This listing is free software, so you pay no license fee for the Data Node itself. Your cost comes only from the AWS EC2 instance you choose to run it on, billed per hour. You pick from two instance families. The t3 sizes (medium, large, xlarge, 2xlarge) offer general-purpose compute for smaller workloads. The c5n sizes (2xlarge, 4xlarge, 9xlarge, 18xlarge, and metal) provide more compute and network capacity for larger deployments. Pricing scales with the instance size you select, letting you match capacity to the volume of network data you retain and analyze.

Am I charged for the software when an EC2 instance running the Data Node is stopped?
The software carries no license fee, so no software charge accrues at any time. When an instance is stopped, you also stop the hourly EC2 compute charge. Underlying AWS storage attached to a stopped instance may still bill separately until you remove it.
What am I actually paying for if the software itself is free?
You pay only for the AWS EC2 instance that hosts the Data Node, metered per hour. The rate depends on the instance you pick. A t3 or c5n size determines your compute and network capacity. Larger instances cost more per hour but handle more network data.
What does a Data Node do, and why would I run more compute for it?
The Data Node retains longer-term, session-based network metadata that links to security events. Higher volumes of retained traffic and analysis need more compute and network throughput. The c5n family provides added network capacity for larger deployments, while t3 sizes suit smaller retention workloads.

Usage instructions
A Data Node instance provides a service menu for basic system configuration. Use of the service menu is not required except to set the default system password.
To access the Data Node instance's service menu via ssh:
log in as the 'bricata-user' using the SSH key associated with the instance.
i.e. run the command 'ssh -i my_aws_rsa_key bricata-user@instance_host_name'.
Substitute the file your private SSH key is stored in for my_aws_rsa_key and the hostname of the instance for instance_host_name.
You AWS instance does not ship with a default password, once logged in select "Change Password" to set your default password. This password will be required to manage the instance from the CMC
You may use this menu to perform the following additional actions if needed.
Manually configure the networking, reset and reboot the appliance.
*The password set function in the blue menu appears to not function, however it does, this will be addressed in a future release.
