You pay by the hour for Hardened RHEL 9 running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. The software charge is billed per running hour, and it varies by the instance you select. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, from small burstable options like t2.nano up to large memory, compute, storage, and accelerated instances such as x2iedn.metal or p5.48xlarge. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware carry higher hourly rates. You choose the instance that fits your workload and pay only for the hours you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly software charge cover on Hardened RHEL 9?
The hourly rate covers the Hardened RHEL 9 machine image, which comes pre-updated for a minimal install. You pay this software charge for each hour the instance runs. AWS charges the underlying EC2 compute and storage separately. The rate you pay depends on the EC2 instance type you launch.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when my instance is stopped?
The software charge meters running hours only. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume while the instance is stopped, but that is separate from the software license.
Does the hourly rate change if I switch to a different EC2 instance type?
Yes. Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. If you resize from a small burstable option to a larger compute, memory, storage, or accelerated instance, the new type's rate applies. You pay the rate tied to whatever instance is running at the time.
