AWS Migration and Modernization: Assess, Migrate, Modernize, Optimize

VSO’s end-to-end AWS migration and modernization service covers eight phases, scoped to as much or as little of the journey as you need.

Discovery and assessment. In-depth analysis of your existing infrastructure using AWS Application Discovery Service to identify dependencies, performance bottlenecks, and migration challenges, and to assess each workload’s readiness and its optimal migration path. Where a business case is needed first, AWS Migration Evaluator builds the total cost of ownership comparison. Customers who have not yet been through the AWS-led Migration Readiness Assessment start with VSO’s readiness workshop, which prepares for it and carries its findings into this phase. Migration planning and design. A tailored migration plan built on your business requirements and AWS best practices, with wave grouping and prioritization tracked in AWS Migration Hub, migration paths informed by Migration Hub Strategy Recommendations, and a target architecture designed for scale, availability, security, and cost. Data and application migration. Server migration with AWS Application Migration Service, database migration with AWS Database Migration Service, and bulk file and storage transfer with AWS DataSync, executed in sprints with customer agreement on the portfolio before each wave. Modernization. Not every workload should move as-is. For applications the assessment marks as modernize rather than rehost, VSO containerizes onto Amazon EKS or Amazon ECS, moves commercial and self-managed databases to Amazon Aurora or Amazon RDS, and retires the licensing and operational overhead that came with them. VMware and .NET estates use AWS Transform, AWS’s agentic modernization service, to accelerate the work. Infrastructure deployment and configuration. Deployment of the Amazon VPC, subnet, security group, and account structure the target state requires, into an AWS Control Tower landing zone that VSO builds or that you already operate, defined as code in AWS CloudFormation or the AWS CDK so the environment is consistent, versioned, and repeatable. Testing and validation. Functional equivalence and performance benchmark testing on migrated workloads, with user acceptance testing and issue resolution before cutover, so post-migration surprises stay rare. Optimization and cost management. A post-migration assessment against all six pillars of the AWS Well-Architected Framework, including Sustainability, plus cost monitoring and governance through AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Budgets, and AWS Cost Anomaly Detection. Post-migration support and training. Ongoing support through the transition, plus knowledge transfer sessions so your team can operate what was built. Customers who prefer to hand operations over entirely can move to VSO managed cloud operations.
