If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this container host on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so your rate depends on the compute, memory, and family you choose. General-purpose (m-series), compute-optimized (c-series), memory-optimized (r-series and x-series), storage-optimized (d and i-series), and accelerated (g, p, inf, f) families are all covered. Larger sizes within a family carry higher hourly rates. You add the software cost on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges. This build targets EKS 1.32 on x86_64 with FIPS-validated cryptography.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit cover, and how is it counted?
You pay per instance-hour for the EC2 instance running this container host. One unit equals one hour that a chosen instance size runs. Each running instance meters separately, so ten instances of the same size bill ten times the hourly rate for that dimension.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or powered off?
The software charge meters running instance-hours. A fully stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS storage or reserved resources may still bill separately through AWS. Only running time counts toward this listing's hourly software cost.
What does this build include, and does it need Chainguard Containers to run?
This build is a minimal container host image for EKS 1.32 on x86_64 with FIPS-validated cryptography. It runs containers using standard runtimes and orchestration without requiring separate container images from the same vendor. It rebuilds from source with a CVE remediation SLA of 7 days for critical and 14 for others.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Usage instructions
This AMI is intended for Amazon EKS worker nodes (managed node groups or self-managed node groups). Deploy it by creating a new Amazon EKS cluster or node group using eksctl and following the documentation for custom AMI support:
Retrieve the AMI ID for your region, for example for us-east-1:
Configure eksctl to use the Chainguard Container Host AMI by setting "amiFamily: AmazonLinux2023" and "ami: ami-01234567" for the node group in the configuration file. Replace the AMI ID with the one retrieved in step 1.
If you enabled SSH access via eksctl, you can connect to the instances in your node group as "ec2-user".
AWS Support is a one-on-one, fast-response support channel that is staffed 24x7x365 with experienced and technical support engineers. The service helps customers of all sizes and technical abilities to successfully utilize the products and features provided by Amazon Web Services.
