You pay by the hour for the software running on an Amazon EC2 instance. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, so your cost depends on the instance size you pick. Options span small, burstable types up to large compute, memory, storage, and GPU-focused instances. Larger or specialized instances carry higher hourly rates. There are no tiers or commitments here — pick the instance that fits your workload, and billing scales with the hours you run and the instance type chosen.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get when I run one of these hourly instances?
You get a security-hardened Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Desktop image with graphical desktop and RDP remote access, running on the EC2 instance type you select. The instance type sets the CPU, memory, storage, and GPU resources. You pay the vendor's software fee per hour on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges.
Am I charged the software fee when the instance is stopped or paused?
The software fee meters running hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay underlying AWS charges for attached storage while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Can I switch to a different instance type later, and how does that change my rate?
Each instance type is a separate hourly rate with no commitment. To change size, stop the instance and relaunch on another type, or launch a new one. Your bill then follows the new type's hourly rate for the hours you run it.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
