Great OS and flexibility, hardware not as reliable
What do you like best about the product?
Control and visibility of traffic rules and data. Easy to configure rules and settings. Not bound to hardware and configuration can be easily ported to different hardware.
What do you dislike about the product?
The negate hardware has been unreliable. Would not use in remote distant areas due to failures and difficulty for an average user/remote hands restoring the appliance.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Geoblocking countries we are not in business with, DNS control and visibility, granular firewall rules, aliases, Snort, pfblocker, DNS, and VPN with relative ease.
Netgate pfSense appliance
What do you like best about the product?
The appliance seems very secure and allows me to configure my home office easily with plenty of video walkthroughs on YouTube.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI could be easier in some places and workflows would be great to set a VPN up from scratch. The base OS is not the latest but that is already being worked on.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The two things that the pfSense resolves is security of my network connection and handling VPN's for multiple devices.
Powerful & affordable/free firewall and network management system
What do you like best about the product?
PfSense offers an advanced, intuitive firewall with highly sophisticated and customisable network tools to effectively manage and protect one or more network properly.
What do you dislike about the product?
The system could be complicated for beginners and intermediate users, but good videos are available online to help beginners and novice users. Additional add-ons would have been nice, especially for home and small business users who cannot afford separate systems or hardware-based systems. Tools to assess issues and challenges, e.g. throughput & latency, up or downstream.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
pfSense is a comprehensive firewall- and network management system at an affordable price. pfSense competes well against costly hardware firewall systems with even less functionality. pfSense is one of a few advanced firewall and network management systems that home users can use for free. pfSense integrates all the functionality of a firewall, network management and other tools into one system. It enables a small to medium enterprise's user- or network administrator to guard against cyber attacks. End device management is also part of pfSense. pfSense can manage access to certain features and (or) websites and services that could expose a business to security issues.
Good software which just works. Very reliable.
What do you like best about the product?
Easy to use. Helpful and easy-to-understand documentation. Huge community. Many "recipes" are available on user forums. Nice web interface. CLI is also available.
What do you dislike about the product?
The support package covers only issues with software. It does not cover questions like "how can I do this and that with pfSense". It's developing much slower that a competition. Some critical features are not available out of the box, and you have to install them as an add-on.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
You can have a router with HA features for a relatively low price.
Excellent
What do you like best about the product?
The modularity of its functions and security options that adapt to a wide variety of environments, whether business or domestic, allowing for its implementation.
What do you dislike about the product?
It does not have updated support for when using content filtering modules, which are very necessary nowadays, I think it is an area of opportunity.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Security at the firewall level, content filtering, network routing with VLANs, internet access control and bandwidth regulation, as well as wireless service management.
great interface and many features available
What do you like best about the product?
Easy interface, easy to configure. I'm using the firewall and HA proxy.stability. no crashes sofar with 2.6 version. Certificate management is easy to handle. there should be an SSL vpn portal.
What do you dislike about the product?
No OTP on different reverse proxy pages. No SSL portal for ssl applications to serve. An ssl portal i installed it from sophos with pfsense as front page , just to offer ssl vpn ( clientless).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
At first a firewall to which filters good to my expectation. I configured HA proxy with Outlook and web sites with this tool. To get an secure connection i use Let's encrypt and the cert's can be managed by pfsense.
A firewall that does what we need with a great knowledgebase behind it
What do you like best about the product?
The WebGui makes it possible to config almost everything without using a terminal
What do you dislike about the product?
The initially high purchase price. But is it actually big deal? I think not.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
If you have a Netgate without an internal switch the vlan configuration is easy to understand.
Complex firewall rules without GUI, DNS resolving, IDS, nTop and VPN configurations are quickly done. And there are actual people with knowledge out there you can hire.

pfSense for SME office
What do you like best about the product?
The VPN feature, able to use it without the restriction numbers of user like normal OpenVPN server.
What do you dislike about the product?
For me, the firewall rules part is a bit confusing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Secure remote access to office environment, I am able to manage in house infra without the need to open a lot of ports on the firewall level.
Stable, secure, simple
What do you like best about the product?
pfSense is a product I've been using for literally years to secure my home internet connection and, more recently that of my small business. It boasts an amazing community where most issues will already have an answer on the various forums. During COVID lockdowns, the simplicity of setting up VPN connectivity allowed everyone to continue working remotely with next to no issues.
What do you dislike about the product?
Since the push toward a more commercially focused product, the regularity of the updates has diminished; however - it's a firewall, and stability SHOULD be celebrated.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Provides a simple interface through which to provision new VPN connections (and users) along with making it intuitive to create DHCP leases for fixed network assets and allowing specific traffic to transit various VLANs
Involved process, but worth the experience.
What do you like best about the product?
The level of control I have over my firewall. I can isolate all of the network traffic as needed with minimal issues in the process. I like that I could potentially extend pfSense, given that I have a backgroun d in php.
What do you dislike about the product?
The lack of some templated functionality for setting up monitoring and not restricting someone from potentially installing plugins out-of-sync with the version.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Isolating network traffic where certain devices have a tendency to "phone home" with telemetry being gathered on my network(s). I can now explicitly stop behavior and have more insight into what's going on.
