About 10 minutes after launching the Chef Automate AMI, you can access the application via a browser at https://<public_dns-name>/. Credential are provided from the instance dashboard, or you can shell into the instance to get your unique login credentials in ~/automate-credentials.toml. What do you like best about the product?
What I like best about Progress Chef is how it makes infrastructure automation both reliable and flexible. It allows teams to define configurations as code, which means consistency across environments and fewer manual errors. I also appreciate its strong community support and integrations, which make it easier to scale and adapt to different platforms. In short, Chef helps me deliver stable systems faster while keeping everything auditable and secure.
What do you dislike about the product?
One drawback of Progress Chef is that the learning curve can be steep, especially for newcomers who aren’t familiar with Ruby or infrastructure-as-code concepts. It also requires careful management to avoid overly complex cookbooks, which can become difficult to maintain at scale. While these challenges exist, they’re manageable with good practices and documentation, and the benefits of automation usually outweigh the initial effort.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Progress Chef is solving the problem of inconsistent and manual infrastructure management. By turning configurations into code, it ensures that environments are reproducible and reliable, which reduces human error and saves time. It also addresses scalability challenges by allowing automation across large fleets of servers. What do you like best about the product?
I like Progress Chef for its ability to automate infrastructure management while ensuring consistency across all servers. Instead of configuring systems manually, I appreciate that you can define the desired state in code and Chef applies it manually. Once properly implemented, it's a powerful and reliable tool for automating infrastructure at scale. I also value the shift from Puppet to Progress Chef for improving automation, standardizing server configurations, and better supporting infrastructure as code.

I find setting up and managing the Chef server complex for our smaller environments. However, once it's properly implemented, it's a powerful and reliable tool for automating infrastructure at scale.

What do you like best about the product?
I like Progress Chef because it provides a clear view of the VMs environment, making it easy to monitor VM status. The interface is simple and user-friendly, and the dashboard gives me instant visibility into the health of our VM environment without having to manually check each VM individually. This improves operational efficiency and gives me confidence that the environment is running as expected.
What do you dislike about the product?
The searching of multiple VMs at the same time would help us identify the group VMs we want at that specific time. And configuring alerts so the critical VM failures or missing nodes can be quickly identified. The search functionality would make it easier to locate a group of VMs I’m looking for, without me having to download the JSON/CSV file and filter. For alerts, having a configurable notification for critical events would allow VM owners/teams to respond more quickly before issues arise.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Progress Chef to easily monitor VM status, identify missing or failed nodes, and improve operational efficiency without manual checks.

What do you like best about the product?
I use Progress Chef to streamline server configuration management, which eliminates manual work and keeps our infrastructure consistent from development through production. I like that Progress Chef does the setup work for me and keeps all servers the same. It also makes compliance checks easier. I appreciate that it makes audits easier and keeps everything consistent.
What do you dislike about the product?
I find the learning curve hard for new users, and the documentation is confusing. Setting it up at the start also takes a long time. The initial setup of Progress Chef was pretty complex. There’s a lot to configure with the server and workstations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
