    WHAT IS APACHE NIFI

    Apache NiFi is an open-source dataflow automation and data integration server: it moves, routes, transforms and enriches data between systems, and it does it through a live browser canvas rather than code. It is a Java application running on a single JVM, built on flow-based programming - you drag processors onto a canvas, connect them into a flow, and NiFi handles queuing, back-pressure, retries and prioritisation between each step. This image ships more than 400 processors across 118 extension bundles: local and remote files, SFTP, HTTP and REST, JDBC databases, Kafka, MQTT, syslog, email, object storage, plus record-oriented readers and writers for JSON, Avro, CSV, XML and Parquet. Every change is versioned, and full data provenance records where each piece of data came from, what was done to it and where it went. NiFi persists flows, queued data, content and provenance on local disk; no external database is required. Apache-2.0 license, no vendor lock-in.

    WHAT THIS AMI ADDS

    Security hardening:

    • No credentials to hunt for - NiFi would generate a random UUID username and password on first start and print them only to an application log; this image instead generates a 24-character password for the "admin" account at first launch and writes it to /root/nifi-credentials.txt (mode 600)
    • Per-instance encryption key for sensitive flow properties - the passwords and tokens you enter into processors are encrypted with a key unique to your instance, so no two instances share a secret
    • NiFi bound to 127.0.0.1:8443 (loopback only); nginx terminates TLS on port 443 and reverse-proxies to it - the application port is never exposed
    • Anonymous access disabled - every request to the canvas and the REST API is authenticated
    • The web address is re-derived on every boot, so the interface keeps working after a stop/start changes the instance's public address
    • certbot pre-installed - one command swaps the self-signed certificate for a CA-signed one
    • JVM heap auto-sized to the instance RAM at first launch
    • Flow definition, queued data, content and provenance stored under /var/lib/nifi, separate from the application directory, so an upgrade does not touch your data
    • Runs as a non-root nifi system user with UMask 0027
    • UFW firewall pre-configured (only ports 22 and 443 open)
    • CVE scan - every image is scanned for vulnerabilities before release

    You pay per hour the EC2 instance runs the hardened Apache NiFi image. A fully stopped instance stops accruing software charges. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software meter counts running time only.
    Every size ships the same hardened Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base with CIS Level 1 benchmarks applied. Each includes CVE scanning, a software bill of materials, and a conformance report bundled inside. Unique credentials generate at first boot. The size you pick changes compute and memory, not these features.
    Sizes do not scale automatically. To change compute or memory, you launch a new instance using a different size, such as moving from t3.large to m6i.xlarge. The hourly rate then matches the size you selected. Your workload does not shift between sizes on its own.

    Usage instructions

    1. Launch instance (t3.large recommended and minimum)
    2. Open Security Group - allow TCP 443 from your IP
    3. SSH: ssh -i key.pem ubuntu@<PUBLIC_IP>
    4. Read the generated login: sudo cat /root/nifi-credentials.txt
    5. Open https://<PUBLIC_IP>/nifi/ in your browser - accept the self-signed certificate warning. First launch takes 3-6 minutes while the extension bundles are unpacked; until the service is ready the page shows a loading screen that refreshes itself.
    6. Sign in as "admin" with the password from step 4.
    7. Drag a processor from the toolbar onto the canvas, connect it to a second processor, then start the flow - the status bar shows data moving between them, and right-clicking a connection lets you inspect the queued data and its provenance.

    NiFi is bound to 127.0.0.1:8443; nginx terminates TLS on port 443 and reverse-proxies to it. The administrator password and the encryption key for sensitive flow properties are generated uniquely per instance at first launch and saved to /root/nifi-credentials.txt.

    Change the administrator password with: sudo systemctl stop nifi sudo runuser -u nifi -- env NIFI_OVERRIDE_NIFIENV=true NIFI_HOME=/opt/nifi
    /opt/nifi/bin/nifi.sh set-single-user-credentials admin <new-password> sudo systemctl start nifi

    Flows, queued data, content and provenance are stored under /var/lib/nifi and survive a reboot.

    Restrict Security Group port 443 to your own IP until you have signed in and changed the administrator password.

    Replace the self-signed TLS certificate with a CA-signed certificate for production use: sudo certbot --nginx -d yourdomain.com
