You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run. The ten dimensions match different instance types, so pricing scales with the compute power you choose. The t2 sizes (micro, small, medium, large) offer burstable compute for lighter workloads. The m3.medium, m4.large, m4.xlarge, and m4.2xlarge sizes provide general-purpose balance across CPU and memory. The c4.large and c4.xlarge sizes focus on compute. Larger instances cost more per hour. The software stack is identical across all sizes, so your choice affects capacity and hourly rate only.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for each instance type?
One unit is one running EC2 instance of that size for one hour. The rate bundles the pre-configured Joomla software stack with the compute capacity of that instance type. Larger instance types deliver more CPU and memory per hour. You launch one instance per subscription and pay for each hour it runs.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance runs. A stopped instance does not accrue software fees. However, AWS may still bill you for underlying resources like storage and any allocated Elastic IP. To fully stop all charges, terminate the instance.
How do I move to a different instance size if my traffic grows?
You are not locked to one size. Stop the instance, change its instance type in the AWS Console, and restart it. Billing then switches to the new size's hourly rate. The Joomla stack stays the same across all sizes, so only capacity and the hourly rate change.
