Stable OS and suitable for low-end devices

  • May 24, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use Ubuntu Linux as my primary operating system on my personal device.

What is most valuable?

Firstly, it's open source, and secondly, I like its computation speed compared to Windows and other similar features.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes certain tasks are challenging due to issues with the command-line interface. Users who prefer Windows may find it difficult to transition to Linux. So, I believe Linux could enhance its user interface to make it more user-friendly for a wider range of users.

Therefore, I suggest improving the user interface.

In additional features, I would like to add an additional software store alongside the existing one. Similar to the Microsoft Store, it offers a wide range of software options.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using it since 2016. I am using version 22.0 LTS.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Ubuntu Linux have two types of releases. The first one is LTS (Long Term Support), and they also release short-term support versions every nine months. I mostly prefer the LTS version because they are the most stable.

How are customer service and support?

I have utilized community forums for VMware-related queries.

How was the initial setup?

For the general public, I don't think it's easy because most OS installations are typically handled by engineers or service center guys. So, for non-technical users, it's similar to installing Windows or any other operating system.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Ubuntu Linux is free for personal use, including business use. However, if you require enterprise-level support from their team, you need to pay a subscription fee. Ubuntu offers custom pricing that may vary based on the business requirements.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

When I started using it initially, it had better accessibility and speed. I have a low-end laptop with an AMD processor that doesn't work well with Windows. So, I chose Ubuntu Linux as it works efficiently on that device too.

What other advice do I have?

You should give Ubuntu Linux a try. I would give it a ten. It's the best, in my opinion.

User experience of Ubuntu for a software engineer

  • March 09, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It gives more control to user, then it's competitor like windows or Mac OS, with well exposed kernal, command line, and the best part is security, it is safe from Trojans and viruses.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some times there are issues with the drivers like for audio, or if you want to connect a printer, windows and mac handle those well, also it has very less games support as compared to others.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
When developing software we need a faster system that uses less resource and handle the software well, even the servers are hosted on Linux, Ubuntu, which uses very light resource.

I like Ubuntu for the reasons listed below.

1. Port use for the Linux kernel.

2. Cron jobs simplify tasks.

3. The SNAP and APT managers are quite helpful,

4. Real-time patch updates offer a bug-free user experience.

5. Because Linux is a kernel, making little adjustments can be useful.

6. A tidy and orderly interface.

7. Flexible command-line software.

8. The sudo command, which demands administrative rights.

9. The use of processing power.

10. Port use for the Linux kernel.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't like the bullet points below while running Ubuntu.

1. No support for running directX files is available.

2. Support for Vulcan drivers is likewise limited by architecture.

3. It will be challenging to play Windows games.

4. A small community compared to its competitors.

5. A bit more flexibility in customization would have been nice.

6. There is no fingerprint driver for HP laptops.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In many situations, Ubuntu is beneficial.

1. Admin rights are simple to use.

2. A more rapid performance.

3. Powershell-based command line interface that is fluid.

4. The environment felt welcoming to newcomers because Python and G++ drivers were already installed.
