You pay by the hour for this software, billed only while your instance runs. Each dimension maps to a specific Amazon EC2 instance type. Your rate depends on the instance family and size you choose, not a plan tier. General-purpose (m, t), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x, z, u), storage (d, i, h), and accelerated (g, p, inf, trn, dl, vt, f) families are all available. Larger sizes carry higher hourly rates because they provide more CPU and memory. You can pick the size that fits your workload and scale up or down as needs change.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit cover for each hourly rate?
One unit is one hour of a single running Amazon EC2 instance of the type you select. The rate bundles the software licence with that instance size. You are charged for each hour the instance runs, counted per instance, so two running instances bill two hourly charges.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when my instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running time only. A stopped or terminated instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS storage or other resources may still bill separately while the instance is stopped, but the software licence charges only while the instance runs.
If I move to a bigger instance size, when does the higher rate start?
The rate follows the instance type currently running. When you launch or resize to a larger instance, the new hourly rate applies from that point forward. There is no plan upgrade step. Stop the old size and start the new one to change what you pay per hour.

1. Getting Started with Windows on AWS

2. Logging in as Administrator
To log in to your AWS Windows instance as an Administrator, follow these steps:
Use the private key (.pem) file you generated when you created your EC2 instance to decrypt the Administrator password.
After obtaining the password, you can use it to log in to your Windows instance through Remote Desktop (RDP).
3. Launch SQL Server
To open SQL Server, go to the Start Menu and search for SQL Server, then select SQL Server 2017 Configuration Manager. SQL Server 2017 will be launched.
