updates, a few menu options have moved, and I'm a creature of habit.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Media Composer allows me (and my coworkers) to turn around professional video edits for multiple platforms quickly.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Tutorials are your friend. The internet if a fantastic resource for learning, and there's always something to learn in Avid.

The Original and the Best

  • December 20, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
This software is designed for both form and function. Very intuitive interface. Stable software and great support from Avid.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is really nothing I dislike about this software
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
3D film production workflow in Avid is simple and easy which is something other editing software can’t even touch.

Avid Media Composer is for the serious editor

  • June 06, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Avid is the longstanding giant in the industry, and for good reason. Its project management capabilities are unparalleled, allowing for easy moving/reloading of projects. Project sharing is also very easy and rock solid within the Avid shared storage environment. The software does not slow down upon lengthy use or with very large projects. Avid was created specifically for editors, not as an add-on to an existing product line.
What do you dislike about the product?
Things such as the title tool and effects badly need modernization badly. Inability to nest timelines. Software bugs that pop up require lengthy workarounds.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Avid is a tool for the storytelling editor. The learning curve is steep, but that in the end proves to be a benefit to increase editing speed and simplify project and media management. The ability to have different users work in the same project at the same time is critical for a small production operation.

Great Editing Software for Professionals

  • May 01, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love that this program has keyboard shortcut control. It's use with large servers such as Isis and Unity make it a great program when dealing with large media, many file and many projects being shared by multiple editors. Because Avid creates duplicate MXF files for all of it's media, it allows easy relinking and it's impossible to lose any of the media since it's backed up within the program itself. It's keyboard commands allow the fastest editing out of every editing program. The color grading in Avid is also very good.
What do you dislike about the product?
The biggest downfall to using Avid MC is the complexity in the UI. The UI hasn't changed since the 90's and many of the most important features are hidden within the program, so new users often become confused when learning it. Avid also isn't dynamically linked to industry standard animating and illustrating software like Adobe Premiere is.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This progam is best for editing large quantities of media for multiple editors that share projects.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you're on a tight budget, I'd suggest getting Adobe Cloud instead, as it's much cheaper. If you're a large company with lot of media and editors sharing projects, then I'd absolutely recommend getting Avid MC.
