Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) enables admins to deploy the latest Microsoft product updates to your computers and servers on your network both in AWS and on-premise.
WSUS server provides features that you can use to manage and distribute updates through a management console. A WSUS server can also be the update source for other WSUS servers within your organization. The WSUS server that acts as an update source is called an upstream server. In a WSUS implementation, at least one WSUS server on your network must be able to connect to Microsoft Update to get available update information.

You pay by the hour for WSUS Server 2022 running on Windows Server, and the rate depends on the EC2 instance type you choose. Each dimension maps to one AWS instance size, from small general-purpose types up to large memory-, compute-, storage-, and accelerated-compute options. There are no fixed tiers or upfront commitments. Your cost scales with the size and family of the instance you run, so you select the instance that fits your workload. Software charges accrue only while the instance runs, alongside standard AWS infrastructure fees.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit map to, and how is it counted?
Each dimension maps to one AWS EC2 instance type running the WSUS software. You pay per hour for each running instance of the size you pick. The rate reflects that instance's family and size. Running two instances bills two separate hourly charges at the matching rate.
Am I charged for the WSUS software when the instance is stopped?
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. A stopped instance stops the hourly software charge. Standard AWS storage fees for the attached volume may still apply while the instance is stopped, since your data remains saved for later restart.
Does WSUS Server support scaling as my number of client computers grows?
WSUS servers can scale out to handle any number of clients, and you can add servers in a hierarchy where one acts as an upstream update source. To handle more clients, you select a larger instance type or run additional instances. Each running instance bills separately at its own hourly rate.
