Use Case: Contractor Onboarding
Instead of shipping pre-configured laptops to new contractors, IT provisions a cloud desktop instance in minutes. The contractor connects via any standard RDP client from their existing device, accesses a fully configured Ubuntu desktop, and begins productive work immediately - all within a controlled, centrally managed environment.

Getting Started
- Launch the AMI on a supported EC2 instance (minimum recommended: t3.medium or higher with at least 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM for smooth GUI performance)
- Configure your Security Group to allow inbound TCP traffic on port 3389 (RDP) from your IP range
- Connect via RDP using any standard Remote Desktop client (Windows Remote Desktop, Remmina, Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac)
- Log in with the credentials provided in the usage instructions after launch
Expected time from instance launch to working desktop: approximately 2-3 minutes.

Requirements and Limitations
- Supported instance types: General purpose (t3, m5, m6i) and compute-optimized (c5, c6i) families. GPU instances (g4dn) recommended for graphics-intensive workloads
- Minimum instance size: t3.medium (2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM)
- Network: Security group must allow inbound TCP port 3389
- Storage: Root volume only - attach additional EBS volumes for persistent data storage
- Sessions: Single-user RDP session per instance
- Regions: Available in all standard AWS commercial regions

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen EC2 instance type. The many dimensions listed are not tiers or feature levels. Each one maps to a specific AWS instance size, from small general-purpose types to large compute, memory, storage, and GPU-optimized instances. Your rate scales with the instance you select, so heavier hardware costs more per hour. You pick the instance that fits your workload and pay only for the hours you run. There is no upfront commitment with this usage-based model.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You pay for each hour a chosen EC2 instance runs this pre-configured Ubuntu 22.04 desktop image. Billing meters wall-clock running time on that instance. The rate reflects the instance size you select. You are billed for the software layer on top of the underlying AWS compute charges.
The hourly software charge applies only while your instance is running. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes may still apply, but the software licence meters running hours only.
