You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you launch. The software price is the same across instances; your cost scales with the compute capacity you choose. Options fall into two groups. The t2, t3, and t3a families are burstable general-purpose instances, ranging from nano through 2xlarge. The m6a and m7a families are fixed-performance general-purpose instances, ranging from large through 8xlarge. Larger sizes add more vCPUs and memory at a higher hourly rate. You pick the size that matches your workload, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for each instance type listed?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the size you launch, billed per hour. The software comes pre-packaged as a machine image with all dependent components installed. Your hourly rate reflects that instance's vCPU and memory. You run one image per instance, and each instance meters independently.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when my instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume while the instance is stopped. Charges resume once you start the instance again.
Does the software cost differ between the burstable and fixed-performance instance families?
The software charge reflects the instance size you launch, not a separate license tier. Burstable families (t2, t3, t3a) provide baseline performance with bursting. Fixed-performance families (m6a, m7a) hold steady compute. Larger sizes carry higher hourly rates because they add vCPUs and memory. Pick the size matching your workload.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
