You pay by the hour for each running instance, with the software fee tied to the EC2 instance type you launch. Pricing scales with instance size across several families. Burstable t2 and t3a types cover light or variable workloads. The m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, m5n, m5zn, m6a, and m7a families offer general-purpose sizing, while r3 and c3 add memory- and compute-focused options. Within each family, hourly cost rises as you move to larger sizes. You run one Windows AMI with Apache Kafka pre-installed and choose the instance that fits your throughput needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit cover for this listing?
You pay per hour for each running EC2 instance of the type you launch. One unit equals one hour of a single instance running the Windows AMI with Apache Kafka pre-installed. Each instance you start bills separately, so two instances accrue two hourly software charges at once.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or the Kafka service is not sending messages?
The hourly software fee meters running instance time, not message volume. A stopped instance does not accrue the software charge. A running instance bills each hour even when idle with no messages flowing. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply while the instance is stopped.
How do I raise capacity, and does moving to a larger instance change my rate?
You scale by launching a different instance type. Larger sizes within a family carry a higher hourly rate. This is a manual choice at launch, not automatic. You can stop one instance and start another size, but each size bills at its own listed hourly rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
