You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen AWS bare metal EC2 instance. Each dimension maps to one instance type, so pricing scales with the hardware you select. The options span several instance families: compute-optimized (c-series), memory-optimized (r-series and x-series), general purpose (m-series), storage-optimized (i-series), GPU-enabled (g-series), and high-frequency (z-series). Larger or higher-spec instances carry higher hourly rates. You are billed only for the hours the instance runs. Pick the instance size that fits the number of nested guest VMs you plan to host.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover — the physical server, or each nested guest VM?
One unit is a single AWS bare metal EC2 instance running the Hyper-V host software. You pay per instance-hour for the host. Nested guest VMs you create on that host are not metered separately. You can run as many guest VMs as the instance hardware supports without extra software charges.
Am I charged when the bare metal instance is stopped or powered off?
Hourly software charges apply while the instance runs. A stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Note that stopping an instance with local instance store volumes erases data on those volumes. Store guest VM disks on attached EBS volumes to keep them. EBS storage may still incur separate AWS fees.
What drives the difference in hourly rate between the instance options?
Each dimension maps to one instance type, so the hardware you pick drives the rate. Instance families differ by CPU count, memory, local storage, and GPU. Higher-spec instances that host more nested guest VMs carry higher hourly rates. You select one instance type per deployment and pay that instance's rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
