Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for each running instance, with no upfront commitment. The rate depends on the EC2 instance type you launch. Options span general-purpose (m and t families), compute-optimized (c families), memory-optimized (r and x families), storage-optimized (d and i families), and accelerated computing (g, p, inf, trn, and vt families). Sizes range from nano and micro up to metal and multi-terabyte instances. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or storage carry higher hourly rates. You choose the type that fits your workload, and billing stops when you stop the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You get a running EC2 instance built from a hardened Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 image with STIG security settings applied. The rate covers the software license for that image. The instance type you pick sets the CPU, memory, and storage available, and the hourly rate.
Software charges apply per hour only while an instance runs. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops. Stopped instances may still incur separate AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the image license meters running time only.
