    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Usage instructions

After the instance starts running, point your browser at https://<instance ip> and follow the instructions. First boot may take about 1 minute to reach the landing page.

On the first connection your browser will warn that the certificate is not trusted. This is expected because a fresh new AWS machine uses a self-signed certificate with no endorsement from public certificate authorities. To continue past the warning: - Chrome / Edge: click "Advanced", then "Proceed to ... (unsafe)" / "Continue to ...". - Firefox: click "Advanced...", then "Accept the Risk and Continue". - Safari: click "Show Details", then "visit this website" and confirm.

There are two sets of user/passwords:

    • RDP connection: You need this to establish RDP connection. The user is fixed as 'udesk' and the password is initially set as this instance's ID (e.g., i-0123456789abcdef0) shown in the EC2 console.
    • Ubuntu login: You need a valid Ubuntu user/password to log into the desktop. The initial user is ubuntu and the initial password is the same instance ID as above.

We recommend Chrome and Edge browsers. Safari and Firefox work as well, but need to use the "Shared clipboard" in the top toolbar for reliable copy'n'paste experience.
