You pay by the hour for Basic Debian 11 running on the AWS EC2 instance type you choose. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so your cost tracks the compute resources you select. Smaller shared-CPU types like t2 and t3 sizes suit lighter workloads. Larger general-purpose families like m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5ad, and m5dn scale up in CPU, memory, and storage, including bare-metal options. You pay only for the hours each instance runs. Choose a size to match your workload and add capacity by selecting a bigger instance type.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get for each hourly instance charge?
Each dimension maps to one running AWS EC2 instance of that size, preloaded with Debian 11. The charge covers the software licence and vendor support for the hours that instance runs. Larger instance types carry more CPU, memory, and storage. You choose the size that fits your workload.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges meter running hours only, so a fully stopped instance stops accruing the hourly software fee. A stopped instance may still incur underlying AWS storage costs for its attached volumes. To pause software charges, stop or terminate the instance from your AWS account.
How do I move to more capacity, and does my cost change automatically?
Capacity does not scale on its own. To add resources, you select a bigger instance type from the list and launch it. Your hourly rate then reflects that instance size. Running several instances bills each one separately by its own hourly rate.
