You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run this software on. The software price is the same across dimensions; what changes is the compute size you select. Options span burstable T-family instances (t2, t3, t3a) for lighter or variable workloads, and M-family instances (m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5ad, m5dn) for steady general-purpose use. Sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare-metal instances. Larger instances add more CPU and memory, so your hourly cost rises with the capacity you choose.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly software charge cover on each instance type?
The charge covers the Rocket.Chat software running on your chosen EC2 instance. It is a ready-to-run image that starts the chat service automatically when the VM boots. The hourly rate you pay reflects the compute size you select, plus the separate underlying AWS infrastructure fees.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges meter running instance-hours. A fully stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes. To pause billing for the software, stop the VM when it is not in use.
How do I move to a larger instance size as my team grows?
You select a size at launch and pay that hourly rate. To scale, you launch or migrate to a different instance type from the list. Larger instances add CPU and memory for more users. Review the Rocket.Chat hardware requirements before choosing a size for your workload.
