AlmaLinux OS is an open-source, community-driven Linux operating system that fills the gap left by the discontinuation of the CentOS Linux stable release. AlmaLinux OS is an Enterprise Linux distro, binary compatible with RHEL®, and guided and built by the community. As a standalone, completely free OS, AlmaLinux OS enjoys $1M in annual sponsorship from CloudLinux Inc. and support from more than 25 other sponsors. Ongoing development efforts are governed by the members of the community. The AlmaLinux OS Foundation is a 501(c)(6) non-profit created for the benefit of the AlmaLinux OS community.
Highlights
- All AlmaLinux OS AMI's include cloud-init support. The default cloud user is set up to be 'ec2-user'. After the machine is running, you will be able to log in as this user and run privileged commands with sudo.

AlmaLinux OS 9 (arm64) is free software, so the operating system itself carries no license charge. You pay only for the AWS EC2 compute you run it on, billed hourly per instance. The pricing dimensions are arm64 (Graviton-based) EC2 instance types, grouped into families for general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, high-memory, and HPC workloads. Within each family, hourly rates scale with instance size, from small options up to metal instances. You choose the family and size that fit your workload, then billing follows AWS hourly usage for that instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each rate covers one running arm64 (Graviton-based) EC2 instance of the chosen type, billed per hour. The AlmaLinux OS software itself is free, so the hourly figure reflects only AWS compute for that instance size. Larger sizes within a family carry higher hourly rates.
Software charges meter running instance-hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue the hourly charge. You may still pay separate AWS fees for attached storage or other resources, but the AlmaLinux OS software is free of charge in all cases.
The Marketplace listing bills only for EC2 hours; the OS is free and comes with community support such as forums, chat, and the wiki. Enterprise-grade support is offered separately by third-party providers and is not part of these hourly charges.
