Ubuntu 26.04 LTS images for EKS are based on the official Minimal Ubuntu images published by Canonical, and include everything you need to attach instances to your EKS nodes. They have been built specifically for the EKS service, therefore are not intended as general OS images.
Ubuntu is free and will always be, with the option to access additional security features, management tools and technical support when you need it through additional commercial offerings from Canonical.
You can upgrade to Ubuntu Pro to get enhanced security features, compliance and uptime and grant your cluster the capability to run an unlimited number of Ubuntu Pro containers.

Your hourly cost scales with the size and family you choose; larger instances cost more per hour. You run this Ubuntu image on EKS worker nodes and pick the instance type that fits your workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hourly unit maps to one running Arm-based EC2 instance type you select. This listing's Ubuntu image is free, so the software adds no charge. You pay the standard AWS hourly rate for the chosen instance while it runs. Each instance you launch is metered separately.
Hourly charges apply only while an instance runs. Stopped instances stop accruing hourly charges, though attached storage may still incur AWS fees. When your EKS worker pools scale down, the removed nodes no longer bill by the hour. Scaling back up resumes hourly charges on active nodes.
Billing stays per hour regardless of instance type. Moving to a larger size within the same family, or to a different family, changes the hourly rate you pay. Larger instances cost more per hour. The Ubuntu software remains free across every instance type, so only the AWS compute rate shifts.

You can deploy Ubuntu EKS clusters using eksctl, launch templates, CloudFormation templates and other mechanisms. The default username for SSH access is ubuntu, and the default port is 22. You can connect to the instance either by opening port 22 in your security group or by using EC2 Instance Connect.
