WireGuard VPN Gateway on Ubuntu is a secure, lightweight, and high-performance VPN solution designed for organizations, developers, IT administrators, and businesses that require secure remote connectivity on AWS.
This Amazon Machine Image (AMI) provides a production-ready WireGuard VPN server with automatic first-boot provisioning. When an EC2 instance is launched from this AMI, unique server cryptographic keys are generated automatically, the VPN interface is configured, and the service is started without requiring manual server setup.
The solution simplifies VPN deployment by providing secure defaults, automated configuration, and easy client management. Administrators can quickly create VPN users using the included client management utility, which automatically generates client configuration files and QR codes for mobile devices.

First Boot Behavior
When a new EC2 instance is launched from this AMI, the initialization process automatically performs the following tasks:
- Generates unique WireGuard server keys
- Creates the WireGuard server configuration
- Configures the VPN interface
- Starts the WireGuard service
- Detects the instance public IP address
- Prepares the server for client provisioning
No manual server configuration is required before creating VPN clients.
Client Management
Create a new VPN client by running:
sudo wg-add-client
The utility automatically generates client keys, updates the server configuration, creates the client configuration file, and displays a QR code for easy configuration on supported WireGuard client applications.
Security
This AMI follows AWS and Linux security best practices by generating unique server keys for every deployment, using modern WireGuard cryptography, avoiding shared credentials between instances, and preparing each launched instance with a fresh VPN configuration.

Getting Started
- Subscribe to the product through AWS Marketplace.
- Launch an EC2 instance from the subscribed AMI.
- Ensure the security group allows:
- SSH (TCP 22) for administration
- WireGuard VPN (UDP 51820)
- Connect to the instance using SSH: ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>
- Verify that WireGuard has been configured automatically during the first boot: sudo systemctl status wg-quick@wg0
- Create a new VPN client: sudo wg-add-client <client-name>
- The client configuration file and QR code are generated automatically. Import the configuration into the WireGuard client application on your desktop or mobile device.
- Connect the client to establish a secure VPN connection.
