Apache Kafka is an open-source distributed event streaming platform used by thousands of companies for high-performance data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration, and mission-critical applications.
Servers: Kafka is run as a cluster of one or more servers that can span multiple datacenters or cloud regions. Some of these servers form the storage layer, called the brokers. Other servers run Kafka Connect to continuously import and export data as event streams to integrate Kafka with your existing systems such as relational databases as well as other Kafka clusters. A Kafka cluster is highly scalable and fault-tolerant.
Clients: They allow you to write distributed applications and microservices that read, write, and process streams of events in parallel, at scale, and in a fault-tolerant manner even in the case of network problems or VM failures. You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you choose to run this Kafka event streaming server on Ubuntu 24.04. Pricing scales with the compute size you select. Each dimension maps to one AWS instance type, from small burstable options like t2.nano and t3.micro up to large memory-, compute-, storage-, GPU-, and metal-optimized instances such as x1e.32xlarge, u-24tb1.metal, and p4d.24xlarge. Larger instances carry more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware and bill at a higher hourly rate. You are charged only for the hours each instance runs, plus vendor support.

What do I get for the hourly rate on each instance type?
Each dimension maps to one AWS EC2 instance type running the Kafka event streaming server on Ubuntu 24.04. The rate covers that instance's CPU, memory, and any specialized hardware, plus vendor support. You select one instance type; its size sets the hourly compute you receive.
Am I charged the hourly rate when my instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running hours only. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume may still apply while the instance is stopped. You pay the software rate only for hours the instance actually runs.
Does cost change automatically if I switch to a bigger instance type?
No automatic change happens. Each instance type is a separate hourly rate you choose at launch. To move to a larger memory-, compute-, storage-, GPU-, or metal-optimized type, you deploy on that instance type. Your hourly charge then reflects the rate for the type you run.
