Deploy your containerized workloads in a threat-resistant environment by leveraging Chainguard container hosts, backed by our CVE remediation SLA, helping you eliminate developer toil and enabling your team to focus on innovation instead of patching vulnerabilities. These minimal, low-to-zero-CVE container hosts are built entirely from source in Chainguard's SLSA Level 2 infrastructure. These container hosts include only those components required to run as a container host, along with an optimized kernel.
Run your containerized workloads on a foundation that is secure by default, eliminating the endless cycle of CVE patching and remediation that drains your team's time and resources.
Why Chainguard Container Hosts?
Secure base from day one: Minimal VM images built entirely from source in our SLSA Level 2 environment include only essential components, eliminating bloat and vulnerabilities
Stop chasing CVEs: No more valuable engineering time spent on emergency patching, security advisories, or remediation tickets, allowing your teams to focus on building features, not fixing CVEs.

Try this product free for 30 days according to the free trial terms set by the vendor. Usage-based pricing is in effect for usage beyond the free trial terms. Your free trial gets automatically converted to a paid subscription when the trial ends, but may be canceled any time before that.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for a Container Host VM that runs your containerized workloads on EKS. Each pricing line maps to a specific EC2 instance type, from small general-purpose sizes to large compute, memory, storage, and GPU-focused machines. Billing scales with the instance type you choose and the hours it runs. Larger or more specialized instances carry higher hourly rates. You are not locked into a term commitment; charges accrue only while an instance runs. Pick the instance type that fits your workload's compute, memory, or accelerator needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly pricing line actually run on my infrastructure?
Each line maps to a specific EC2 instance type running a Container Host VM. This is a minimal, hardened operating system image built to run your containers on EKS. You pay the software rate for the instance type you launch, billed per hour that instance runs.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or powered off?
The software charge meters running hours only. A fully stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage or other resources may still bill separately. Charges resume when you start the instance again. There is no term commitment tying you to ongoing fees.
Do I need Chainguard Containers to use this Container Host VM?
No. The Container Host VM works standalone with standard container runtimes and orchestration systems like Kubernetes. Pairing it with hardened container images adds protection across the full stack, but the host VM alone runs your containerized workloads on the chosen EC2 instance.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Usage instructions
This AMI is intended for Amazon EKS worker nodes (managed node groups or self-managed node groups). Deploy it by creating a new Amazon EKS cluster or node group using eksctl and following the documentation for custom AMI support:
Retrieve the AMI ID for your region, for example for us-east-1:
Configure eksctl to use the Chainguard Container Host AMI by setting "amiFamily: AmazonLinux2023" and "ami: ami-01234567" for the node group in the configuration file. Replace the AMI ID with the one retrieved in step 1.
If you enabled SSH access via eksctl, you can connect to the instances in your node group as "ec2-user".
AWS Support is a one-on-one, fast-response support channel that is staffed 24x7x365 with experienced and technical support engineers. The service helps customers of all sizes and technical abilities to successfully utilize the products and features provided by Amazon Web Services.
