See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the Hardened RHEL 9 image, billed per running instance. Each dimension maps to one specific EC2 instance type, so your rate follows the instance you launch. Options span general-purpose (m and t families), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r and x), storage (d, i, h), and accelerated (g, p, inf, trn, vt) families, plus large-memory (u) and bare-metal choices. Larger instance sizes carry higher hourly rates. The software charge applies on top of standard AWS infrastructure costs, and you can stop and start instances to control usage.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does each hourly dimension actually charge me for?
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. You pay the software rate for every hour that instance runs. The rate reflects the size and family you launch, from small shared instances to large bare-metal machines. Counting is per running instance, per hour.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay standard AWS costs, such as attached storage, while the instance is stopped. Restarting the instance resumes the hourly software charge.
Does the software charge include the underlying AWS compute cost?
No. The hourly rate shown covers the Hardened RHEL 9 software only. Standard AWS infrastructure charges for the EC2 instance, storage, and data transfer apply separately. Your total cost combines the software fee and the AWS resource fees for the same running hours.
