Dimensions summary
You pay for this service based on usage, with two separate meters that combine into your bill. The first meter charges for each vCPU deployed per hour, so compute costs scale with the deployment size you select. The second meter charges for allocated storage per hour, billed in 10 GB chunks, so storage costs scale as you reserve more space. These two dimensions are independent. Your total reflects both the compute capacity running and the storage you allocate. Since billing is hourly, costs track how long your deployment stays active and how much you provision.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You choose a deployment size when creating the service. That size sets how many vCPUs run in your deployment. Each running vCPU meters one unit per hour. If you select a size with more vCPUs, more units accrue each hour the deployment stays active.
Storage is billed in 10 GB chunks per hour. You pay for space you reserve, not just what your JSON documents currently fill. As you import more files and collections and allocate more space, the count of 10 GB chunks rises, and your hourly storage charge scales with it.
Both meters bill independently and add together on one invoice. Compute charges track the vCPU count in your chosen deployment size. Storage charges track allocated 10 GB chunks. Compute tends to dominate for larger deployment sizes, while storage grows as you import and reserve space for more document collections.

What do you like best about the product?
I like that iris keeps all in one place like data storage integration and API's.
The security is built in and being able to use object script and SQL makes development more flexible and it performs very well on heavy load especially when dealing with healthcare data.

The learning curve is a bit difficult because it has a lot of features and can be difficult for a beginner to understand without a senior or trainer.

Straightforward Data Manipulation with Elegant SQL Joins

What do you like best about the product?
What I like best is how straightforward data manipulation is. I love using simple commands to open a database register, like %Open, or accessing records by index using IdxUserNameOpen. On top of that, writing implicit joins using the -> operator in SQL queries is hands down the most elegant way to query data.
What do you dislike about the product?
The license model is a bit complicated. It's not always simple to understand or accurately measure how licensing is consumed in real-world scenarios.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The biggest benefit I found in IRIS is that I don't need multiple databases anymore—one for caching, another for structured data, and a separate one for columnar values. Everything is handled in one single place.

What do you like best about the product?
I really like the fluency of InterSystems IRIS and its unique global features. It's the first time I've used a technology with this capability, and I find it incredibly interesting. I enjoy how globals can be modified into tables, which makes them versatile and fascinating to work with.
What do you dislike about the product?
I work with something deprecated called Studio, and I find it quite complicated to use because it doesn't have many features. This bothers me a lot. I hope to use newer technologies in the future, like Visual Studio Code, which would probably provide me with a better experience.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
InterSystems IRIS allows me to process data very quickly and with precision, handling large datasets effectively.

What do you like best about the product?
The things I liked the most are the performance, having the multidimensional engine is really fast to read and write even with high data volume and it gets really impressive when compared with relational databases. Also, I'd like to say that it is really multimodel, so you are able to access the same data with SQL, as an object, or using the Globals. For the last thing, the interoperability module is very mature and there's a lot of features ready-made.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are some things about IRIS that bother me a little bit, the small community, when you compare it with other technologies, is very niche. I asked about IRIS to a lot of people and they don't know what it is. Because of that, it is harder to solve very specific problems, sometimes you will have only the answer at old forums. The job market is very limited, it is hard to find someone who has experience with IRIS, and to hire someone and train them takes time. The licensing cost is not very accessible, so only big companies can afford it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The built-in interoperability engine has been very important to reduce development time on integration projects. I can use pre-built adapters and visual pipelines to route and transform messages. What took me weeks now takes days.

What do you like best about the product?
I admire the response speed, especially when dealing with huge volumes of data; it is perfect for integrations and offers excellent assistance and support. Yes, since I started, I’ve more than doubled my profits using InterSystems IRIS!!

Migrating from modern systems to learn ObjectScript is a bit of a hassle and requires more time.
