Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Inexpensive with an easy deployment and good replication capabilities
What is our primary use case?
We have a new VMware vSphere Cluster with several Virtual Machines (Windows-based and Linux-based). We needed a new backup solution for those new workloads. I deployed in a second site, a new backup server with a storage SAN directly attached. I deploy NAKIVO B&R in a virtual appliance and with it, I protect all of the inventory of the VMs and save the backups and data in a backup repository with an immutability feature.
At the moment, we don't use Replication, however, I studied this feature. Maybe I will deploy this feature in the future on some new vSphere hosts in a DRP site.
How has it helped my organization?
Nakivo's replication feature can permit configuration replicas in a different hardware platform with VMware vSphere. We protect all of our virtual machines in VMware vSphere and secure our data with the immutability feature; our virtual machines are Windows-based and Linux-based. We have SQL Server, IIS, Active Directory Instances, PACS, and File Servers.
What is most valuable?
The virtual appliance for VMware vSphere is easy to deploy, easy to manage, and we have no need for additional Windows licenses. NAKIVO has an immutability feature that protects our backup data. Nakivo is a backup solution good for the first steps in backup and replication uses cases. It offers low license costs and is very easy to deploy.
I recommend the Virtual Machine Appliance for all VMware vSphere Infrastructures.
I deployed it to a second site with a new backup server with a storage SAN directly attached. I deploy edNAKIVO B&R in a virtual appliance and with it, I protect all the inventory of the VMs.
What needs improvement?
They need a better knowledge base with more information about support issues.
I would like new recovery methods for my VM and live full VM restore overwriting and the ability to restore individual files on the VM (like VMDK, VMX).
I would like it if Nakivo could protect virtual machines with WSFC deployed on VMware (usually SQL Server clusters virtualized).
I would like to restore my data on a cloud site. I would like a new replication method with zero RTO (better than snapshot replication).
I would like new features for the backup agent for physical machines.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for one year.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did previously use a different solution.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Nakivo is good for the first steps in backup and replication. If comes at a low license cost and is very easy to deploy.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did evaluate other options.
Great support, easy to configure, and offers a encrypted offsite backup
What is our primary use case?
This is our backup software for our VMs.
We recently moved from having physical machines to having virtual machines. Our traditional backup method wouldn't be useful for backup up our VMs as well as the infrastructure. We do not have a large operation so we didn't want something that was subscription-based as, in the long run, it wouldn't really be worth it.
Nakivo lets you do a one-time purchase which for our small setup was a better value. It is not easy to find something like that nowadays.
How has it helped my organization?
We made the move from physical to virtual machines and Nakivo allows us to safely and quickly back up all of our VMs.
It was also very easy to configure backups to be sent offsite to a separate repository for disaster recovery needs. This improved our organization because now we can conveniently have all of our VMs backed up onsite and offsite. This allows us to have a solid disaster recovery plan in place by having multiple copies of our backups. We can have copies on an offsite NAS, or on a portable HDD, and they can all be encrypted - which is even better.
What is most valuable?
The encrypted offsite backup is very useful. Being able to have a copy of every VM stored offsite is invaluable for disaster recovery. It was very easy to set that up and it works very fast; it is able to compress and transfer large amounts of data quickly. I was blown away by how fast it transfers offsite to another repository.
One other thing that is often overlooked is the level of support the company offers you. Nakivo support has been great. I had some complex problems that they helped me resolve and they did it quickly. They are very helpful people.
What needs improvement?
One complaint I have is the dashboard flashing as it reloads/refreshes itself. The program was not always like that and it happened after an update at some point. When it refreshes the dashboard the whole screen flashes and all the squares that held information, like the charts that show data transfer and other things, all blink out and reload at the same time. Refreshing all those in real-time should be possible without having them behave that way. Sometimes I get confused with the retention settings versus what is actually being backed up.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for two years.
Easy to use, quick to deploy and offers fair pricing
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides a cost-effective solution without compromising on features and functionality. I selected NAKIVO Backup & Replication to benefit from its cost-effectiveness, user-friendly interface, versatile platform support, performance optimization, advanced features, and storage efficiency.
The setup process is very quick and I am able to install it on a Windows machine in less than five minutes. The app for a QNAP NAS system has proven to be very useful, quick to deploy, and reliable.
What is most valuable?
I found Nakivo valuable for the following aspects:
- ease of use
- quick to deploy
- great value for pricing
- professional and quick support
The VM Backup Verification is one of the features I appreciate the most. Other than that, the possibility to have remote (off-site) repositories has been a feature we really love, since it helps us to provide our customers with remote backups, storing the data with encryption and deduplication to allow safe and reduced storage usage.
The notification process helps us to be aware of each backup result.
What needs improvement?
I would love to see compatibility with KVM Backup. We would appreciate seeing Proxmox Virtual Environment (PVE) supported to provide reliable backup to this virtualization host.
Another feature that we would find helpful would be the possibility to update automatically all the transporter (local and remote) when updating the director. This will make the system update process faster and easier to deploy in more complicated infrastructures with multiple repositories and transporters.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the product for seven years.
Lightweight with good deduplication and compression
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution as a VM backup from local servers and remote data centers. Nakivo is installed on a NAS device at the office, and it doesn't need any external servers to run. That makes it really easy to deploy, and in case of disaster for servers, the NAS device is totally separate from them, and backups can be restored quickly to another environment where ever is enough resources to run them.
The remote data center can also be backed up to a small repository on that data center and then copied over an internet link to the office, where I have more space to store backups.
How has it helped my organization?
Backups are working smoothly with Nakivo Backup. Deduplication and compression of backup repositories save lots of disk space, and I can keep many more restore points compared to situations where deduplication is not used.
Having a couple of the latest restore points saved in the repository at a remote data center allows restoration of them quickly without the need first to transfer them over the internet from the office. It also is nice to be able to copy backups to the office, where I have plenty of more disk space to save them compared to a remote data center.
What is most valuable?
There is no need to install agents on VMs. It is easy to deploy new VMs and get them backed up instantly.
It can be fully run from a NAS device. There is no need to have separate backups servers and be able to run a full Linux environment without Windows servers.
Deduplication and compression of backup repositories are easy. It saves lots of disk space and enables you to keep many more recovery points compared to a situation where all recovery points are saved as is without deduplication.
It's a lightweight solution built over Linux. It can be run directly from NAS devices and doesn't need separate backups servers installed on the network.
What needs improvement?
We'd like to see more cooperation with Synology. It can be enhanced to get updates published faster to Synology's store.
I don't have any other complaints about Nakivo Backup, and I like it as it is. I have used many other backups solutions like Veeam, Actifio, and Acronis, and Nakivo has done things better than those other backup solution providers.
Of course, there can be some cases where others might perform better; however, for my use case, Nakivo Backup does just what is needed, and it is done properly without problems.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for about three years.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have previously used VMPro, Veeam, and Actifio.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is cheaper than many competitors.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I have previously evaluated Veeam.
Low-cost, easy to use, and good web-based management
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution as a VM backup with our VMware and Hyper-V environments.
How has it helped my organization?
We can back up our file server with an extra layer of security due to the ransomware protection that Nakivo offers.
What is most valuable?
The solution is low-cost, easy to use, and has web-based management. These are some of the major advantages. The addition of apps for NAS (like Synology and QNAP) has made it much easier to back up and protect the servers.
What needs improvement?
We'd like to see a legacy environment backup, like AIX, etc.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of the solution is good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of the solution is good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did not previously use a different solution.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
This product provides cost-efficient and reliable backups.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Flexible, improves resiliency, and has excellent customer service
What is our primary use case?
We use the product to back up our entire ESXi server data center as well as our physical servers and CIFS folders across ten branches. We also use it to back up our Office 365 data.
In addition, we use Nakivo to replicate our VMs in our disaster recovery continuously, as well as to perform tests regularly for failover scenarios.
We also use it as a monitoring system for our infrastructure. If a VMServer has an outage, we get alerted by Nakivo by mail. Finally, Nakivo has helped us get a good picture of our backup strategy.
How has it helped my organization?
The solution helped us review and re-organize our backup and replication strategy. The main goal was to us become compliant with the 3-2-1-1 approach of backups and to be safe in a disaster scenario.
As a result, it improved reliability for our banking customers in terms of downtime and data safety by ensuring the backups were safe. It also modernized our infrastructure with the awesome anti-ransomware protection of backups.
We are also in a heavily regulated environment, and Nakivo is very impactful in that regard, as we can provide a solid backup strategy with security in place.
What is most valuable?
It's a great product and another weapon in our resiliency arsenal. It has saved us numerous times from power outages and server failure, and also it was a star at our BCP test for compliance purposes.
Also, It covers all of our server options (365, virtual, and physical), and also has backup targets for tape and Azure blob as well as a backup copy feature for local backup copies. It's the most important software for our 3-2-1-1 backup strategy.
Another feature is the anti-ransomware protection that works really well with the ZFS storage we have implemented.
What needs improvement?
It could improve in terms of monitoring systems more in-depth. For example, having an alert for power outages or if RAM is in critical condition. It would d be good to have a broader portfolio of integrations with other alerting options. This would be good for companies that have limited resources and want everything in a single pane of glass.
It could be a little bit faster in terms of backup and offer more reliable SQL server backups. Sometimes it wasn't as reliable.
It could support some older/legacy systems so that companies that need modernization can use Nakivo to migrate VMs. As an example, we had a legacy VMWare ESXi 4.1 server that we couldn't migrate using Nakivo.
For how long have I used the solution?
This is my fourth year now of using this solution.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is very stable and resilient.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is scalable in terms of the backup strategy. You can have your backup on the local drive (encrypted), back up a copy to a DR, back up a copy to an external device, or back up copy on the cloud (Azure blob and Wasabi, etc). Also, it supports a tape backup.
You can deploy it on a Linux server, as an appliance, on Windows, and as a VM.
How are customer service and support?
Customer support is at an elite level. They always respond fast, and the solutions are on point. I couldn't be happier.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used Veeam, and we decided to switch to Nakivo due to the easier interface and more straightforward approach.
How was the initial setup?
The setup process is very straightforward - especially the NAS appliance setup.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented the solution in-house as it is very easy to implement.
What was our ROI?
We have witnessed an ROI.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost is pretty low considering our infrastructure, and the licensing includes VM Servers, physical servers, and Office 365.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated keeping Veeam or going to Nakivo. We chose Nakivo.
Easy-to-use, robust and cost-effective
Our company has been using Nakivo for five years as a backup solution for a small vSphere cluster. Although newer versions have many other features, we only use them for on-premises VM backup.
Nakivo acts as a safety net for our data. Among other things, the ability to quickly recover information when needed gives us the peace of mind that comes from knowing that business continuity is in place.
Personally, I appreciate the following two aspects:
- Flash VM boot cuts downtime to minutes by starting the VM directly from the backup repository
- The backup repository folder contains all the information needed to restore data. In case of disaster recovery, just install Nakivo on any new Windows machine, add the existing repository and you have access to all backups, no further configuration is required.
The overall impression is very good. However, some aspects could be improved:
- Tape backup is somewhat rudimentary.
- Compression and data deduplication are okay, but they could be improved. For the same set of VMs, the vSphere Data Protection repository is half the size of the Nakivo repository.
Nakivo is an easy-to-use, robust and cost-effective backup solution. I highly recommend it.
Nakivo a great tool for backup
Also their support is fantastic, each time I had issues it was resolved in less than 8hours.
Already had to restore some virtual machines, and thanks to Nakivo i was able to do it easly.
