  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to get started and tons of useful custom metrics to monitor the application/servers effectively
What do you dislike about the product?
the volume of data it ingests is sometimes on the higher side what I felt, that might increase the costs. I believe there should be ways to reduce the same
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Lots of custom metrics provided for server level monitoring helps to identify/troubleshoot the issues quickly. On the app monitoring side, it becomes easy to find the culprit with.

Easy-to-use, simple look and feel

  • May 05, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Our use cases were varied. We had front-facing applications, message brokers, API gateways, legacy applications running on RPC, and platforms. We used New Relic for instrumentation, and we discovered different metrics using it.

How has it helped my organization?

New Relic is an APM tool, similar to Dynatrace or Datadog. It uses an agent to discover metrics based on browser, mobile, and custom matrices. We can also develop synthetic monitoring. It has helped us in exploring the metrics.

What is most valuable?

The best feature of New Relic is its simple look and feel, making it easier to use than other tools.

What needs improvement?

One thing New Relic needs to improve is the user data schema. It wanted us to move from version one to version two, but that was difficult because we wanted to do single sign-on, and it couldn't support our Ping Identity platform. That's something New Relic needs to work on.

Another issue I have with New Relic is its suite licenses. It has a two-tier system: the full-stack observability, which requires a suite license, and the free version, which doesn't offer any peer review capabilities. It needs to change because having a suite license for a user who can only view the post-stack, not even the curated view, is a big no-no. Dynatrace or SAP don't have this issue.

I should point out one more thing about New Relic. We use it with OpenShift, and one of the issues we faced was that New Relic required root access, which was a concern because no admin in the world would give any third-party vendor root access. However, they seem to have corrected this in the next version.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using New Relic for three years. We're using version 8.0.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has its limitations, but it is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a cloud-based solution, so the platforms automatically scale.

How are customer service and support?

We struggled with the support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are currently using Dynatrace. We have moved away from New Relic because of its shortcomings – the user data schema. They had two versions, and we couldn't group different entities under version one. For example, our enterprise applications are numerous, including activation, OSS, BSS applications, and so forth.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is an expensive solution. The licensing scheme is based on users having to have full stack observability, and there is no free version for non-seat license users to access what they want to see. I believe it's an expensive tool. They were not like that a couple of years back. Their new licensing scheme is based on full-stack capabilities; many clients would not like it. I would rate the licensing model a four out of ten. It is a very poor licensing scheme.

What other advice do I have?

It works well, and it has a very good look and feel to it. However, it also has its limitations. So some clients may like it. That's why they will be willing to pay more for New Relic compared to any other API. It's fine.

Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Better insight into the product via new relic

  • April 28, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Its quite easy to setup and run with minimal config changes or hookups. The APIs and integrations provided support to almost all of the use cases one may have. It provides better insight into the product helping us to make informed decisions based on the observability provided by this tool.
What do you dislike about the product?
We ran into a heap/memory issue with the product. On further investigation, noticed that the tool holds on to the entier object graph in the memory, which will eventually lead to out-of-memory errors or stack overflows. Especially for use cases where the code has to execute within a loop and has a deeper nested object graph, the chances of running into this issue is quite possible. Since we had many such usecases, we had to turn off the traceability for those flows, hindering the usage of the tool.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As I mentioned earlier, it helps bring better observability. It provides insights into the product that helps optimize it based on this information, rather than just trying to optimize by trial. This helped us to trace a request origin across different front ends and UI interfaces that our product supports. This lead to understand the complete request flow end-to-end and thereby helping to take corrective actions where needed.

An analytics-oriented solution that is both stable and scalable, packed with a diverse range of features

  • April 28, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use New Relic to generate log management, like the different kinds of logs and alarms, and automate the same easily.

What is most valuable?

The versatility of the solution is its most valuable feature. It offers features like user behavior and user experience monitoring besides log management in one suite. When comparing it with other tools, other tools are primarily focused on only the management or only user behavior, but New Relic has both features.

What needs improvement?

The initial setup can be made easier. Like Mixpanel, New Relic can also have a step-by-step guide for the setup process. It needs slight improvements to be made in the user experience.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using New Relic for two to three months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution. I rate it eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution. I rate it eight out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was simple, but it can be made easier. I rate it seven out of ten. I did not deploy it a hundred percent because I was testing it out. The solution was deployed on the cloud.

What other advice do I have?

I will recommend the solution, especially for a large product. So that one can have complete monitoring from the front-end tool and back-end server side.

I rate the overall product an eight out of ten.

Multi Platform and Solid APM, but still third party.

  • May 19, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that it supports multiple clouds seamlessly, and has a simple and straightforward installation process. The APM tools are bar none and a lot of effort was clearly put in to making information easy to find and visualizable.
What do you dislike about the product?
There's still an extra installation process, and the ins and outs of that process aren't made very clear in the quickstart or the docs themselves -- if I wanted to install this in a k8s cluster, what variables do I need to set? Do I REALLY have to mount a file'?

Also, the line between the various products (APM, synthetics, errors, etc) are not at immediately intuitive -- to me or to the devs on my team.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The error reporting has been really handy. NRQL is solid and has made it easy to throw together dashboards that we check at least weekly.

Lower-urgency issues that used to go unsolved for weeks are now visible, which is a big deal for a small team like ours.
