Overview
This CentOS 9 virtual machine image is fully preconfigured with Foundation Security's Level 2 hardening framework and deploys in minutes. Level 2 builds on our Level 1 secure baseline by adding additional and more stringent security measures intended for high-security and highly regulated workloads.
This enhanced profile includes stricter authentication policies, advanced logging and auditing, stronger access control rules, and additional system lockdown configurations to further reduce the attack surface. Foundation Level 2 is intended for environments where security requirements exceed standard enterprise baselines - such as workloads involving sensitive data, regulated industries, or mission-critical systems where risk tolerance is extremely low.
By applying these advanced controls prior to launch, this image eliminates the extensive engineering effort typically required to achieve such a hardened state on a baseline operating system. It reduces the risk of misconfiguration, enforces stricter security boundaries, and ensures a consistent, repeatable high-security posture from day one.

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for this hardened CentOS 9 image running on ARM-based (Graviton) instances. Pricing is not tiered. Instead, each rate maps to a specific AWS EC2 instance type you choose to run. Your cost scales with two factors: the instance family you pick and the size within that family. General-purpose (m, t, a), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x), and storage/IO-optimized (i, is, im, hpc, g) families are all available. Larger sizes and metal options carry higher hourly rates. You are billed only for hours the instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hourly rate covers one running EC2 instance of the type you select, with the hardened CentOS 9 ARM image installed. You pay per instance-hour for that specific size. Running two instances of the same type bills two hourly rates. The rate reflects the instance family and size you choose.
Software charges accrue per hour only while an instance runs. Stopped or powered-off instances do not accrue the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage or other AWS resource fees may still apply separately, but the software license meters running hours only.
Two factors set your hourly rate: the instance family and the size within it. Compute-optimized, memory-optimized, general-purpose, and storage/IO-optimized families each carry different rates. Larger sizes and bare-metal options cost more per hour. Your total bill equals the chosen rate multiplied by running hours.

Usage instructions
Quick Start
Launch your CentOS 9 instance and connect using SSH on port 22. The default username is centos.
Example: ssh -i /path/to/your-key.pem centos@<public-ip-address>

If you connect over SSH, configure your security group to allow access only from your trusted IP address.
This image has been fully hardened with Foundation Level 2 security controls applied and validated before release. No additional hardening steps are required after launch.
Once connected, you can immediately begin installing and running your applications on a secure, advanced-hardened baseline.
