Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for their attached volumes, but those are separate from the software licence, which bills active running time.
Does running a bigger instance type raise my software cost?
Yes. Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. Moving from a t2 or t3 size up to an m5 or larger family, through 24xlarge and metal, raises the hourly charge as compute, memory, and network capacity increase. You control cost by choosing the size that fits your workload.
