You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you run OPAL on. Pricing is usage-based, so charges accrue while your instance is active. The dimensions map to different Amazon EC2 instance families and sizes, spanning general-purpose (m3, m4, m5zn), memory-optimized (r4, r5), and high-memory (x1e) types. Within each family, hourly cost scales with the instance size, from smaller (large, xlarge) up to larger configurations (16xlarge, 32xlarge, metal). You choose the instance that fits your workload, and no upfront commitment applies.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get for the hourly charge, and what does OPAL still need me to supply?
The hourly charge covers running the OPAL software on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. You still need an active AWS account and your own Large Language Model provider API key. OPAL connects to LLM providers you register, so those provider fees are separate from the hourly instance cost.
Am I charged when my OPAL instance is stopped or paused?
Hourly software charges accrue only while your instance runs. A stopped instance does not incur the OPAL hourly rate. Note that underlying AWS storage for a stopped instance may still bill separately through AWS. To halt software charges, stop or terminate the instance.
How does hourly cost change if I move OPAL to a larger instance?
Cost is metered per running instance-hour for the instance you run. Moving to a memory-optimized or high-memory type, or a size like 16xlarge or metal, raises the hourly rate. You launch one instance at a time, so cost reflects that single instance's size and running hours.
