OutSystems: An outstanding platform, if you know what you're doing
What do you like best about the product?
Development of business applications as well as customer facing applications is fast and relatively simple to do in OutSystems. Prototyping is easy and it takes a lot of standard development work out of a developer's hands. This means more time to work on parts of software that really distinguish your application from others. If you set up the architecture in the right way, development is even more faster because the reuse of components.
OutSystems has a Forge which offers a variety of plugins that are mostly free to use. This makes it easy to extend your factory and you don't have to program functionality yourself.
OutSystems offers template screens, web applications and even mobile apps. This is a great way to start building applications fast. The components from OutSystemsUI are easy to use and offer all the functionality needed, in most cases. And if not, search the Forge or build it yourself.
Learning OutSystems is easy. It offers a lot of (online) courses and guided paths. When following and completing a guided path, developers are able to put their knowledge into practice. Ofcourse, as always, they'll still make mistakes and will get better when gaining experience.
The OutSystems Community offers a lot of support. Reactions are fast and fellow developers often create little pieces of sample software in order to help. That's a very big advantage. Community members are all about helping everyone making to most of their experience with OutSystems and delivering value to their business. What do you dislike about the product?
Ofcourse, like most platforms, there are also a couple of downsides. While the Forge offers a wide range of plugins that you can use, the quality of support on these plugins varies. Even for some plugins that are supported by OutSystems. On top of that, one would expect that some functionality which is considered standard nowadays, would be out of the box available but isn't. Ofcourse, it can be created yourself but still.
Error messages aren't always clear and it doesn't take all work out of your hands. You still have to think really carefully about things like UX and architecture. OutSystems lets you create software very fast and because of that, it can also let you make a mess very fast.
Finally, the licencing costs are high, especially for smaller projects and companies and they increase disproportionate.

We bought OutSystems as innovation platform. It's mainly used to digitalize, optimize and increase efficiency for internal business processes

The primary benefit of using OutSystems was our ability to deploy rapidly. We could deploy changes to our applications every two weeks.
Mostly, it was web applications that we created, utilizing the responsive aspect of OutSystems for traditional web applications.
What is most valuable?
It was easy to learn. OutSystems provides different tutorials depending on the user's expertise, so even beginners can quickly get up to speed.
Moreover, OutSystems integration with our database and internal systems was easy.
What needs improvement?
I would like to see improvements in versioning. It can be challenging to keep track of what changes should be committed, especially when many developers are working in one environment.
So, I would like to see support for different version models especially when multiple developers are working on the same module, it can be confusing to know which changes need to be deployed when comparing and merging codes.
In future releases, A built-in chart feature would be useful. We had to use Google Charts plugin for dashboards. Native support for charts, like bar and pie charts, would be beneficial.

With OutSystems, my company started working with it in 2017.

I would rate the stability an eight out of ten. It is pretty stable.

The very expensive licensing and the fact that if you want to stop using Outsytsems, it means you can't efficiently build upon the code generated by Outsystems, basically putting your progress on the project to a stop.

The amount of time it takes to create a new application screen is speedy. Buttons and forms are beneficial to get a pre-structured UI.
When we talk for Client action and server action it is very easy to understand someone's logic and the debugging UI is too easy.

Data security: When I say data security I mean the role hierarchy, eg we have a multiples roles and the reoles are in form of a tree it becoles very comples to have object, field and record level security with respect to data isolation from other users

Ousystems helps in creating completely new applications from scratch according to user needs and also helps in tranforming existing codebase/logic written in different programming language to Outsystems with the help of user stories. It also helps in creating Proof Of Concepts to see if new projects are viable or not.
