One unit is one hour that a single instance runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.7. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. You are charged for every hour that instance is running, counted per instance. Running two instances of the same type doubles the hourly charge.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
The software charge meters running hours only. A stopped or terminated instance does not accrue this hourly software fee. Note that underlying AWS storage or other AWS resources may still incur separate AWS charges while the instance is stopped.
If I switch to a different instance type, how does my bill change?
Each instance type has its own hourly rate tied to its size and compute family. Larger sizes within a family carry higher rates. When you launch a different type, that type's rate applies for its running hours. Switching is manual — you choose which instance to run.
