Complex queries aren't problem anymore
What do you like best about the product?
The most appealing aspect of Starburst in my opinion is the ability to have all the data in a single query layer. This makes its based on SQL interface ideal for complex query across numerous systems without overburdening by the data. I appreciate its ability to work alongside our current data structure, and the real time nature of the data obtained from it. This has improved the effectiveness of the analytical work we do and how we make decisions.
What do you dislike about the product?
Starburst is not as optimal as it could be when used on data sets of very large sizes. It is common for the query to be processed for more time than is desired by the user, a condition that affects the efficiency levels. Further, while the SQL interface is rich, novices will find difficulty in using it for they will have to learn SQL to perform operations. These have almost at one time given rise to problems that include latency and sometimes necessitated additional time to enhance query performance .

Efficient querying solution across multiple data sources
What do you like best about the product?
What I consider most impressive is the way Starburst can query data from multiple sources as long as it doesn’t have to move or duplicate them. Namely, it has helped to optimize our work process, providing better data processing from such sources as AWS S3 and PostgreSQL. The key enhancement offered by the software has been ability to handle complex queries and integrate well with the current data architecture, which has significantly boosted our ability to identify and use data analytics in decision making.
What do you dislike about the product?
One area that may be tricky in Starburst is the setup and configuration of the platform. While the platform is highly versatile, fine tuning how it interacts with different data sources can be surprisingly cumbersome at times. This has taken a lot of time to set up initially and has required a more technical team from us than we had anticipated. Moreover, inexperience is a concern that can result in a time consuming period before they can start contributing which has been an issue.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Starburst helps solve the problem of data scattering because with it, one can query data from different sources while the sources do not have to be incorporated into a single database. This capability has rectified one of the biggest limitations we used to have in terms of real time data access and analysis. It has streamlined the process, reduced the amount of time spent on data preprocessing and let’s concentrate on analysis and decision making. Thus, the operation has become increasingly more impersonal and based on received information.

What do you dislike about the product?
The only thing I can think of regarding ETL-related data pipeline work execution is that it is still not very feasible in Starburst.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
EDL users are happy after migrating from Hive engine to Trino engine due to good performance. HDFS data querying was the biggest problem for existing users, which Trino has solved. As we can connect heterogeneous data platforms using Trino to perform analytics, and due to this feature, data movement and data engineering costs have gone down significantly.

A drawback of Starburst is the complex setup that can be technically challenging, especially if the team tries to implement it in systems that do not allow it easily. There were certain challenges that we experienced during the implementation process and this hampered our schedule a little. Moreover, the reaction of customer support was not as fast as we expected, which made the problem solving stage longer than it could be. Some of these issues caused some frustration, especially when we were still setting up the various software solutions.
