    Overview

HopToDesk Private Network gives your organization its own connection path for HopToDesk remote support and remote access. The image runs the HopToDesk signal server, which lets your devices find each other, and a relay server, which carries sessions when a direct connection is not possible. Your devices register only with your server, relayed traffic stays in the AWS region you choose, and session content is encrypted end to end, so neither server can read it. Setup takes a few minutes: launch, open the listed ports, and give your apps the network settings shown on the server. Signal server updates are signed and install nightly, and Debian security updates install automatically.

    Highlights

    • Your own signal server and relay: HopToDesk devices find each other and connect through your server, not the public network.
    • Your AWS region: choose where connection traffic runs, for data residency and audits.
    • Works with the HopToDesk dashboard: push the network to all your devices at once and keep using unattended access, file transfer and the rest of HopToDesk. The dashboard is a separate HopToDesk service, with a European Union region.

    Dimensions summary

This listing runs the HopToDesk software at no license charge, so your cost comes only from the AWS EC2 instance you choose to host it. Each dimension is a different EC2 instance size, billed hourly. The t3.micro, t3.small, t3a.micro, t3a.small, and t3a.medium options cover lighter workloads. The m6i.large and m7i.large options cover larger ones. You pick the instance that matches your server needs, and your bill scales with the instance size and the hours you run it.

    Top-of-mind questions for buyers

You pay only for the AWS EC2 instance that hosts the HopToDesk network. Each dimension is an instance size billed per hour. The software license adds no charge on top. Your cost reflects which instance you pick and how many hours it runs.
Hourly charges accrue only while the instance runs. A stopped instance stops software hourly charges. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume while stopped. Billing resumes when you start the instance again.
The instance runs the signal server that helps devices find each other and set up sessions. Sessions are encrypted end to end. Relay traffic can use the default relay or your own server. Running your own relay needs separate infrastructure, which is not part of this instance charge.

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Version release notes

Version 13 moves to Debian 13 and the current HopToDesk signal server, the same one that runs the public HopToDesk network. It adds a built-in relay server, so sessions still connect when a direct connection is not possible. The signal server updates itself each night with signed releases (you can turn this off), and Debian security updates install automatically. The network settings for your apps are created on first boot and shown when you sign in over SSH.

    Additional details

    Usage instructions

    1. Launch the instance and give it an Elastic IP, so its address does not change.
    2. Use the recommended security group, or open these inbound ports: TCP 80, TCP and UDP 3478, TCP and UDP 49152 to 65535, and TCP 22 from your own address only.
    3. Sign in over SSH as admin. The welcome message shows the network settings (an api.json) for your HopToDesk apps. They are also in /etc/hopsignal/api.json, and in the instance's system log after the first boot.
    4. Point your HopToDesk apps at this server. Either save the api.json in the HopToDesk configuration folder on each computer, or host it at a web address and enter that address under Choose Network > Custom Network Settings. With the HopToDesk dashboard you can push the settings to every device from Network Settings. Guide: https://www.hoptodesk.com/on-premises
    5. Optional: to approve signal server updates yourself, see Updates below.

    Security and data

    • Session content (screens, files, keyboard and mouse input, chat) is encrypted end to end between the two HopToDesk apps. The key exchange combines X25519 with the post-quantum ML-KEM-768, and session data is encrypted with XSalsa20-Poly1305. This server never holds the session keys, so it cannot read a session.
    • The signal server only helps devices find each other. For that it sees each device's HopToDesk ID and network address, keeps them in memory while the device is online, and does not save them. The connection to it on port 80 carries IDs and network addresses only, never session content.
    • The relay passes encrypted session data between two devices when they cannot connect directly. Its log on this server records relay connections (network addresses and times), not content.
    • The relay refuses to connect to private address ranges, so it cannot be used to reach your internal network.
    • Each server creates its own relay password and server credentials on first boot. SSH accepts keys only, with password and root login turned off.
    • Where data lives: device matching and relay traffic stay on this server, in the AWS region you choose. If you also use the HopToDesk dashboard, it is a separate HopToDesk service that holds your account and device list; choose its European Union region (eu.dashboard.hoptodesk.com) to keep that data in the EU. This server works with or without the dashboard.
    • The only connection from this server to HopToDesk is the nightly update check, a download from <www.hoptodesk.com >. Turning automatic updates off stops it.

    Updates

    • Each night, between 03:00 and 05:00 server time, the server checks for a new signal server version. It installs it only if the file is signed by HopToDesk, and puts the previous version back if the new one does not start.
    • To approve updates yourself, turn the nightly check off with sudo systemctl disable --now hopsignal-update.timer, and update when you choose with sudo /usr/local/lib/hopsignal/update.sh.
    • Debian security updates install automatically. Kernel updates take effect when you restart the instance.

Outstanding Remote Support with First-Class Support and Easy-to-Use Features

    Reviewed on Aug 01, 2026
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
HopToDesk is an outstanding piece of software. After TeamViewer deactivated our perpetual license, we started looking for a new remote support solution. We tested everything we could find, but every alternative came with at least one significant drawback.

We eventually came across HopToDesk through a slightly older YouTube video ().

Even with its extensive range of features, the software is remarkably easy to use and delivers excellent performance. The most important features for us are fully automated video recording of all sessions, exporting session durations, and the ability to create branded modules for our customers.

We also need to connect to computers where other team members are already working, or where another user may be connected via RDP, and HopToDesk handles all of this without any issues.

The ability to draw directly on the screen and take screenshots adds extra functionality that is genuinely useful in day-to-day support.

Reliable, easy-to-reach support is just as important to us. At the beginning, we submitted several minor suggestions for improvement, and the support team implemented every one of them within 24 hours.

For us, HopToDesk is an excellent product with first-class support. On top of that, it is an open-source solution that is also partly available free of charge.
