Overview
The AWS Outposts LocalBoot AMI enables EC2 instances to utilize iSCSI-backed storage volumes as primary boot disks, allowing seamless integration with external storage providers while maintaining faster startup times than traditional SANboot configurations.
This solution preconfigures instances with persistent iSCSI mappings that mount external OS volumes as native local disks, combining the performance of local storage with enterprise benefits like snapshots and replication.
Unlike iSCSI SANboot, LocalBoot stores the bootloader and kernel on local disk while mounting the root filesystem from an iSCSI volume after boot initialization, supporting read-only volumes without requiring network writes.
Highlights
- Integrate external enterprise storage with EC2 instances while maintaining local disk speeds
- Enable read-only root filesystem mounting from iSCSI storage while keeping critical boot components local
