Web CFD Direct From the Cloud (CFDDFC) is a complete platform providing OpenFOAM (open source computational fluid dynamics) and supporting software running a long-term support (LTS) version of Ubuntu Linux. Users connect to an instance with a remote desktop from a web browser, and by SSH. OpenFOAM (Open Field Operation and Manipulation) is a free, open source CFD software package which has a large user base across most areas of engineering and science, from both commercial and academic organizations. OpenFOAM has an extensive range of features to solve anything from complex fluid flows involving chemical reactions, turbulence and heat transfer, to solid dynamics and electromagnetics. It includes tools for meshing, notably snappyHexMesh, a parallelized mesher for complex CAD geometries, and for pre- and post-processing. Almost everything (including meshing, and pre- and post-processing) runs in parallel as standard, enabling users to take full advantage of computer hardware at their disposal.

You pay an hourly software fee for each hour a virtual server runs, billed on top of separate AWS EC2 charges. The dimensions map to specific EC2 instance types, all compute-optimized or HPC-optimized families with Intel or AMD processors. Pricing scales with the instance size you choose, from small options up to large multi-core and bare-metal instances. Larger instances carry more cores and higher hourly rates. There are no upfront commitments or minimum spend. You can run a single instance or cluster several instances together for larger workloads.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of the software fee actually cover on a chosen instance type?
Each dimension maps to one running EC2 instance of that type. The hourly software fee applies for every hour the instance runs, billed alongside separate AWS charges for the instance, storage, and data transfer. A fraction of an hour is billed as a whole hour under older billing, now per-second.
Am I charged the software fee when an instance is stopped or terminated?
The software fee meters running time only. When you terminate an instance, the software charge stops. Stopped instances do not run, so no software fee accrues, though underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes may continue until the storage is released.
How does running a cluster of instances affect my total software charges?
Each instance in a cluster runs its own image and carries its own hourly software fee. Charges add up across all running instances. A single instance runs on up to 96 cores; clustering several instances lets you reach 1000 cores or more, with fees scaling by instance count and type.
